  • REPRESENTATIONS of QUEEN ELIZABETH I in EDMUND SPENSER's PASTORAL POETRY Im
1-I • 1 II REPRESENTATIONS OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I IN EDMUND SPENSER'S PASTORAL POETRY Im FRANK IAN SWANNACK BA(Hons). MA BY RESEARCH AT UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL LANCASHIRE. Submitted on September 2005. Viva October, 2005. ABSTRACT This thesis will analyse Edmund Spenser's pastoral poems, The Shepherd's Calendar (1579) and Co/in Clout's Come Home Againe (1595) to uncover allegorical representations of Queen Elizabeth I. The psychoanalytical theories of Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva will be appropriated to construct a methodological model termed the 'Lacanian Pastoral'. This model will be used to examine Spenser's poetic unconscious that maps identity, represented by Spenser's poetic persona of Cohn Clout, on to a political landscape. Clout is constructed from Spenser's marginalised position outside the Elizabethan court, as a young poet in The Shepherd's Calendar and literary exile in Ireland in Co/in Clout's Come Home Againe. This creates a dichotomy between Spenser and Elizabeth, which is caused by Spenser's twin anxieties over Elizabeth's unmarried and childless state. These anxieties reflect Spenser's desire for patronage, and his fear of a counter-reformation threat posed by Catholicism. They create a poetic identity in which Elizabeth is unconsciously desired as the exotic Other, through a pastoral that maps the Elizabethan court. Spenser constructs this political landscape from a reinterpretation of his Virgihian and Petrarchan pastoral influences. Both these classical poets use allegory to create political tension in their pastorals that, as this thesis will argue, Spenser exacerbates to construct a dystopic pastoral. The dystopic pastoral reflects Spenser's inner turmoil surrounding his own future, and that of Protestantism in England.

  • The Theme of Alienation in the Major Novels by Ahinad Elsayyad Ahxaad
The Theme of Alienation in the Major Novels of Thomas Hardy by Ahinad Elsayyad Ahxaad Abuzeid Thesis Submitted to the Department of English Literature in the University of Glasgow For the Degree of Ph.D. University of Glasgow September 1987 I Acknowledgements It would be impossible to acknowledge, or even perhaps to know, all the intellectual debts one has incurred over the years and in the course of writing this study. I would particularly wish to acknowledge my general indebtedness to the outstanding studies by Jean Brooks, John Holloway, Irving Howe, Hillis Miller and Michael Millgate. But there are three critics whose influence I am particularly conscious of, Philip Drew's chapter in The Meaning of Freedom, Robert Grant's lectures on Hardy and Ian Gregor's The Great Web. These have formed immeasurably my thinking about Hardy and contributed much to whatever value this study may have. I must record my incalculable debts to Dr Robert A.D. Grant, my supervisor, for his advice and encouragement, and for his corrections of numerous errors that my laboriously learnt English could not altogether avoid. I must also record my deep respect and gratitude to Professor Philip Drew who kindly agreed to supervise me temporarily during Dr Grant's sabbatical year. He gave me much of his time, scholarship and expertise. I am happy to take this opportunity to express my thanks to Professor Andrew Hook, Head of the Department of English Literature, for his kindness, help and caring attitude and Mr Robert Cummings for his fine course on sources of research.

  • Fisheries Centre Report 1993-2000
19931993 -- 20002000 ReportReport TheThe FFisheriesisheries CentrCentree UnivUniversityersity ofof BritishBritish ColumbiaColumbia Forewords want to congratulate all the members of the Fisheries Centre whose Iachievements are recorded in this excellent report. Over a very short time period, the Centre has contributed many exciting new initiatives in the areas of sustainable development and the planned growth of our fisheries. British Columbia is a vast treas- ure-house of natural resources, but we must exercise responsible stewardship over the complex ecosystems that surround us if we hope to preserve that treasure for future generations. The Fisheries Centre brings together government agencies, First Nations, and the University in a vital collaboration, offering an excellent model of how to ad- dress an issue of both regional and global importance through multidisciplinary research and teaching. Many problems lie ahead, but this report gives us reason to be optimistic about our ability to find solutions. DR MARTHA PIPER PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA am delighted that, in its first eight years, the Fisheries Centre is successfully Ifulfilling its mandate as one of 26 interdisciplinary research units within the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The output reviewed in this report not only underlines the Centres influential global role in its field, but also reflects the remarkable drive and enthusiasm of its members. An internal report in 1996 identified poor accommodation as one of the main weaknesses and so we are pleased to see reported here the success in attracting Canada Foundation for Innovation funding that will provide a new home for Fisheries Centre members. The Faculty of Graduate Studies is proud to provide con- tinuing support for the Fisheries Centre in its activities.

SMOOTH PLAINS FORMATION ON MERCURY Walter S. Kiefer and Bruce C. Murray, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125 Smooth plains are sparsely cratered regions which cover about 15% of the part of Mercury imaged by Mariner 10. Based primarily on their areal distribution, inferred volume, and stratigraphic relationships with Caloris basin ejecta, a volcanic origin was suggested by the Mariner 10 Imaging Team 12Definitive volcanic features have not been observed, however, leading Wilhelms to suggest that the smooth plains are dominantly ballistically emplaced impact ejecta deposits, analogous to the lunar Cayley Plains (3). This lingering uncertainty prompted us to reexamine Mariner 10 imagery of several smooth plains units in order to better constrain the history and mode of formation of Mercury's smooth plains. Borealis Planitia is a smooth plains unit which completely surrounds the basin Goethe, which is also covered by smooth plains. Borealis Planitia is covered by a number of low ridges, some of which extend to Goethe's rim. These ridges clearly formed after the Goethe impact and apparently once extended onto Goethe's floor. Because these ridges are no longer visible inside Goethe. Goethe's smooth plains must have buried the ridges and therefore must be younger than the ridges. Since the Borealis Planitia smooth plains predate the ridges and the Goethe smooth plains postdate the ridges, at least two separate episodes of smooth plains emplacement must have occurred in this region. The inferred two stage emplacement history, with the later stage restricted to the interior of the Goethe basin, is inconsistent with a ballistic origin but is consistent with a volcanic origin.
