ERIE ROBERTS STAFF WRITER Diamond. We know him. We grew up with him. DustinEvery week, or perhaps everyday, he came into our homes and made our little 8-year-old selves laugh at his antics. He is Screech from the NBC sitcom series "Good Morning Miss Bliss." However, he is more widely known as the geeky charac- ter of the same name from the popluar television show"Saved By the Bell." As the dorky, awkward high school student, Diamond has earned a special place in the hearts of most student viewers. Although "Saved By the Bell" can still be seen 16 times per week in syndication in 105 countries, few people know Diamond as the varied actor and comic that he is. Since his stint on "Saved by the Bell" and its sequels, he has appeared in 17 feature films as well as several guest appearances in television shows. Perhaps his most memorable television appearance in recent memory was his bout in "Celebrity Boxing 2" against Ron Pallio, the actor who played Horshack in the 70s sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter." In addition to his acting credentials, Diamond is also the bass player in the band "Salty the Pocketknife." Their self-titled CD is set to be released early this year. An avid chess player, Diamond has made his own instructional'video entitled "Dustin Diamond Teaches Chess." Last, but certainly not least on an already lengthy list of credentials, Diamond is currently perform- ing to sellout crowds at colleges and comedy clubs across the country as a stand up comedian. Lol....Brb...Hos....*winks* *smiles* J J ;) ^^ If you know the meaning of these "sentences," you've obvious- ly navigated through a conversation in pop culture recently. I will even go further and safely guess that you have at one time - in your life used an instant message program. If you haven't used an instant message program, kudos to you! You have man- aged to not get sucked into a highly addictive time-eater, and you have also escaped the future bane of the English language. However, be warned: due to the popularity of Instant Messenger in our culture, its acronyms and grammatical structures will seep into your realm of spoken and written word. In a few years, get ready to use the phrase "lol" in a sentence. Get ready to read a paper with the obnoxious yellow smiley substituted for an adjective. IM lingo will have infiltrated our rhetoric! A discussion on the degradation of the English language may sound hopelessly redundant and self evident to my linguistical- ly inclined friends and colleagues. I am in agreement that English as a language has been degrading for centuries from its old forms at a remarkable pace. Several centuries ago, English was noted to have been a completely different language between only two generations. The reasons for the fast evolu- tion (or more accurately devolution) might be strong influences from many other languages and a fast assimilation rate. English will continue to change, so long as society asks it to change. Why, then, am I making a big fuss about what IM is doing to English, if English has, and always will, degrade anyway? This round with English is not about colloquialisms that change the meaning of words and simplify grammatical structure. We are coming dangerously close to eliminating too many words from our vocabulary. We have invented so many acronyms that words themselves are becoming obsolete. In 1970, average high school students had 40,000 words at their disposal. Today they have 10,000. I would be curious to see the results had that sur- vey included acronyms. High school students of today probably Ha carry hundreds to thousands of acronyms in their memory. In. the future, we may not have words at all, just letters. I guess that will be O.K. This affect has been long in coming, as our nation's first acronym (Okay) has been around for close to a century. IM can- not be blamed for the implementation of these acronyms, but it has certainly helped escalate their use, as well as generate more.
