ALASKA In the state of Alaska, you must be registered with the Alaska State Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician and hold a license from the state.

Renewal of your license is required every two years, along with $100 renewal fee and proof of continuing education credits.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Alaska

▪ Must be at least 18 years old ▪ Must possess a high school diploma or GED ▪ Cannot have any felony convictions in past 5 years ▪ Must be fluent in English – writing, reading and speaking

Training Requirements Formal training pharmacy technician is not required in Alaska. However before performing the duties of a pharmacy tech, you are required to complete on-the-job training by the licensed pharmacist who is in charge.

This training must be consistent with the tasks that will be performed on the job.

After receipt of license, you are then required to obtain at least 10 hours of continuing education during the license period.

Certification Requirements National certification as a pharmacy technician (CPhT) is not required in Alaska.

12 AAC 52.140. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN LICENSE. (a) An applicant who meets the requirements on the checklist set out in (b) of this section has demonstrated the necessary qualifications for a pharmacy technician license. An applicant who does not meet the requirements on the checklist or whose responses on the form for application do not clearly show that the applicant is qualified to receive a pharmacy technician license will not be issued a license (b) The following checklist is established by the board for review of an application for a pharmacy technician license; a pharmacy technician license will be issued to an applicant who (1) submits a completed form for application, including (A) the applicant’s name, mailing address, and telephone number; and (B) the applicant’s date of birth that shows the applicant is at least 18 years old; (2) certifies that the applicant has not been convicted of a felony or another crime that affects the applicant’s ability to perform the duties of a pharmacy technician safely and competently; (3) certifies that the applicant has earned a high school diploma or its equivalent and provides the name of the issuing institution and the date the diploma or its equivalent was issued; (4) certifies that the applicant is fluent in the reading, writing, and speaking of the English language; and (5) pays the application fee and the pharmacy technician license fee established in 12 AAC 02.310. (c) A pharmacy technician license expires on June 30 of even-numbered years and may be renewed.

ARIZONA In the state of , you must obtain a license with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician. You can obtain your license as a pharmacy technician trainee or as a full pharmacy technician. To apply as a full pharmacy technician, you must have earned your PCTB certification.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Arizona

If you are applying as a trainee technician (without a PTCB certificate), the following is required ▪ Must be at least 18 years of age ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Provide proof of US residency (if you are not a citizen, provide proof that you are eligible to work in the US) ▪ Must be a high school graduate or equivalent

If you are applying as a full technician (has earned PTCB certificate), make sure you have the following: ▪ Must be at least 18 years of age ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Provide proof of PCTB certification (either PTCB certificate, PTCB wall card or letter of passing score from the PCTB) ▪ Provide proof of US residency (if you are not a citizen, provide proof that you are eligible to work in the US) ▪ Must be a high school graduate or equivalent ▪ Complete a pharmacy technician training program that meets the standards prescribed in R4-23-1105(B)(2)

ARKANSAS The state of Arkansas requires registration with the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

There is no specific certification requirement in Alaska, you can be hired as a Pharmacy Technician as long as you’re being trained by a licensed pharmacist. Once you’ve been hired, you need to register with the state board.

COLORADO According to the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, which recently changed its name to Division of Professions and Occupations, the state of Colorado does not register, certify or license pharmacy techs. Therefore, there are no pharmacy technician requirements in Colorado set forth to work as a pharmacy tech.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Colorado Even though the state does not require registration or licensing of pharmacy techs, you should meet at least the following criteria:

▪ Be at least 18 years old ▪ Have a high school diploma or a GED ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Pass a criminal background check

Training Requirements As Colorado does not regulate this career field, it is best to attend a training program or school that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System (ASHP).

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Colorado.

12-42.5-119. Limited authority to delegate activities constituting practice of pharmacy to pharmacy interns or pharmacy technicians. (1) A pharmacist may supervise up to six persons who are either pharmacy interns or pharmacy technicians, of whom no more than two may be pharmacy interns. If three or more pharmacy technicians are on duty, the majority must be certified by a nationally recognized certification board, possess a degree from an accredited pharmacy technician training program, or have completed five hundred hours of experiential training in duties described in section 12-42.5-102 (31)(b) at the pharmacy as certified by the pharmacist manager within eighteen months of hire. (2) The pharmacy shall retain documentation verifying the training for review by the pharmacist responsible for the final check on prescriptions filled by the pharmacy technician and shall make the documentation available for inspection by the board. (3) The supervision ratio specified in subsection (1) of this section does not include other ancillary personnel who may be in the outlet but who are not performing duties described in section 12-42.5-102 (31)(b) that are delegated to the interns or pharmacy technicians.

CONNECTICUT Registration in the state of Connecticut is required with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection to work as a pharmacy technician. Prior to registering, you must currently hold a position in Connecticut at a pharmacy.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Connecticut The following are the minimum requirements for registering:

▪ Must be currently employed at a pharmacy in Connecticut

Training Requirements The state does not require a formal training program for registration. However, the pharmacy manager is responsible for conducting an on-the-job training program and training maintaining records for the technicians. The training is to be in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes Section 20-598a.

