ChaucerÕs Parlement of Foules as a Valentine Fable The Subversive Poetics of Feminine Desire Jean E. Jost In Parentheses: Papers in Medieval Studies 1999 53 haucer’s initiation of St. Valentine’s Day as a celebration for love-birds of all species began a remarkable tradition of wide social and cultural impact still blooming today in florists’ and Hallmark shops around the world. Smitten medieval Courts eagerly implemented Chaucer’s literary suggestions, instituting programs to further the already well-known practice and policy of courtly love. By the time of his death, these practices were becoming institutionalized not only in England but in France and elsewhere as well. As Derek S. Brewer points out, A whole elaborate institution, the Cour Amoreuse was founded in the French Court in honour of women; its chief aim was the presentation of love poems to ladies in a kind of competition, with a prize for the best poem. The Cour Amoreuse first met in Paris on St. Valentine’s Day 1400. In theory there were over six hundred members… mostly great lords of the realm… under the King’s patronage. It was ruled by a “Prince of Love”, who was a professional poet…. On St. Valentine’s Day 1400, after mass, the chief ministers… met in “joyous recreation and conversation about love.” Love-poems were presented before ladies, who judged them, and awarded a golden crown and chaplet for the best poem.1 54 Subversive Poetics This and other institutions in France and England—the rival orders of the Flower and the Leaf, for example—testify to the abiding interest in fine amour in poetry and courtly society. -

5 Books IV and V: Exchange and Inconstancy Following the consummation scene and close of Book III, the figure of Criseyde spirals downward to her fate as the exemplar of inconstancy and fickleness as she has come to be known. In Book IV the affair of Troilus and Criseyde moves beyond the private space and into the realm of public politics. Pandarus’ “zone of private power,” as Sarah Stanbury calls it, is shattered, and his control is severed. So, too, we witness the narrator’s own unraveling under the weight of impending scenes which he seemingly wishes not to render. But Criseyde continues to be the hinge on which the story pivots, and it is on her actions, as always, the outcome seemingly depends. Elizabeth Archibald (“Declarations of ‘Entente’ in Troilus and Criseyde”) continues her study of ‘entente’ in Book IV, in which she argues “every use of the word is connected to Criseyde’s intentions and decisions” (203). In fact, she states, “Criseyde’s ‘entente’ is the focus of Book IV, and by the end of the book the narrator gives us clear indications that we are to take Criseyde’s intentions as ephemeral and untrustworthy” (205). Troilus determines to accept Criseyde’s desires in her trade to the Greeks: For which he gan deliberen, for the beste, That though the lordes wolde that she wente, He wolde lat hem graunte what hem leste, And telle his lady first what that they mente; And whan that she hadde seyd hym hire entente, Therafter wolde he werken also blyve, 70 Theigh al the world ayeyn it wolde stryve. -

Letters before letters Ewen Bowie The genre of ‘epistle’/’letter’, including its species ‘love letter’, was developed and depended upon a world that had access to writing. Was the notion of communication of ideas to a remote audience therefore foreign to a pre-literate Greek society? Several poems surviving from the archaic period, when Greek culture was moving from an oral to an oral-cum-literate stage, show that it was not. Just as a king or community might arrange for a messenger to memorise a message and deliver it to a chosen recipient, so too a poet could have a friend or associate memorise a poem or, in most cases, a song, and sing that to an audience remote from the poet himself or herself. Our clearest case is Alcaeus fr. 428, where we have two testimonia, Herodotus 5.94-5 and Strabo 13.1.38 (600), who present complementary data, and surely both had access to and drew on Alcaeus’ poem, most of which is lost to us. It seems that the poem was addressed to Melanippus (also the addressee of the meta-sympotic fr. 38A), and asked him to act as a herald (kēryx) to carry to Mytilene the news of Alcaeus’ loss of his armour to the Athenians. Not, therefore, a remote immediate addressee: but Alcaeus envisages two audiences, Melanippus, and doubtless other hetairoi, in the hic et nunc in the Troad, and then other, remote Mytileneans back home. That Alcaeus presented himself giving instructions to Melanippus underlines the expectation that this song will be sung in Mytilene, but of course the move is one Alcaeus can make because he knows that sympotic songs of all sorts travel from one part of the Greek world to another, carried by singing symposiasts who learn a song that they like, whether for its tune, its words or its message, and then sing it at another symposium. -

Chivalry and Courtly Love: Ideal but Unreal
Chivalry and Courtly Love: Ideal but Unreal Chivalry was a system of ideals and social codes governing the behavior of knights and gentlewomen. Among its precepts were adhering to one’s oath of loyalty to the overlord and observing certain rules of warfare, such as never attacking an unarmed opponent. In addition, adoring a particular lady (not necessarily one’s wife) was seen as a means of achieving self- improvement. The idea that revering and acting in the name of a lady would make a knight braver and better was central to one aspect of chivalry, courtly love. Courtly love was, in its ideal form, nonsexual. A knight might wear his lady’s colors in battle, he might glorify her in words and be inspired by her, but the lady always remained pure and out of reach. She was “set above” her admirer, just as the feudal lord was set above his vassel. Since such a concept flew in the face of human nature, it provided built-in drama for poets and storytellers, as the King Arthur sagas illustrate. When Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, for example, cross the line between courtly and physical love, the whole social system represented by Arthur’s Round Table collapses. Camelot crumbles. Chivalry brought about an idealized attitude toward women, but it did little to improve their actual position. A woman’s perceived value remained tied to the value of the lands she brought to a marriage. But chivalry did give rise to a new form of literature, the romance (see Elements of Literature for “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” in Collection 2).
