    140 The Buddha of Kamakura The Buddha of Kamakura and the “Modernization” of Buddhist Statuary in the Meiji Period Hiroyuki Suzuki, Tokyo Gakugei University Introduction During Japan’s revolutionary years in the latter half of the nineteenth century, in particular after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, people experienced a great change in the traditional values that had governed various aspects of their life during the Edo period (1603-1867). In their religious life, Buddhism lost its authority along with its economic basis because the Meiji government, propagating Shintoism, repeatedly ordered the proclamation of the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism after the Restoration. The proclamation brought about the anti-Buddhist movement haibutsu kishaku and the nationwide movement doomed Buddhist statuary to a fate it had never before met.1 However, a number of statues were fortunately rescued from destruction and became recognized as sculptural works of Buddhist art in the late 1880s. This paper examines the change of viewpoints that occurred in the 1870s whereby the Buddha of Kamakura, a famous colossus of seated Amida (Amitâbha) from the mid-thirteenth century, was evaluated afresh by Western viewers; it also tries to detect the thresholds that marked the path toward a general acceptance of the idea that Buddhist statuary formed a genre of sculptural works in the fine arts during the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is commonly recognized that in fin-de-siècle France, works such as commemorative statues and large-scale history paintings played a central role in the creation of a national mythology. What has been overlooked, however, is the vital role that 19th-century arts reformers attributed to material culture in the process of forming national subjects. By educating the public’s taste and promoting Republican values, many believed that the decorative arts could serve as a powerful tool with which to forge the bonds of nationhood. Gallé’s works in glass and wood are the product of the artist’s lifelong struggle to conceptualize just such a public role for his art. By studying decorative art objects and contemporary art criticism, then, I examine the ways in which Gallé’s works actively participated in contemporary efforts to define a unified national identity and a modern artistic style for France.

It is noteworthy that the term “art” did not enter the Chinese language itself before the end of 19th century (Clunas, 2017, 26). The first survey of Chinese art, L’art chinoise by Maurice Paléologue (1859–1944), a French diplomat and historian, was published only in 1887. Its British counterpart, Chinese Art by Stephen Wootton Bushell (1844–1908), an amateur Orientalist and physician to the British Legation in Beijing, come out in print in 1904. Both books, covered roughly the same ground: bronzes, sculpture, architecture, painting, carvings, ceramics, lacquer, enamels, glass and textiles. They offered insight into what was termed “Chinese art” at the turn of the 20th century and represented the first attempts at addressing an unrecognized field of art by classifying its objects in terms of material, chronology and use. However, European reflections on Chinese art did not originate in the late 19th century. In his famous Description of the World, Marco Polo mentioned pictures on the walls of imperial palac- es representing “dragons and birds and horsemen and various breeds of beasts and scenes of battle” as well as “portraits of all the kings who ruled over this province in former times” (Sullivan, 1989, 41).

Guth, Royal College of Art and Victoria and Albert Museum This book offers fresh and provocative analytical frames for the study of the formation of nineteenth- century Euro-American collections of Asian art through an examination of the activities of three French collectors, Henri Cernuschi, Emile Guimet, and Edmond de Goncourt. Studies of individuals of this cultural stature risk slipping into cult of personality narratives focusing on the connoisseurial eye, but Ting Chang, who teaches art history at Nottingham University, firmly rejects this time-honored model. Her interpretive method instead situates her subjects within the broader socio-political and economic dynamics of travel and collecting. Exploring the technologies of modernity that enabled, justified, and structured collection formation, she stresses the importance of seeing this as an ideological activity carried out within particular locations and through the agency of various systems, most notably international monetary policy, transportation and visual communication. Her analysis of the asymmetrical power relationships involved in such cross-cultural exchanges is productively complicated by close attention to the local contingencies and constraints that informed the acquisition, interpretation, and representation of Chinese and Japanese material culture. Euro-American collectors, despite the modern technologies at their disposal, she insists, were not unambiguously in power in such transactions.