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Connecticut.

DELAWARE

Registration in the state of Delaware is not required with the Delaware Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Delaware The following are the minimum requirements to work as a pharmacy technician:

▪ Must be at least 18 years of age ▪ Completed a Board approved pharmacy technician training program OR has passed a national certification exam

Training Requirements. Pharmacy Technicians shall successfully complete a training program. Training shall begin immediately upon initiation of employment and be completed within 90 days. Once training is commenced the technician in training may work in the pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist or a trained technician. Areas of training stipulated by the Board consists of 10 hours in the following areas as specified here.

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Delaware. But only pharmacy techs who are certified by passing the PTCB exam or other national certification examination can assist the pharmacist with reconstitution of oral solutions, contacting the doctor’s office for authorization to refill prescriptions and providing compounding assistance to the pharmacist.

19.0 Technicians: Qualifications, Training, and Duties 19.1 Qualifications and Training 19.1.1 Pharmacy Technicians shall successfully complete a training program. Training shall begin immediately upon initiation of employment and be completed within 90 days. Once training is commenced the technician in training may work in the pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist or a trained technician. 19.1.1.1 The permit holder shall ensure that pharmacy technicians successfully complete a training program. Once training has commenced, the technician in training may work in the pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. For the purposes of this subsection, "direct supervision" means that a pharmacist is present in the pharmacy at all times. 19.1.1.2 The areas of training required are to be determined by the pharmacist-in-charge and will be appropriate to the practice site and responsibilities assigned to the technicians. Training should be in the following areas: 19.1.1.2.1 general drug and dosage form knowledge 19.1.1.2.2 medical terminology 19.1.1.2.3 pharmaceutical calculations 19.1.1.2.4 prescription labeling requirements 19.1.1.2.5 general filling/dispensing responsibilities 19.1.1.2.6 profile record system requirements 19.1.1.2.7 requirements for patient counseling 19.1.1.2.8 confidentiality 19.1.1.2.9 safety practices 19.1.1.2.10 inventory functions 19.1.1.2.11 knowledge of applicable State and Federal Statutes and Regulations 19.1.1.2.12 other site-specific parameters 19.1.1.3 The general content of the training program must be maintained in the policy and procedure manual. 19.1.1.4 Documentation of successful training in specific areas by oral or written evaluation will be maintained and will be available for inspection by the Board of Pharmacy. TITLE 24 REGULATED PROFESSIONS AND OCCUPATIONS DELAWARE ADMINISTRATIVE CODE 40 19.1.1.5 Supervision. Pharmacy technicians must be supervised by a registered pharmacist who will be responsible for the activities of the pharmacy technicians. 19.1.2 Certified pharmacy technicians must successfully pass the PTCB Exam or other national technician certification exam approved by the Board of Pharmacy. Only certified pharmacy technicians or those individuals approved pursuant to subsection 19.1.2.1 may assist the pharmacist by reconstituting oral solutions and contacting the prescriber or their agent to obtain refill authorization or other patient or prescription information of a non-clinical nature, or assisting the pharmacist with compounding. 19.1.2.1 A pharmacy technician completing a training program approved by the Board in lieu of passing the PTCB exam or passing a national certification program may perform the functions of a certified technician. However, approval to perform the functions of the certified technician is limited to the approved setting and is not transferable to any other facility. 19.2 Allowed Activities 19.2.1 Except in emergency situations for short periods where staff is unavailable only pharmacy technicians and certified pharmacy technicians may assist the pharmacist or deliver prescriptions in the pharmacy to a patient or the patient's agent. 19.2.2 Pharmacy technicians and certified pharmacy technicians may carry out any pharmacy-related duty assigned to them by their supervising pharmacist except for those activities specifically excluded by 24 Del.C. §§2507(b) and 2502(19).

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Registration is not required in the District of Columbia to work as a pharmacy technician. The District of Columbia, Department of Health does not provide regulation for pharmacy technicians. Therefore, there are no requirements in DC set forth to work as a pharmacy tech.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in DC While the District does not require registration or licensing of pharmacy technicians, you at least should meet the following criteria:

▪ Be at least 18 years old ▪ Have a high school diploma or a GED ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Pass a criminal background check ▪ Completed a pharmacy technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists

Training Requirements As DC does not regulate the pharmacy technician career field, your best option is to attend a training program or school that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in the District of Columbia.

FLORIDA Registration in the state of Florida is required with the Florida Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician. Prior to registering, you must currently hold a position in Connecticut at a pharmacy.

Renewal of registration must be done on a biennial basis by submitting a fee of $50 and completing 20 hours of pharmacy continuing education.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Florida The following are the minimum requirements for registering:

▪ Must be at least 17 years of age ▪ Completed a pharmacy technician training program approved by the Board of Pharmacy OR Enrolled in a Board approved program and is receiving on-the-job training If you are a licensed as a pharmacy intern, you may be employed as a pharmacy tech without payment of registration

Training Requirements The state of Florida requires completion or enrollment at a Board approved training program.

