PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: THE BLACK PRINCESS SPRINTING 3-YEAR-OLDS By Andrew Caulfield STEP OUT IN PAVILION I don=t know how much Sheikh Mohammed paid for Park Appeal after this filly completed her unbeaten juvenile campaign but one thing=s for sure--he has rarely made a better investment. Not that the purchase of this daughter of Ahonoora yielded any immediate dividends. The GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies, two weeks after her change of ownership, had been mentioned as a target by trainer Jim Bolger, but a virus put an end to that ambitious plan. Park Appeal=s first appearance in Sheikh Mohammed=s colours came in the 1985 G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches. Despite being up against Alydar=s Best, who had defeated the colts in the G1 Gran Criterium, the Irish challenger started favourite on the strength of decisive victories in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and the G1 Cheveley Park S. (which she took by an impressive four lengths). Park Appeal could finish only seventh at Longchamp and she never raced again in Europe. The first to launch Balidaress to stardom was Desirable, her third foal. This daughter of Lord Gayle also won the G1 Cheveley Park S. and she sold for 1,000,000gns as a 3-year-old in 1984, having finished third in the G1 1000 Guineas. Park Appeal also had a group-winning brother in Nashamaa and a Classic-winning half-sister in Alydaress (G1 Irish Oaks). The Balidaress female line has now produced more than 20 group winners, with Park Appeal=s contribution standing at six. Her Sadler=s Wells filly Arvola visited Warning to produce Diktat, Europe=s champion older sprinter of 1999. Park Appeal=s first foal, the Nureyev filly Pastorale, also did well. Pastorale made a winning debut at Newmarket as a 3-year-old, creating such a favourable impression that she started at 6-1 for the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Although she disappointed at The Curragh, Pastorale has made full amends by becoming the dam of three group winners, headed by Iffraaj, a triple Group 2 winner over seven furlongs, and the gelding Farraaj, who was rated as high as 125 by Timeform. The reason for this lengthy summary of the exploits of Park Appeal and her family is that Sunday=s G3 Prix Allez France was won in good style by The Black Princess. This filly is inbred 3 x 3 to Park Appeal, as she is by Iffraaj out of a daughter of Cape Cross.

Iffraaj first drew attention to himself by siring 38 juvenile winners in his first crop, including the unbeaten Group 1 winner Wootton Bassett, while Cape Cross became champion sire of 2-year-olds with his first crop. Iffraaj is now 16 years old and is making his mark in several areas. Wootton Bassett, of course, is the sire of Almanzor, the top-ranked European horse of 2016, and Iffraaj=s broodmare daughters are also off the mark at Group 1 level, thanks to this The Black Princess & her happy connections | Scoop Dyga year=s New Zealand 2-year-old Melody Belle. Cape Cross started his career at only IR,8,000 at Danehill mares. Danehill=s daughters also produced his smart Kildangan Stud and did so well that his fee peaked at i50,000. Northern Hemisphere performers Chriselliam, Nathra and Iffraaj also began his stallion career at Kildangan, starting at Latharnach. These five black-type winners come from the first i12,000. Having pointed out the Park Appeal inbreeding in The Black Princess=s pedigree, I should add that there are other possible explanations for the filly=s talent. She comes from a first-rate family and her 2-year-old half-sister, the Dark Angel filly Gabrielle, is in training with Andre Fabre. Their dam Larceny BARNEY ROY WORKS FOR GUINEAS managed only one start but this daughter of Cape Cross has the Godolphin=s Barney Roy (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) put in his distinction of being closely related to Lawman, winner of the G1 final piece of work on Tuesday ahead of Saturday=s G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey-Club and G1 Prix Jean Prat. Lawman was sired by 2000 Guineas. The G3 Greenham S. winner worked in company Invincible Spirit, who shares the same sire, Green Desert, as with his Richard Hannon stablemate Larchmont Lad (Ire) Cape Cross. (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who will also line up at Newmarket. "I gave them both a little blow out this morning and I couldn't have been happier with them," Hannon said. ABarney Roy is a horse we have been very excited about for a long time and he confirmed our views in impressive style when taking the Greenham. He still ran a bit green that day and I believe the step up in trip and the extra experience will stand him in good stead. Cheveley Park Stud=s G3 Tattersalls S. winner Larchmont Lad was fifth in his reappearance in the G3 Craven S. on Apr. 20. "Larchmont Lad, my other runner who is now owned by Cheveley Park Stud, worked very nicely today and has definitely come on from his first run at Newmarket," Hannon added. "He was on the wrong side of the track that day and got tired over the last furlong. He seems to be in much better order and I expect a bolder sighting of him on the big day." Iffraaj | Darley

