  • Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80.

Jon Smith, PhD ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 2 An Internship with Kirvin Doak Communications I would like to thank my parents for their ongoing motivation to help me excel in not only in my education but also throughout life. Being the first generation student I never imagined attaining my master's degree, but here I am, thanks to you. Thank you for bringing me lunch when I was in elementary school, rides to the airport for undergrad sorority conferences, having patience with me when I was stressed about graduation, and most importantly for loving me unconditionally. I want to thank my gladiators (you know who you are) who reminded me as to why I was perusing this degree when all I wanted to do was give up. Helping me take notes, ask a question in class for me when I didn't understand a concept, bringing me an endless amount of coffee to ease the writing process and truly believing that I am going to be successful in the near future. And finally, I would like to thank my professors that I have had at Southern Utah University.

The long, long tide of emocore did not recede in the 2000s. Continuing the cross-pollination begun in the previous decade, New York's Coheed And Cambria, fronted by vocalist-guitarist Claudio Sanchez, carried out a historical fusion of the progressive-rock tradition and the emo-core tradition on their sci-fi tetralogy, notably In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth (2003). Pioneers of "progressive emocore" were also Breaking Pangaea in Philadelphia, who crafted the lengthy progressive emo psychodrama Turning on A Cannon To A Whisper (2001). The same city later witnessed the ascent of Circa Survive, whose fusion of hardcore, pop, metal and prog-rock peaked with Juturna (2005). Minus The Bear rejuvinated emo-core in Seattle by stretching Fugazi's original aesthetic to accommodate progressive jamming driven by guitarist Dave Knudson and keyboardist Matt Bayles, best on the EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic (2001) and partially on the album Highly Refined Pirates (2002). Oregon's 31 Knots were perhaps the most versatile and erudite in fusing progressive-rock and melodic/melodramatic emocore, starting with A Word Is Also A Picture Of A Word (2002).

  • Taking Back Sunday Is Crashing Down with Tidal Waves
Taking Back Sunday Is Crashing Down With Tidal Waves Thirteen years ago, I was snooping around my sister’s bedroom. I wanted to be just like her, always in awe of the studded belts and crazy colored Adidas Sneakers she wore. When I spotted her bright blue iPod Nano she got for her birthday, I had the urge to look through her secret music collection. (Pretty sure I was still sporting my electric blue Sony Walkman with limited selection of U2 CDs my Dad insisted I buy.) I thumbed the iPod wheel, put in her earbuds and pressed play. “You’re So Last Summer” starts blaring by Taking Back Sunday from the Tell All Your Friends Album (2002). And I just remember Adam Lazzara’s vocals ripping through my pre-pubescent head, “Maybe I should hate you for this, never really did ever quite get that far.” The lyrics, matched with hardcore sound and pop components, has blessed my playlists ever since. So you thought, “Thirteen years ago and they don’t have anything new out?” WRONG! They are crashing down with their 7th studio album, Tidal Wave, on September 16. I got the opportunity to interview John Nolan, current guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Taking Back Sunday. We touched on the upcoming album, old quotes and a beef from the past! Alyssa Cavallo (Motif): How has your sound grown the last couple of years? John Nolan: [We didn’t] fall back on the standard choice, and [we] challenged ourselves for this album. AC: Some people think your sound has gotten more of an Americana vibe.