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Florida.

465.014 Pharmacy technician.— (1) A person other than a licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern may not engage in the practice of the profession of pharmacy, except that a licensed pharmacist may delegate to pharmacy technicians who are registered pursuant to this section those duties, tasks, and functions that do not fall within the purview of s. 465.003(13). All such delegated acts must be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist who is responsible for all such acts performed by persons under his or her supervision. A registered pharmacy technician, under the supervision of a pharmacist, may initiate or receive communications with a practitioner or his or her agent, on behalf of a patient, regarding refill authorization requests. A licensed pharmacist may not supervise more than one registered pharmacy technician unless otherwise permitted by the guidelines adopted by the board. The board shall establish guidelines to be followed by licensees or permittees in determining the circumstances under which a licensed pharmacist may supervise more than one pharmacy technician. (2) Any person who wishes to work as a pharmacy technician in this state must register by filing an application with the board on a form adopted by rule of the board. The board shall register each applicant who has remitted a registration fee set by the board, not to exceed $50 biennially; has completed the application form and remitted a nonrefundable application fee set by the board, not to exceed $50; is at least 17 years of age; and has completed a pharmacy technician training program approved by the Board of Pharmacy. Notwithstanding any requirements in this subsection, any registered pharmacy technician registered pursuant to this section before January 1, 2011, who has worked as a pharmacy technician for a minimum of 1,500 hours under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or received certification as a pharmacy technician by certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies is exempt from the requirement to complete an initial training program for purposes of registration as required by this subsection. (3) A person whose license to practice pharmacy has been denied, suspended, or restricted for disciplinary purposes is not eligible to register as a pharmacy technician. (4) Notwithstanding the requirements of this section or any other provision of law, a pharmacy technician student who is enrolled in a pharmacy technician training program that is approved by the board may be placed in a pharmacy for the purpose of obtaining practical training. A pharmacy technician student shall wear identification that indicates his or her student status when performing the functions of a pharmacy technician, and registration under this section is not required. (5) Notwithstanding the requirements of this section or any other provision of law, a person who is licensed by the state as a pharmacy intern may be employed as a registered pharmacy technician without paying a registration fee or filing an application with the board to register as a pharmacy technician. (6) As a condition of registration renewal, a registered pharmacy technician shall complete 20 hours biennially of continuing education courses approved by the board or the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, of which 4 hours must be via live presentation and 2 hours must be related to the prevention of errors and pharmacy law. (7) The board shall adopt rules that require each registration issued by the board under this section to be displayed in such a manner as to make it available to the public and to facilitate inspection by the department. The board may adopt other rules as necessary to administer this section. (8) If the board finds that an applicant for registration as a pharmacy technician or that a registered pharmacy technician has committed an act that constitutes grounds for discipline as set forth in s. 456.072(1) or has committed an act that constitutes grounds for denial of a license or disciplinary action as set forth in this chapter, including an act that constitutes a substantial violation of s. 456.072(1) or a violation of this chapter which occurred before the applicant or registrant was registered as a pharmacy technician, the board may enter an order imposing any of the penalties specified in s. 456.072(2) against the applicant or registrant.

GEORGIA Registration in the state of Georgia is required with the Georgia Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Georgia The following are the minimum requirements for registering:

▪ Must be at least 17 years of age ▪ Must be enrolled in high school or have a high school diploma or GED ▪ Completed a criminal background check

Training Requirements No formal training or continuing education is required.

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Georgia, although the Board recognized the PTCB program. If you are PTCB certified, be sure to submit a copy of your PTCB certificate to the Board.

HAWAII Registration is not required in the state of Hawaii to work as a pharmacy technician. The Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs, Pharmacy and Pharmacist Licensing Area does not provide regulation for pharmacy technicians. Therefore, there are no pharmacy technician requirements in Hawaii set forth to work as a pharmacy tech.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Hawaii While the state does not require registration or licensing of pharmacy technicians, you should meet at least the following criteria:

▪ Be at least 18 years old ▪ Have a high school diploma or a GED ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Pass a criminal background check ▪ Complete a pharmacy technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists

Certification Requirements National certification is not required in Hawaii.

§16-95-86 Scope of practice of a pharmacy technician. A pharmacy technician may perform the following tasks, not requiring professional judgment, under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist: (1) Process prescription labels, drug packaging, stocking, delivery, record keeping, pricing, documentation of third party reimbursements, and preparing, labeling, compounding, storing, and providing medication; and (2) Medication preparation is permissible provided that the pharmacy technician: (A) Has a working knowledge of the pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols commonly used in the prescribing, dispensing, and charting of ; (B) Is able to perform the arithmetic calculations required for the usual dosage determination and solution preparation; (C) Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the pharmacy technician's duties and responsibilities, including standards of ethics and applicable laws and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy; (D) Has a working knowledge of drug dosages, route of administration, and dosage forms and therapeutics; (E) Has a working knowledge of the procedures and operations relating to the manufacturing, packaging, and labeling of drug products; and (F) Has an appropriate working knowledge of the procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and parenteral admixture operations.

