During the seven months passed by until now since the last issue of the Review, significant developments have taken place on the Armenian Question and Turkey-Armenia relations. “Facts and Comments” classifies these according to their subjects, provides rather detailed information and makes some comments. Prof. Dr. Kemal Ç‹ÇEK’s article entitled “Relocation of the Armenians in 1915: A Reassesment” addresses the key issues of the Armenian relocation such as distortion of the UN Convention of 1948, relocation as a security measure, limits of the Armenian transfers, the legend of the “death march”, and to what extent the Ottoman Government is responsible etc. Alfred de Zayas, a retired UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, has EDITORIAL NOTE written a book entitled “The Genocide Against the Armenian 1915-1923 and the Relevance of the 1948 Genocide Convention” published by the Armenian Haigazian University in Beirut. Retired Ambassador Pulat TACAR, in his article “An Invitation to Truth, Transparency and Accountability: Toward “Responsible Dialogue” makes a detailed analyses of the book and refutes some very controversial views of de Zayas. Assist. Prof. Deniz ALTINBAfi, in her “Discussing The Probability Of Turkish-Armenian Integration By Making Comparison To The European Case” article, after explaining definition, meaning, stages of Integration and terms like, intergovernmentalism, supranationalism federalism, confederalism, etc. studies the reasons, type, obstacle of a future Turkish-Armenian Integration and make comparisons with the European Integration process. Armenians’ activities in Hungary against the Ottoman Empire are almost unknown. However Dr Atilla von Orbòk, in a booklet he published in 1916, Review of Armenian Studies 5 No. 22, 2010 tried to explain these activities and drew the attention of the Hungarian public opinion, who, for religious reasons, could support Armenian views. Yücel NAMAL, in his article “A Booklet Regarding the Armenian Question in Hungary” gives detailed information about von Orbòk and his booklet. In the “Book Review” section of this issue, Halit GÜLfiEN analyzes some very interesting points of the last book of fiükrü Server Aya: “The Genocide of Truth Continues, But Facts Tell the Real Story”. Cohen Professor of international relations at Lehigh University. The term is considered to be Eurocentric and used as a synonym for Near East, in opposition to Far East. The corresponding adjective is Middle-Eastern and the derived noun is Middle-Easterner. The largest ethnic group in the middle east are Arabs,[2] with Turks, Turkomans, Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Copts, Jews, Maronites, Assyro-Chaldeans, Circassians, Armenians, Druze and numerous other ethnic groups forming other significant populations. The history of the Middle East dates back to ancient times, and throughout its history, the Middle East has been a major center of world affairs. When discussing ancient history, however, the term Near East is more commonly used. The Middle East is also the historical origin of major religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as well as the less common Baha'i faith, Mandaeism, Druze faith and others. The Middle East generally has an arid and hot climate, with several major rivers providing for irrigation to support agriculture in limited areas, especially in Mesopotamia and the rest of the Fertile Crescent. Many countries located around the Persian Gulf have large quantities of crude oil, which has resulted in much wealth particularly for nations in the Arabian peninsula.

    A. D. Sakharov Armenian Human Rights Foundation Monitoring Report On Working Conditions in First Instance Courts in Shirak, Gegharkunik, and Syunik Marzes (Regions) Studies were conducted and this Report was elaborated due to the generous financial and technical assistance of the OSCE Office in Yerevan and the Polish Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights Preface The mission of the A. D. Sakharov Armenian Human Rights Foundation is to support the establishment of a civil society in Armenia, to enhance legal awareness of the public, and to protect rights and freedoms of humans and citizens. The organization has three regional branches in Shirak (City of Gyumri), Gegharkunik (City of Gavar), and Syunik (City of Goris). In 2001, representatives of the three branches attended a series of “Monitoring and Human Rights” seminars held in Lusakert by the OSCE Office in Yerevan and the Polish Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights; as a practical follow-up to the seminars, and within the framework of the ongoing judicial reform, they have carried out a “Monitoring of Working Conditions in First Instance Courts” project in the Shirak, Gegharkunik, and Syunik regions of Armenia. The goal of the project was to explore the current conditions in which courts in the regions operate, because the working conditions and infrastructure of the third branch of government are crucial in terms of its stance, its improved role and authority, and guaranteeing the right of citizens to a fair and public trial within a reasonable time, as required under the existing laws. The concept of the judicial reform in the Republic of Armenia was formed under the Constitution adopted in 1995.

The coat of arms combines new and old symbols. The eagle and lion are ancient Armenian symbols dating from the first Armenian kingdoms that existed prior to Christ. The current coat of arms was adopted on April 19, 1992 by the Armenian Supreme Council decision. On June 15, 2006, the law on the state coat of arms of Armenia was passed by the Armenian Parliament. In the center is a depiction of Mount Ararat with Noah's Ark sitting atop it. According to tradition, the ark is said to have finally rested on the mountain after the great flood. Ararat is considered the national symbol of Armenia and thus is of principle importance to the coat of arms. Surrounding Mount Ararat are symbols of old Armenian dynasties. In the lower left portion of the shield, there are two eagles looking at each other, symbolizing the length of the Armenian territory during the reign of the Artaxiad Dynasty that ruled in the 1st century BC.

    Volume 1, Issue 5 Fall 2016 The Fearless Pursuit to Activism: AYF Senior Seminar 2016 By Dickran Khodanian FRANKLIN, Mass. «Միացե՛ք Հայեր, Արցախն է մեզ կանչում»/ “Miyatsek Hayer, Artsakh-neh mez ganchoom”/ Come together Armenians, Artsakh is calling us. The Armenian Youth Federation held its annual senior seminar on the weekend of September 30-October 2 with over 80 attendees at Camp Haiastan. Due to the senior seminar last year and given the circumstances of Artsakh, the central theme of the weekend was based around Artsakh. After being present at the lectures and witnessing the dialogue discussed, the theme of the weekend could not have been more appropriate. Following the Four Day War that took the lives of over a hundred soldiers, the entire global community of Armenians were united in support of Artsakh and were ready to be of any type of assistance to their brothers and sisters in the homeland. This senior seminar became an opportunity for the AYF to inform and educate its membership on the current issues Artsakh and Armenia face in order to stimulate the conversation of how we as young Armenian diasporans could be of service to our homeland. The seminar began with a lecture by a great mentor and Editor of Asbarez News Ara Khachatourian on the historical perspective of Artsakh as well as its relevance to our various fights for justice. Khachatourian began his lecture by mentioning the current situation in Syria and Turkish PM,Garo Paylan’s visit to Los Angeles in the previous week. He informed us on how in the last week, there were 5 deaths in the Armenian community of Syria and that the current situation due to the Syrian Civil War has only been escalating and effecting the Armenian community severely.

Therefore, we annually grant “Freedom of Expression and Thought Award” since 1995. Through this award, we aim to support writers and publishers, who fight for freedom of expression and thought; to call public attention to this matter; to make efforts of independent bookstores visible, who encounter economic and political difficulties, but conti- nue their existence giving a persistent struggle. At our award ceremony, our report on freedom of publishing in Turkey is released. It covers incidents of censorship, investigations, banning decisions, lawsuits and convictions targeting publications and a free publishing environment, as well as the de facto pressure on it in the given period. This year’s Freedom of Expression and Thought Award is granted to journalist and writer Hasan Cemal, Alfa Publishing Group, and Kırşehir Gül bookstore for their ongoing struggle against political and economic challenges.
