    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

The present chapter explains the imperatives followed by physical features. I.1 THE SIZE OF LEBANON AND ITS GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION The first unavoidable feature or reality of Lebanon is its small surface area. With less than 11000 km2, it is the second smallest country in the Middle East and the Arab World (after Bahrain). Its territory represents 1 / 1000th that of large countries such as the USA or Canada and 1 / 100th that of Egypt. Despite the fact that it is densely populated1, it is ranked 125th worldwide for its populations, with four million inhabitants2. Its well-known and exploited natural resources consist practically of water resources, soil and vegetation, as well as climate and landscapes. The small size of the country, its population density and the modesty of its natural resources generate a series of perennial consequences, the most important being the vital necessity for Lebanon to be open to the whole world in order to import resources and consumption goods on one hand, and export goods and services, on the other.

    La vallée du Nahr Ibrahim : l’hinterland de Byblos Le terrain d’étude est constitué par le bassin versant du Nahr Ibrahim, l’Adonis de l’Antiquité, fleuve majeur de la façade méditerranéenne du Mont Liban, dont l’estuaire se situe un peu au sud de la cité antique de Byblos qui est classée au Patrimoine mondial par l’UNESCO. Il offre donc un territoire d’une grande richesse, tant au plan environnemental qu’au plan historique. Sanctuaire dit de Yanouh (municipalité de Mghaïra). Temple gréco-romain et basilique paléochrétienne. Objectifs et Approche : Au chapitre III de la Mission de Phénicie, Ernest Renan décrit le fleuve Adonis, les restes remarquables des principaux temples romains de la vallée, à Machnaqa, à Afqa et à Mghaïra- Yanouh où il note la présence d’un « petit monticule de ruines » au sud du sanctuaire gréco-romain, correspondant à un habitat ancien, véritable tell qui n’est pas documenté par les sources écrites anciennes. E. Renan signale l’existence de nécropoles rupestres à Aaqoura et à Tadmor ainsi que des vestiges épigraphiques, dont les fameuses inscriptions de l’empereur Hadrien qui réglementent la gestion forestière, notant que ces gravures sont particulièrement présentes autour du gros bourg de Qartaba, à l’entrée de la haute vallée. En 1938, Daniel Krencker et Willy Zschietzschmann publient une somme monumentale avec des relevés architecturaux des temples du Liban dont ceux de la vallée du Nahr Ibrahim. Dans les années 1960-1970, l’architecte Haroutune Kalayan procède, pour la Direction Générale des Antiquités, aux premiers dégagements et à une reconstruction partielle du temple principal de Mghaïra.