IDAHO Registration in the state of Idaho is required with the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

Registration as a pharmacy technician in Idaho is available in three variations:

▪ Technician-In-Training Waiver – if you are at least 16 years old and either in a school supervised program or a child of a pharmacy owner. ▪ Technician-In-Training – where you are eligible to apply if you are already employed by a pharmacy but have not yet earned a national pharmacy technician certification. ▪ Certified Pharmacy Technician – where you are already a pharmacy technician and have been approved by one of the national certification boards.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Idaho The minimum requirements for registration vary according to the type of applicant you are:

▪ Technician-In-Training Waiver ▪ Must be at least 16 years of age ▪ Enrolled in a pharmacy program OR child of a pharmacy owner ▪ Technician-In-Training ▪ Must be at least 18 years old (unless a waiver is granted) ▪ Graduated high school or holds a GED ▪ Be of good moral character ▪ Has and maintains employment as a technician-in-training ▪ Certified Pharmacy Technician ▪ Must be at least 18 years old (unless a waiver is granted) ▪ Graduated high school or holds a GED ▪ Be of good moral character ▪ Earned and maintained status as a certified pharmacy tech (CPhT) via the PTCB.

Training Requirements Idaho does not have specific requirements for training. However, be sure to attend a training program or school that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Certification Requirements National certification is required in Idaho to register as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. National certification is accepted either from the PTCB or ExCPT.

040. CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN REGISTRATION. To be approved for registration as a certified technician, a person must satisfy the following requirements: (7-1-18) 01. Age. Be at least sixteen (16) years of age; (7-1-18) 02. Education. Be a high school graduate or the recipient of a high school equivalency diploma; (7-1-18) 03. Personal Characteristics. Be of good moral character and temperate habits; and (7-1-18) 04. Certification. Have obtained and maintained certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) status through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), or their successors. (7-1-18) 041. TECHNICIAN-IN-TRAINING REGISTRATION. 01. Applying for Registration. A person who has not obtained or maintained technician certification may apply for registration as a technician-in-training if the person satisfies all other requirements for registration as a certified technician. (7-1-18) 02. Duration. An individual may register as a technician-in-training for a maximum of two (2) years from the date of issuance. (7-1-18) 042. STUDENT TECHNICIAN. 01. Registration Requirements. To be approved for registration as a student technician, an applicant must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, currently enrolled and in good standing in a high school or college supervised program, and not meet the requirement for registration as a technician-in-training or certified technician. (7-1-18) 02. Exemption from Criminal Background Check. Student technician candidates under the age of eighteen (18) are exempt from the fingerprint-based criminal history check requirement of Idaho Code. (7-1-18) 03. Renewal. A student technician registration must be renewed annually by July 15; however, the renewal fee will be waived, if renewed on time, for the duration of the student’s enrollment in a technician training program. 043. TECHNICIAN EXEMPTIONS. 01. Certification Exemption for Continuous Employment. A technician registered with the Board and employed as a technician on June 30, 2009, is not required to obtain or maintain certification as a condition of registration renewal after June 30, 2009, as long as the registrant remains continuously employed as a technician by the same employer. If a registrant that qualifies for this exemption disrupts continuous employment as a technician with one employer, or if any change of ownership occurs at the technician’s place of employment, the technician registration will become invalid. (7-1-18) 02. Duration Exemption. The Board’s executive director may grant a brief extension of duration of registration for a technician-in-training or a student technician for the purposes of employment continuity in the instance in which a technician is awaiting the completion of a requirement necessary to become a certified technician. No waiver may be granted in the instance in which the individual delayed sitting for the certification exam that the applicant was otherwise qualified to sit for.

ILLINOIS The state of Illinois requires registration for certification with the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation to work as a pharmacy technician. There are three variations to apply for: Certified Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technician and Student Pharmacist.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Illinois The following are the minimum requirements for registering as a Certified Pharmacy Technician:

▪ Must be at least 18 years of age. ▪ Provide proof of high school completion or GED, or currently attending high school. ▪ Must have graduated from an approved pharmacy technology training program OR verified training from the licensed pharmacist of the pharmacy where you are employed. ▪ Is of good moral character ▪ Have passed the ExCPT or PTCE examination

Minimum requirements for registering as a Pharmacy Technician are:

▪ Must be at least 16 years of age. ▪ Provide proof of high school completion or GED, or currently attending high school.

Minimum requirements for registering as a Student Pharmacist are:

▪ Must be at least 18 years of age. ▪ Have proof of enrollment in an approved School of Pharmacy and are a student in good academic standing.

