Reflecting Antiquity Explores the Rediscovery of Roman Glass and Its Influence on Modern Glass Production
Reflecting Antiquity explores the rediscovery of Roman glass and its influence on modern glass production. It brings together 112 objects from more than 24 lenders, featuring ancient Roman originals as well as the modern replicas they inspired. Following are some of the highlights on view in the exhibition. Portland Vase Base Disk The Portland Vase is the most important and famous work of cameo glass to have survived from ancient Rome. Modern analysis of the vase, with special attention to the elongation of the bubbles preserved in the lower body, suggest that it was originally shaped as an amphora (storage vessel) with a pointed base. At some point in antiquity, the vessel suffered some damage and acquired this replacement disk. The male figure and the foliage on the disk were not carved by the same Unknown artist that created the mythological frieze on the vase. Wearing a Phrygian cap Portland Vase Base Disk Roman, 25 B.C.–A.D. 25 and pointing to his mouth in a gesture of uncertainty, the young man is Paris, a Glass Object: Diam.: 12.2 cm (4 13/16 in.) prince of Troy who chose Aphrodite over Hera and Athena as the most beautiful British Museum. London, England GR1945.9-27.2 goddess on Mount Olympus. It is clear from the way the image is truncated that VEX.2007.3.1 it was cut from a larger composition, presumably depicting the Judgment of Paris. The Great Tazza A masterpiece of cameo-glass carving, this footed bowl (tazza) consists of five layers of glass: semiopaque green encased in opaque white, green, a second white, and pink. -

Abstract 2 Abstract This thesis is an investigation into the development of glass as an expressive medium in China through direct contact with Western methods of making, decoration and forming glass. The investigation proceeds through an analysis of the parallels between glass objects produced from Kangxi (1662-1722) to Qianlong period (1736-96), and contemporary practitioners’ (2000-2009), which is complemented by my own practice. The investigation mainly looks at three aspects and their inter-relationship within these strands. They are: 1) the history of glassmaking from 1696 to 1795 in the Qing dynasty with Western influences; 2) the analysis of Contemporary Chinese studio/academic glass within the imported UK model; 3) the development of my personal glass practice within this matrix. -

"MIRROR WITH A MEMORY": PHOTOGRAPHY AS METAPHOR AND MATERIAL OBJECT IN VICTORIAN CULTURE Sarah Worman A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2017 Committee: Piya Pal-Lapinski, Advisor Kim Coates © 2017 Sarah Worman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Piya Pal-Lapinski, Advisor In the Victorian period, photography was associated with the ghosts of history, con artists in the streets of London, and cultural anxieties about the future of Victorian society. The Victorian practice of photographing ghosts, or spirit photography, showed how Victorians viewed the past, present, and future. By examining the cultural artifact of Georgiana Houghton’s Chronicles of the Photographs of Spiritual Beings (1882), it becomes clear how photography affected Victorian literature as well as Victorian culture. In the short stories, “Oke of Okehurst” (1886) and “A Wicked Voice” (1887), Vernon Lee compared Victorian produced art to art from history. For Lee, the fast paced and highly commercialized art, which was influenced by photography, was not as powerful as art with historical context. An earlier work, Thomas Hardy’s A Laodicean: A Story of To-Day (1881), also showed the connections between photography, history, and uncertainty. The characters try to use photography to try and preserve a crumbling medieval castle, but their attempts end in failure. While technology like telegraphs gives Paula a sense of power, the novel leaves her wishing she had a more stable connection to the past and the future. These examples of Victorian literature show that photography affected Victorian culture at a deeper level than previously thought. -

Noël GUERARD, maire de LESMENILS, secrétaire général de l’ADM54 Une équipe administrative au service des élus L’Association emploie, au 1er septembre 2020, 17 personnes en CDI, sous la responsabilité d’Anne-Mathilde COSTANTINI, directrice et de Laurent HANNEZO, directeur adjoint ; au service administration générale, sous la responsabilité d’Hervé RICHARD, Catherine BOUTEIL, Agnès BRYS, Alicia DIZEK (mise à disposition partielle à l’Association des communes forestières), et Magali KIRSCH , au service juridique, sous la responsabilité de Valentine DUHAUT, Amine BENEDDIF, Anne COGERY, Léo MAFFEIS et Nicolas MARCHETTO, au service informatique, sous la responsabilité de Yann FORT, Rodrigue DARVIEUX, Cyril DIEZ CARDONA, Julien SERRURIER et José VAZ. Bilan des services Les services ont évidemment été impactés par le confinement 2020 lié à la pandémie, mais tous ont continué en télétravail ou présentiel car le nombre de circulaires a explosé durant cette période et tant le service juridique que le service informatique ont accompagné les collectivités pour traverser la crise. Service juridique Au conseil juridique, le nombre de saisines au 1er septembre 2020 atteint un niveau jamais égalé : 5 100 questions d’ores et déjà posées alors que la moyenne annuelle se situe autour de 6 000 questions. Les élections municipales et communautaires ainsi que la période sanitaire exceptionnelle ont été des facteurs déterminants du nombre exponentiel de questions. Les 5 juristes ont eu à cœur de maintenir le service malgré le confinement. Même avec un nombre important de questions, la compétence et la réactivité des juristes dans les dossiers confiés ont continué à être louées et reconnues par les communes et EPCI adhérents. -

URBANISME & ARCHITECTURE DU PAYS DU BASSIN DE BRIEY BRIEY, HOMÉCOURT, JŒUF, MANCIEULLES NOVEMBRE 2013 Le Pays de Briey est un condensé de l’histoire du XXème siècle. Essor industriel, croissance économique et démographique, crise s’y sont chronologiquement succédés. L’héritage de cette mutation est important et se matérialise dans le quotidien de tous les habitants au travers de leur cadre de vie. La ville y est omniprésente et s’offre sous des formes différentes. Ce territoire a en effet connu toutes les grandes évolutions de la fabrique des villes et les principales utopies du XXème siècle. De la fameuse Cité-jardin à la Cité Radieuse de Briey en passant par la Cité ouvrière et la Ville-usine, ce territoire est incontestablement inscrit dans l’histoire de l’urbanisme. C’est dans le but d’en révéler les caractéristiques que le CAUE de Meurthe-et-Moselle et l’Association la Première Rue ont sollicité quatre auteurs pour proposer leur regard sensible et acéré sur les paysages urbains de quatre villes. Il en ressort une histoire et un récit intéressants qui démontrent en images, et s’il le fallait encore, la grande qualité architecturale et urbaine de ce territoire. Nous vous souhaitons une très belle lecture et surtout de belles visites. Whereas the nude male figure on Athenian vases is generally perceived by scholars as representative of heroic, ritualistic or civic nudity, the female form’s nude state remains ambiguous in comparison. In an attempt to uncover the cultural significance behind the appearance of the nude female figure on Athenian vases, multiple scholars have suggested that her utterly exposed state must surely have been indicative of a ‘disreputable’ status, especially that of the hetaira. However, this interpretation is problematic as it ultimately restricts the possible function(s) of the nude female figure to being primarily erotic in nature. -
