For Serial Movers Athena and Victor Calderone, the Eighth Time's The
no sleep till brooklyn For serial movers Athena and Victor Calderone, the eighth time’s the charm— a classical townhouse in Cobble Hill has become the stylish couple’s forever home TEXT BY JANE KELTNER DE VALLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIEVES ANDERSON STYLED BY COLIN KING SUNLIGHT STREAMS INTO THE KITCHEN AT ATHENA AND VICTOR CALDERONE’S TOWNHOUSE. ARCHDIGEST.COM 129 s the saying goes, it’s the journey, not the destination. But for Athena Calderone, the domestic goddess behind lifestyle site EyeSwoon, and husband Victor, music producer and techno DJ, their journey brought them to a superb destination: a 25-foot-wide Greek Revival townhouse in historic Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. ARewind to 1996 and The Limelight, New York’s legendary nightclub, housed in a Gothic-style deconsecrated church, where Victor first laid eyes on Athena, then a young bartender. A basement apartment in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, set the stage for the next phase of courtship, quarters so cozy they shared a twin Murphy bed. “That’s love,” Athena jokes. By 1998 the two were engaged and exploring Dumbo, then an undeveloped neighborhood with not so much as a grocery store. “People thought we were crazy,” she says. Victor chimes in with a chuckle: “Our families were like, ‘You can go to Staten Island and get a house with property!’ ” They borrowed the money to purchase a loft, and so began the cycle of renovating and selling their homes—though, Athena insists, “we weren’t flippers. -
The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there. -

Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- Lecture for C-Span
Fordham University DigitalResearch@Fordham Occasional Essays Bronx African American History Project 10-28-2019 Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- Lecture for C-Span Mark Naison Follow this and additional works at: https://fordham.bepress.com/baahp_essays Part of the African American Studies Commons, American Popular Culture Commons, Cultural History Commons, and the Ethnomusicology Commons Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- My Lecture for C-Span What I am about to describe to you is one of the most improbable and inspiring stories you will ever hear. It is about how young people in a section of New York widely regarded as a site of unspeakable violence and tragedy created an art form that would sweep the world. It is a story filled with ironies, unexplored connections and lessons for today. And I am proud to share it not only with my wonderful Rock and Roll to Hip Hop class but with C-Span’s global audience through its lectures in American history series. Before going into the substance of my lecture, which explores some features of Bronx history which many people might not be familiar with, I want to explain what definition of Hip Hop that I will be using in this talk. Some people think of Hip Hop exclusively as “rap music,” an art form taken to it’s highest form by people like Tupac Shakur, Missy Elliot, JZ, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Wu Tang Clan and other masters of that verbal and musical art, but I am thinking of it as a multilayered arts movement of which rapping is only one component. -

EDGE New York City :: Gay New York City :: Nightlife :: Gay Bars, Gay Clubs, Lesbian Bars, Lesbian ... Page 1 of 2 Nightlife Features MattUnleashed on Nightlife :: Bananarama or Goldfrapp? by Matt Kalkhoff EDGE Nightlife Contributor Thursday May 18, 2006 On Tuesday night, I had to pick between an in-store CD signing at the Columbus Circle Borders where Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward were celebrating the U.S. release of their new album, "Drama" (which is excellent, by the way) or an in-studio mini-concert by Goldfrapp in Tribeca that was to be broadcast live on Seattle’s KEXP radio station and website. As much as I love Bananarama (yes, they’re still recording, but it was just an appearance, no Bananarama signed CDs at Columbus Circle Borders performance), I think I Tuesday night. made the right decision by going with that other English dame. After a lovely little happy hour excursion (see below), we made our way over to Gigantic Studios at Franklin and Broadway to catch Goldfrapp perform live. Shortly after 8:00 about 20 of us were ushered up to the 4th floor and into a very tiny room where we stood about 8 feet from Alison & Co., separated only by a large sound-proof window. An interview with a KEXP personality split the four-song set, which included "Number 1," "Ooh La La" and two other selections from the "Supernature" CD. I was hoping to hear some older hits like "Strict Machine" as well, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (I’m sure they performed that one and others at their Irving Plaza concert the previous night, though.) Granted, there wasn’t a whole lot she could do in that cramped, carpeted space with all the equipment and several band members surrounding her, but the diminutive diva looked and sounded terrific, sporting a simple black number, retro-fab blond locks and some serious shades that were either shielding her from the blinding studio lights or covering up evidence of whatever post-concert partying might have gone on the night before. -

Taking the Stage by Lauren Biron AT MIDNIGHT, armed with a ruler and a pencil, Bentley Chang kneels in his bedroom under a poster of John Lennon. Next to a large, black bass drum that dominates the floor, he lays out a thick sheet of drawing paper and begins to sketch the letter “zhe” of the Cyrillic alphabet; it looks like a K reflected along its vertical axis. In the muggy, musky room, his skin sticks to his wifebeater and basketball shorts as he outlines his design. Once finished, he cuts out the stencil with a razor and attaches the altered K to the drum with masking tape. He thought of using the letter “zhe” as a “K” when he was driving down the freeway. It came to him as randomly as the band name had come to their DJ, Kevin Agorrilla. The group had suggested names for weeks at a time: Circles with Dots, Smegmatron, Audial Entropy, Forte. Then one day at practice, Kevin suggested Kersey, named after the masculine Charles Bronson character from Death Wish 3. Only four of the six band members had seen the movie, but all agreed that Charles Bronson was so badass he could kill Chuck Norris in a fight, and that was good enough. The name provided no stigma, no definition of what they should sound like. The rhythm and funk and punk could take over. When Bentley accidentally misspelled the band name, Kearsey was born. Now, as the music of Circa Survive plays, Bentley mixes red and crimson acrylic paint and retrieves a flat brush. -