Training Requirements Training for pharmacy technology must be obtained from one of the programs or schools approved by the a nationally recognize accreditation agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

INDIANA The state of Indiana requires registration for certification with the Indiana Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Indiana The minimum requirements for certification vary according to the type of applicant you are:

▪ Must be at least 18 years old (if you are not yet 18, then you need to have a qualifying pharmacist at your pharmacy of employment submit a statement on your behalf in support of your application. ▪ Must possess high school diploma or GED ▪ Must submit to a criminal background check ▪ Has not been convicted of a crime involving drugs or controlled substances ▪ Completed a training program that is approved by the Board OR passed an examination by either the PTCB or ExCPT

If you have not completed training, or passed one of the national examinations, you can instead apply for the Technician-in-Training Permit. The same requirements as above apply, except training or passing a national certification exam does not apply.

IOWA To work or train as a pharmacy technician in the state of Iowa, you are required to register with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

KANSAS In the state of Kansas, you are required to register with the Kansas Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

KENTUCKY If you live in the state of Kentucky, you are required to register with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

A person may assist in the practice of pharmacy without obtaining the registration required by this section if the person: (a) Has filed an application with the board in accordance with KRS 315.136 and no more than thirty (30) days has elapsed since the date the applicant was first employed by the pharmacy. The exemption shall not apply if: 1. The application has been denied; 2. The person is less than sixteen (16) years of age; or 3. The person has previously been denied a registration or has had a registration revoked or suspended in any jurisdiction and the registration has not yet been issued or reinstated; (b) Is in the employ of a son, daughter, spouse, parent, or legal guardian; or (c) Is participating in a work-study program through an accredited secondary or postsecondary educational institution.

LOUISIANA To work as a pharmacy technician in the state of Louisiana, you are required to register with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

NEVADA To work as a pharmacy technician in the state of Nevada, registration is required with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy. Two types of registrations are available: Pharmaceutical Technician and Pharmaceutical Technician In Training.

If the state does not regulate pharmacy technicians, then must show proof of at least 1,500 hours of pharmacy experience over the preceding 3 years, successful completion of at least 350 hours working in a Nevada pharmacy and a written statement to the Board from the pharmacist in charge stating that you demonstrated the competence to perform effectively ▪ Successful completion of at least 1,500 hours as a pharmaceutical technician in training ▪ Successful completion of a training program for pharmacy technicians given by a branch of the Armed Forces of the US ▪ Certified by either the PTCB or ICPT – if you have completed a pharmacy technician program in another state and that program is accredited or approved by the proper authorities in that state

The following are the minimum requirements for registering as a Pharmaceutical Technician in Training: ▪ Be at least 18 years old ▪ Have a high school diploma or a GED ▪ Must not have been convicted of any misdemeanor or felony regarding moral turpitude, dishonesty or drugs ▪ Must have no history of drug abuse ▪ Must participate in training on the job to gain experience for employment as a pharmaceutical technician

Training Requirements The state of Nevada sets forth that the pharmacist of the pharmacy provides training for techs employed. This training must have an initial training program at the start of employment and also a minimum of 12 hours of in- service training during the 2 year timeframe preceding registration renewal. The pharmacist must maintain a written record of the initial and ongoing training.

Pharmacy techs may also complete a training program that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs that are accredited by the ASHP have shown that they meet the recommended requirements to help enable you to pass one of the national exams.

All pharmacy technicians must obtain a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education (CE) prior to renewal of license.

NEW JERSEY The state of New Jersey requires registration with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.

▪ Be at least 18 years old ▪ Have a high school diploma or a GED ▪ Submit a certification attesting to the fact that he or she is proficient in written and spoken English ▪ Must be of good moral character ▪ Pass a background check ▪ Works under the immediate personal supervision of a pharmacist ▪ Any person who is hired as a pharmacy technician who is not registered with the Board shall be designated a pharmacy technician applicant. A person may only be considered a pharmacy technician applicant one time and only for a maximum of 180 consecutive days. During the first 10 days of employment, the pharmacy technician applicant shall file an application with the Board to begin the pharmacy technician registration process. The applicant shall retain proof of filing the application until he or she receives his or her registration. If at the conclusion of the 180-day period, the pharmacy technician applicant has not completed the pharmacy technician registration process, consistent with (a) above, the applicant shall cease performing pharmacy technician functions in the pharmacy.

