  • Bingaman Safe, Johnson Dems' Only Threat in Open Seat Race
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 8, 2011 INTERVIEWS: DEAN DEBNAM 888-621-6988 / 919-880-4888 (serious media inquiries only please, other questions can be directed to Tom Jensen) QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POLL: TOM JENSEN 919-744-6312 Bingaman safe, Johnson Dems’ only threat in open seat race Raleigh, N.C. – New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman generally cruises to re-election, and if he chooses to go for a sixth term, he would start off as a heavy favorite. But there has been some speculation he will instead retire. In his stead, Democrats should still be in strong shape to hold his seat unless popular former Governor Gary Johnson declines a run for president to make a bid for Congress’ upper chamber instead. With a 56-27 approval-disapproval margin, Bingaman is more popular at home than all but four of the 77 colleagues which PPP has measured in the last year or so. This strong favor with his voters gives Bingaman formidable odds to walk to re-election, even against Johson, whose 44-32 favorability rating makes him considerably the best liked of the non-Bingaman candidates, and who is almost equally popular with Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Johnson comes closest to beating the incumbent, yet still trails, 51-40. By comparison, Rep. Steve Pearce lags Bingaman, 57-34, and Rep. Heather Wilson trails, 56-37. The Republicans all do what would make them far more competitive in almost any other state: they at least match the incumbent in party unity and take more of his voters from him than he does of theirs.

12/19/2018 1953 New Year Honours 1953 New Year Honours The New Year Honours 1953 for the United Kingdom were announced on 30 December 1952,[1] to celebrate the year passed and mark the beginning of 1953. This was the first New Year Honours since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. The Honours list is a list of people who have been awarded one of the various orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom. Honours are split into classes ("orders") and are graded to distinguish different degrees of achievement or service, most medals are not graded. The awards are presented to the recipient in one of several investiture ceremonies at Buckingham Palace throughout the year by the Sovereign or her designated representative. The orders, medals and decorations are awarded by various honours committees which meet to discuss candidates identified by public or private bodies, by government departments or who are nominated by members of the public.[2] Depending on their roles, those people selected by committee are submitted to Ministers for their approval before being sent to the Sovereign for final The insignia of the Grand Cross of the approval. As the "fount of honour" the monarch remains the final arbiter for awards.[3] In the case Order of St Michael and St George of certain orders such as the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order they remain at the personal discretion of the Queen.[4] The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour, and arranged by honour, with classes (Knight, Knight Grand Cross, etc.) and then divisions (Military, Civil, etc.) as appropriate.

중세르네상스영문학 제18권 2호 (2010): 317-340 Raising John’s Body:13) Ælfric’s Homily for the Assumption of John the Apostle* Rebecca I. Starr (Won Kwang University) Introduction Ælfric, Abbot of Eynsham, was a Benedictine monk, educated at Winchester in Wessex, which was refounded by Bishop Æthelwold for the Benedictine Reform movement in 973. The Benedictines under Æthelwold had received unprecedented support, material and devotional, from King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth in the mid to late tenth century (Yorke 65-68).1) In 987 when Cerne Abbas was founded, Ælfric was commissioned by Æthelmær, the son of the powerful alderman Æthelweard, to serve as mass-priest there. He was soon asked to translate Latin homilies into English, and the result was the Catholic * This research was supported by a 2009 Won Kwang University research grant. 1) See Godden’s “Money, Power and Morality.” 318 Rebecca I. Starr Homilies (ca. 992-995; CH hereafter). Manuscript evidence suggests these homilies were read to congregations throughout Anglo-Saxon England.2) Ælfric was later appointed to the abbacy at Eynsham, also in Wessex, and while he lived he was sought out by the best educated and most influential men in the country to explain doctrine and write subsequent texts and translations.3) Elaine Treharne shows that more than one hundred years after the Norman Conquest (1066), after the official language of the English courts had been French for many generations and parlance was changing from Old English into Middle English, Ælfric’s homilies were still read and distributed in English. Moreover, Aaron Kleist points out that in the sixteenth century, in the service of Henry VIII, Matthew Parker used CH as a “historical precedent” for an English church that differed from the Catholic Church (312).