The Black Princess=s second dam, the Gulch mare Laramie, is a member of that very select number of mares with more than one Classic winner to their credit. Mated to Ahonoora=s son Inchinor, Laramie produced the 2004 G1 Prix de Diane winner and she also produced the speedy Group 3 winner Satri to Mujadil. Laramie showed only a little ability but comes from an excellent female line. The Black Princess=s third dam, the Shirley Heights mare Light The Lights, ranked among France=s best staying fillies in 1988, when she won the G2 Prix de Pomone before running well in the G1 Prix Vermeille and the Arc. The fourth dam, that accomplished broodmare Lighted Glory, was also a Group 1 performer in France, as well as being a half-sister to the very smart stayers King Luthier and Torus. This female line traces to the 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play, whose descendants have won all five British Classics. Barney Roy winning the Greenham S. | Racing Post

Trainer Karl Burke said the bay could go for a racecourse gallop at Redcar on Thursday. "She's in great form and I'm thinking of taking her for a day out after racing at Redcar on Thursday,@ the trainer said. AI think that will do her good. At the moment I'm favouring going to Haydock for the Temple with her, but it all depends if there's 'soft' in the going description. Saying that, if it came up slow at York we might go there."

Dawn Wigan inherited West Blagdon from her father, Charles Gordon, in 1959 and ran it with her husband Dare Wigan, who died in 1993. Worldwide News cont. RECORD-SETTING FILLY GRADUATES AT VAAL by Alan Carasso Best Kept Secret (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}), who established a new record price for a filly sold in South Africa at the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, was off the mark at third asking Tuesday at the Vaal, landing a maiden juvenile plate over 1200m. Trained by Mike de Kock for the partnership of Mrs. John Magnier, Mrs. Diane Nagle, Maine Chance Farms and Mayfair Speculators, Best Kept Secret was in front entering the final quarter-mile for jockey Callan Murray, went clear inside the furlong and was kept to her task late to best the well-backed Let It Flow (SAf) (Judpot) by a diminishing half-length as the 29-20 joint favorite. Bred by the BBP Syndicate, the full-sister to Equus Award- winning juvenile filly and treble Grade 1 winner All Is Secret (SAf) and G1SW The Secret Is Out (SAf) was consigned to the Premier Sale by Klawervlei Stud as agent and was hammered down to Tina Rau Bloodstock and Coolmore=s M.V. Magnier for R5.2 million (,223,004/i291,401). That result came not long after Mayfair and Coolmore joined forces to acquire the sale=s top lot, a colt by Silvano (Ger)--National Banker (SAf) (Fort Wood) for a record-setting R6 million. Now named Silver Coin and under the care of Joey Ramsden, the Drakenstein Stud-bred bay broke his maiden at first asking as the 5-4 favorite at Kenilworth Apr. 4.

TAPWRIT A 2015 >BEST SELLER= FOR RIGGIO PARADISE WOODS by Steve Sherack FAVORED IN OAKS LOUISVILLE, KY - Books aren't the only thing that Len Riggio has been making headlines selling these days. The Barnes & Noble founder has also accumulated quite the collection of broodmares over the past decade or so and will have his name listed in the program as a breeder at Saturday=s GI Kentucky Derby via GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby hero Tapwrit (Tapit). AI look at it as a privilege to be able to have the means to breed horses that can compete at this level,@ said Riggio, who built his aforementioned Fortune 500 company from just a single college bookstore back in 1965. "For the size of our operation, if we get one Grade I or one very good one a year, we're doing great.@ Cont. p3

Riding a five-race winning skein is Miss Sky Warrior (First Samurai), the Kelly Breen-trainee who was made the 9-2 second selection and will break from the 10-post. The Kentucky Oaks is dominated by >TDN Rising Star= Paradise Woods, impressive winner of the GI Santa Anita Oaks by nearly 12 lengths and one of three Grade I-winning fillies from the first crop by Lane=s End=s Union Rags; and Farrell, by a top filly sire in Malibu Moon, winner of her last four, including a sweep of the three filly races at Fair Grounds, among them convincing wins in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. and GII Fair Grounds Oaks. This year=s Kentucky Derby, as has been widely trailed, is a different kettle of fish, with a win by one of maybe 15 of the 20 probable starters within the realms of possibility (the last time the landscape looked like this, in 2009, I had 14 horses live in a Pick 3 and Mine That Bird won at 51-1, leaving a certain Pioneerof the Nile toiling in the slop). But wait: every year one or two horses seem to bloom at Classic Empire | Coady Photography Churchill Downs and those horses are usually a danger to all.

“The OBS April Sale is the Keeneland September of 2-year-old sales, and the results were very encouraging, with the gross up 17% to $61.1-million, and the average up 14%, to $90,245. The clearance rate from the catalogue edged up almost 2%, to 56.1%, though almost a third (391, or 32.4%) of those originally catalogued were withdrawn. In 2014 the gross reached just under $57-million, the percentage withdrawn was 22%, and the percentage sold from the catalogue was 63.8%, which is 7.5% higher than this year. Overall, the North American 2-year-old sales so far are up over $20-million (15%) in gross and 12% in average compared to 2016, though when we go back farther, the withdrawal rate is up by 10 percentage points since 2013, and the percentage sold from the catalogues is down 8.5%.