In order to become registered as a technician in North Carolina the law requires that an applicant shall present to the Board of Pharmacy satisfactory evidence that the applicant: ▪ Holds a high school diploma or equivalent or is currently enrolled in a program that awards a high school diploma; ▪ Is employed by a pharmacy holding a valid in-state pharmacy permit; ▪ Completes a training program approved by the supervising pharmacist-manager that includes: pharmacy terminology, pharmacy calculations, dispensing systems and labeling requirements, pharmacy laws and regulations, record keeping and documentation, and the proper handling and storage of medications. OKLAHOMA To work as a pharmacy tech in the state of Oklahoma, you must apply for a permit with the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Oklahoma The following are the minimum requirements for registering as a Pharmacy Technician:

▪ A pharmacy technician must have completed a high school education or G.E.D. equivalence, be of good moral char acter, be non‐impaired (e.g. alcohol or drugs) and have adequate education to perform assigned duties. ▪ A pharmacy manager employing a currently permitted technician must document training of that technician within 10 days of hire. ▪ The pharmacy technician must, at a minimum, satisfactorily complete a pharmacy technician on‐the‐ job training (OJT) program described in 535:15‐13‐13. ▪ To be eligible for a pharmacy technician permit, an applicant must maintain compliance with the requirem ents in this Title, 535.25 and 535:15.

Training Requirements Pharmacy technicians are required to complete two phases of training. Phase I training is the initial training and is performed at the pharmacy of employment. The pharmacy manager is in charge of developing and maintaining a training program for all techs employed by the pharmacy. Phase II training is on the job and can begin after permit has been received. This phase must be completed within 90 days after receipt of the permit. All training must be documented by the pharmacist.

Training Requirements The pharmacist-in-charge of the pharmacy you are employed by is required to develop training for its pharmacy technicians and certified pharmacy technicians that is appropriate for the tasks that the technician will be fulfilling. The training must comprise both on-the-job training and instructional education. The pharmacist must maintain the documentation of training for each technician employed. Certified pharmacy technicians are also required to earn approved continuing education credits on a yearly basis.

Certification Requirements The state of Oregon requires national certification from the PTCB or the NHA to be a Certified Oregon Pharmacy Technician.

PENNSYLVANIA The Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy does not provide regulation or license pharmacy techs, therefore to work as a pharmacy technician you are not required to submit an application and have it approved before you begin working in a pharmacy.

Even though the state of Pennsylvania does not require registration to work as a pharmacy technician, working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist in a pharmacy is required. RHODE ISLAND To work as a pharmacy technician in the state of Rhode Island, a license as a Pharmacy Technician is required with the Rhode Island State Board of Pharmacy. Two levels of licenses are available: Pharmacy Technician I, Pharmacy Technician II. Those who should apply at the II level must have passed the national examination by the PTCB or the NHA. In addition, you can also apply for licensure by Endorsement.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Rhode Island

The following are the minimum requirements for application at the Pharmacy Technician I level: ▪ Have satisfied the Board that he or she is of good moral and professional character ▪ Be eighteen (18) years of age or older with the exception of those high school students working in as part of school or community sponsored career exploration programs ▪ Be a high-school graduate or the equivalent, or currently enrolled in a high school or vocational training program that awards such degree or certificate ▪ Not have been convicted of any felony for violations involving controlled substances subject to waiver by the Board upon presentation of satisfactory evidence that such conviction does not impair the ability of the person to conduct with safety to the public the duties of a Pharmacy Technician I. ▪ Be currently enrolled in or successfully completed a Board-approved Pharmacy Technician I training program as defined in §24.19 of these Regulations.

The following are the minimum requirements for application at the Pharmacy Technician II level: ▪ Have satisfied the Board that he or she is of good moral and professional character ▪ Be eighteen (18) years of age or older ▪ Be a high-school graduate or the equivalent ▪ Not have been convicted of any felony for violations involving controlled substances subject to waiver by the Board upon presentation of satisfactory evidence that such conviction does not impair the ability of the person to conduct with safety to the public the duties of a Pharmacy Technician. ▪ Effective 1 January 2012, have successfully passed a nationally-recognized certification examination acceptable to the Board, including, but not limited to, the 70 Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE) or the Institute for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians “ExCPT” examination.

Training Requirements The Board approves training programs that meet one of the following criteria: 1. Pharmacy technician program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) 2. Pharmacy technician program is provided by one of the branches of the military or US Public Health Service 3. Pharmacy technician program is offered by the Board-approved secondary educational school 4. Pharmacy technician program issues a degree or certificate by a university or college that is accredited by a regional accreditation association.

A Pharmacy Technician II who seeks annual licensure renewal shall be required to:

Satisfactorily complete at least ten (10) hours (1 continuing education unit) of continuing education courses, sponsored by a recognized provider, during the current licensing cycle

Complete at least three (3) hours (0.3 continuing education units) of the required ten (10) hours of continuing education as live hours

Maintain documentation of all required continuing education for a period of at least two (2) years from the date the training was completed.

Certification Requirements The state of Rhode Island recognizes national certification from both the NHA and PTCB for pharmacy technicians.

SOUTH CAROLINA The state of South Carolina requires registration as an active SC Pharmacy Technician or SC State-Certified Pharmacy Technician with the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in South Carolina The following are the minimum requirements for registration for State-Certified Pharmacy Technician:

▪ Have a current S.C. Pharmacy Technician Registration ▪ Have passed the National exam for either PTCB or ExCPT. ▪ Complete a pharmacy technician training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) ▪ Affidavit of 1,000 hours of Experience

Training Requirements To be recognized as a certified pharmacy technician in South Carolina, you must have worked under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist for at least 1,000 thousand hours and have completed Board-approved formal training program that issues a degree, certificate or a diploma.

