Gift-giving is one of the things that stand at the center of social relationships across many cultures. “The gift imposes an identity upon the giver as well as the receiver.”1 It is both productive of social relationships and affirms them; it establishes and clarifies social status, displays power, strengthens alliances, and creates debt and obligations. This was particularly true in the chaotic period following the collapse of the Han empire at the turn of the third century, often referred to by the reign title of the last Han emperor as the Jian’an 建安 era (196-220).

  • The Art of Calligraphy in Post-Mao China
ASIANetwork Exchange | spring 2012 | volume 19 | 2 Negotiating with the Past: The Art of Calligraphy in Post-Mao China Li-hua Ying Abstract: Chinese Calligraphy, an integrated form that combines language, art, phi- losophy, and poetry, was considered the highest art in traditional China. Although no longer used for daily communication, calligraphy manages to sustain its pres- ence in Chinese cultural life even in the computer age. The classical forms that were canonized nearly two millennia ago continue to command a large following while new styles and new practices have emerged in response to social, cultural and artistic influences. This paper looks at present trends in calligraphy and calligraphy- inspired practices against the backdrop of tradition. It is apparent that even within the most radical changes that have taken place, whether in the way calligraphy is practiced or evaluated, there are strong indications that the fundamental aesthetic principles passed down from the past are still very much alive today, showing the resilience of this ancient art. Keywords writing; art; calligraphy; language Chinese calligraphy, an integrated form that combines language, art, philosophy, and Li-hua Ying is an Associate Pro- poetry, was considered the highest art in traditional China, “the most fundamental artistic fessor in the Chinese and Japa- manifestation of the national mind.”1 Although no longer used for daily communication, nese Program at Bard College. calligraphy manages to sustain its presence in Chinese cultural life even in the computer age. • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 71
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 71. Last time, we left off with Cao Cao entertaining thoughts of launching another campaign against the South to put down Sun Quan and Liu Bei before they became too much trouble. But first, he wanted to eliminate a longtime thorn in his side Ma Teng, a general who was stationed in Xiliang, which was in the northwestern borderlands of the empire. Ma Teng, along with Liu Bei, had been part of a failed conspiracy to assassinate Cao Cao years ago, and the fact that he had a sizable army in the west had always kept Cao Cao up at night. So Cao Cao decided to use a little trickery: He was going to send an imperial decree giving Ma Teng a promotion and putting him in charge of leading a campaign against the South. This would give Cao Cao a chance to lure Ma Teng to the capital and get rid of him. So let’s pause for a moment and give you a little background on Ma Teng. He was the descendant of one of the most famous generals of the Han Dynasty. His father had been a justice of the peace in a county in the west during the reign of Emperor Huan (2), which was now more than four decades ago. His father later lost his office and was stranded in the west, where he took up with the Jiang (1) people, a powerful borderland tribe, and Ma Teng was the product of a marriage between his father and a woman of the Jiang tribe.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 120. Last
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 120. Last time, Zhuge Liang continued to roll on his Northern campaign. First, he dealt the Wei minister of the interior such a devastating tongue-lashing that the guy literally died on the spot. Then, he outsmarted the Wei grand commander Cao Zhen and dealt him a big defeat. Cao Zhen was beaten so badly that he decided to seek help from the Qiang tribes. The Qiang people, you may remember, resided around the northwestern frontiers of the empire. They used to be friendly with the Shu general Ma Chao, but ever since Ma Chao was defeated by Cao Cao, the Qiang had pledged their allegiance to Cao Cao and subsequently to the kingdom of Wei. The king of the Qiang nation relied on two top officials. On the civil administration side, he had the prime minister Ya (3) Dan (1). On the military side, he looked to the commander Yue (4) Ji (2). When Cao Zhen’s messenger arrived in the territory of the Qiang, he first went to see this prime minister Ya (3) Dan (1) and presented the gifts and told him the purpose of the visit. Ya Dan then led the envoy to see the king, who read the letter and consulted his staff. “We have maintained relations with the kingdom of Wei,” Ya Dan said. “Now that Commander Cao is requesting our aid, it is only right that we should help.” The king agreed and dispatched Ya Dan and Commander Yue (4) Ji (2) with 150,000 men, who were all skilled in archery, spears and swords, studded mace, and flying hammers.