The state requires training from a ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Training certificate or diploma.

Certification Requirements Certification in not required, however the state of South Carolina recognizes national certification from the PTCB or ExCPT for pharmacy technicians.

You must register with the state within 30 days of accepting employment at a South Dakota pharmacy.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in South Dakota The following are the minimum requirements for registration:

▪ Must be employed at a SD pharmacy working for a licensed pharmacist ▪ Be a high school graduate or have attained a GED ▪ Any person who is enrolled in a college or vocational-based technician training program is required to obtain a pharmacy technician-in-training registration prior to beginning on-site practical experience. The length of technician-in-training program may not exceed a period of more than two years.

Direct certification questions to your employer / Pharmacist-In- Charge • Upon certification, technician must provide the BOP with a copy of the certificate issued by certifying agency (i.e. PTCB) • Technician must retain their certification to be employed as a technician in South Dakota • Technician must complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) every other year in order to renew their certification • Technician reports their CE to the agency that certified them. CE should not be reported to the BOP; BOP is not the certifying agency.

TENNESSEE The state of Tennessee requires registration to work as a pharmacy technician with the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy.

TEXAS The state of Texas requires registration to work as a pharmacy technician with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. You may register as a pharmacy technician or a pharmacy technician trainee. You may not work at a Texas pharmacy without having an active registration with the Board.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Texas The following are the minimum requirements to register as a pharmacy technician:

▪ Must become a certified pharmacy technician through PTCB or NHA ▪ Apply for registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy

The following are the minimum requirements to register as a pharmacy technician trainee: ▪ A person designated as a pharmacy technician trainee shall be registered with the board prior to beginning training in a Texas licensed pharmacy. ▪ A person may be designated as a pharmacy technician trainee for no more than two years and the requirements for registration as a pharmacy technician must be completed within the two year period.

What is the difference between a pharmacy technician and a technician trainee?

• A pharmacy technician is an individual who is registered with the Board as a pharmacy technician and whose responsibility in a pharmacy is to provide technical services that do not require professional judgment regarding preparing and distributing drugs and who works under the direct supervision of and is responsible to a pharmacist.

• A pharmacy technician trainee is an individual who is registered with the board as a pharmacy technician trainee and is authorized to participate in a pharmacy’s technician training program.

Individuals employed in a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician or technician trainee must be registered with the Board and have an ACTIVE status. Individuals who do not have an ACTIVE registration (a pending registration does not allow an individual to work as a pharmacy technician or trainee) with TSBP may not be employed as or perform the duties of a pharmacy technician or technician trainee. If found working, the individual, pharmacist, and pharmacy may be subject to disciplinary actions.

Training Requirements All pharmacy technicians are exempt from the CE requirements during their initial registration period. After the initial registration period, pharmacy technicians must complete at least 20 hours of approved continuing education. At least one hour needs to be specific to Texas pharmacy laws and/or regulations. Approved courses are outlined by Board Rule 297.8. Pharmacy technician trainees are not required to obtain CE hours. Pharmacy technicians are required to maintain records of completion of continuing education for three years from the date of reporting the hours on a renewal application. TSBP will randomly audit the records of pharmacy technicians for verification of reported continuing education credit. Note: If you are maintaining your PTCB or NHA pharmacy technician certifications, you may have to meet additional CE requirements as outlined by those respective organizations. UTAH The state of Utah requires a license to work as a pharmacy technician with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Utah The following are the minimum requirements to register as a pharmacy technician trainee:

▪ Must be at least 18 years of age ▪ Must have earned national certification as PTCB or ExCPT Must have completed one of the following: ▪ A Board-approved pharmacy technician program from a licensed pharmacist ▪ A Board-approved a formal educational program ▪ Completion of at least 180 hours of directly supervised practical training in a licensed pharmacy as determined appropriate by a licensed pharmacist in good standing ▪ Has engaged in the practice of a pharmacy technician for a minimum of 1,000 hours in that jurisdiction within the past two years or has equivalent experience as approved by the Division in collaboration with the Board

Training Requirements a pharmacy technician shall complete a training program that is: (a) accredited by ASHP; or (b) conducted by: (i) the National Pharmacy Technician Association; (ii) Pharmacy Technicians University; or (iii) a branch of the Armed Forces of the United States, and (c) meets the following standards: (i) completion of at least 180 hours of directly supervised practical training in a licensed pharmacy as determined appropriate by a licensed pharmacist in good standing; and (ii) written protocols and guidelines for the teaching pharmacist outlining the utilization and supervision of pharmacy technician trainees that address: (A) the specific manner in which supervision will be completed; and (B) an evaluative procedure to verify the accuracy and completeness of all acts, tasks and functions performed by the pharmacy technician trainee. (4) An individual shall complete a pharmacy technician training program and successfully pass the required examination as listed in Subsection R156-17b-303c(4) within two years after obtaining a pharmacy technician trainee license, unless otherwise approved by the Division in collaboration with the Board for good cause showing exceptional circumstances. (a) Unless otherwise approved under Subsection (4), an individual who fails to apply for and obtain a pharmacy technician license within the two-year time frame shall repeat a pharmacy technician training program in its entirety if the individual pursues licensure as a pharmacy technician. (5)(a) Pharmacy technician training programs that received Division approval on or before April 30, 2014 are exempt from satisfying standards established in Subsection R156-17b-303a(3) for students enrolled on or before December 31, 2018. (b) A student in a program described in Subsection (5)(a) shall comply with the program completion deadline and testing requirements in Subsection (4), except that the license application shall be submitted to the Division no later than December 31, 2021. (c) A program in ASHP candidate status shall notify a student prior to enrollment that if the program is denied accreditation status while the student is enrolled in the program, the student will be required to complete education in another program with no assurance of how many credits will transfer to the new program. (d) A program in ASHP candidate status that is denied accreditation shall immediately notify the Division, enrolled students and student practice sites, of the denial. The notice shall instruct each student and practice site that: (i) the program no longer satisfies the pharmacy technician license education requirement in Utah; and (ii) enrollment in a different program meeting requirements established in Subsection R156-17b-303a(3) is necessary for the student to complete training and to satisfy the pharmacy technician license education requirement in Utah. (6) An applicant from another jurisdiction seeking licensure as a pharmacy technician in Utah is deemed to have met the qualifications for licensure in Subsection 58-17b-305(1)(f) and 58-17b-305(1)(g) if the applicant: (a) has engaged in the practice of a pharmacy technician for a minimum of 1,000 hours in that jurisdiction within the past two years or has equivalent experience as approved by the Division in collaboration with the Board; and (b) has passed and maintained current PTCB or ExCPT certification. Certification Requirements As a part of registration, the state of Utah requires pharmacy technicians to be certified as PTCB or ExCPT.

VERMONT The state of Vermont requires a license to work as a pharmacy technician with the Vermont Board of Pharmacy, which is a division within the Office of Professional Regulation.

VIRGINIA To work as a pharmacy technician in the state of Virginia, you must register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.

Training Requirements Virginia requires successful completion from a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program. A list of approved programs can be found here.

In addition to choosing a school that is Board-approved, also check that the program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Provided a person is enrolled in an approved pharmacy technician training program, that person can work as a pharmacy technician for up to nine months while going through the process to become registered. After the nine months, registration is required in order to continue working as a pharmacy technician. Every pharmacy using such a person shall have documentation on site and available for inspection showing that the person is currently enrolled in an approved training program, and the start date for the training. Registered Pharmacy Technicians are required to obtain a minimum of 5 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) per calendar year in order to maintain an active registration. This brochure is intended to help pharmacy technicians to better understand the CPE requirements. The Board of Pharmacy prepared this document as a guide in order to promote compliance with the statutes and regulations concerning CPE.

WEST VIRGINIA

To work as a pharmacy technician in West Virginia, you must register with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.

▪ Must have successfully completed a Board-approved education and training program from either a formal training program or one provided by a pharmacy ▪ Beginning 6/30/2014 must be nationally certified by the PTCB or NHA ▪ Must not be an abuser of alcohol or drugs – per Board discretion if you are in an active recovery program ▪ Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor in relation to pharmacy practice ▪ Must complete a 960 hour pharmacy provided, on-the-job, competency-based education and training program approved by the board; OR ▪ Obtained a national certification as a pharmacy technician and have practiced in another jurisdiction for at least one year

Training Requirements The state of West Virginia requires successful completion from a Board-approved formal pharmacy technician training program or a program administered by a pharmacy.

The following are the minimum requirements to register as a Pharmacy Technician:

▪ Must be at least 18 years or older ▪ Must complete a background check ▪ Must have a high school diploma or equivalent ▪ Must have no felony or misdemeanor conviction related to drugs within a 36-month period prior to registration ▪ Must have no history of drug abuse – or provide proof of recovery ▪ Must be currently certified by the PTCB

The following are the minimum requirements to register as a Pharmacy Technician-in-Training:

A pharmacy technician-in-training shall apply to the Board for a training permit on an application supplied by the Board and shall pay the fee required before starting on-the-job training. This permit shall be valid for two years from the date of original issuance. It shall not be renewed. The sponsoring pharmacy shall be printed on the technician-in-training permit. A change in sponsoring pharmacy requires immediate submission of a transfer form.

Training Requirements

The state of Wyoming requires serving as a technician-in-training prior to fully obtaining your technician status.

All pharmacy techs who wish to renew their license must complete a minimum of 6 hours of continuing education that is Board-approved and certified by one of the following:
