5 MAYOR’S MESSAGE

I congratulate Softball NSW on another outstanding year of competitions, tournaments and events which have seen athletes from grassroots through to the elite take part.

Blacktown is a sporting city and our Council is committed to maintaining first class sporting facilities. The home of Softball NSW at Blacktown International Sportspark is a perfect example of this commitment.

Softball NSW has been an important part of Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney’s history and development as an elite sporting facility.

This season we have been proud to host a variety of high quality events which include the Asia Pacific Cup, won by the team from China.

A new event also hit the Sportspark, with the inaugural Summer Slam series taking place. This exciting game of loaded bases, three innings, shorter fences, and quick changeovers between innings, was won by the Fury, who found their way to grand final victory after finishing fourth in the round robin games.

Congratulations to all of the NSW softball players, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff from Softball NSW on an outstanding 12 months. Let’s make the next 12 months even better!

1 SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (NSW) 2009. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accrual basis and are based on historic costs. They do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with prior periods unless stated otherwise, have been applied in the preparation of these financial statements.

a Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) Non-current assets are depreciated or amortised at rates assessed to match the cost of each of the assets over their effective life.

b Inventories Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value.

c Income Tax The Association is exempt from Income tax in accordance with Section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act of 1987 and Taxation Ruling TR 97-22.

d Auditors Remuneration For Auditing services $6,875 (2018 $6,874)

e Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, applicable any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

f Impairment of Assets At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaIred. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset's fair value less costs to sell and value in use, to the assets carrying amount. Any excess of the asset's carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement.

To enable this we will be looking to boost volunteer numbers to support.

Our main source of warm bodies has been the local Alan Walker - Secretary schools but in the light of new and heavier workloads and the forced alternate priorities, “fringe” sports such as Softball has little hope of getting any oxygen. Also, our two main recruiters, Michael Boller (40 years) and Alan Walker (30 years) have both retired from teaching and our connections have been all but lost.

In a town where the same players are hunted for all sports, Softball loses out every time to the “glamour” sports - , netball, soccer and cricket. Touch and league-tag are also taking many players.

Our recruitment strategy is to continue to provide for regional CHS and PSSA softball at our grounds and hope that some see softball as worth a go.

We have excellent grounds at West End Fields but our council is not putting much support into maintenance and upkeep as the “glamour” field of Glen Willow (rugby league, soccer and netball) gains most attention in the town.

44 Community Engagement We continually promote our sport in the local community and the other sports that play at Stevenson Park. Our sport is part of a community group that looks after our grounds. Sutherland was proud to again be in the Over 35 Grand Final again this year. Unfortunately, we could not pull it off three years in a row, well done to Cumberland on a great win. This is a wonderful competition and the girls love playing the sport and really enjoy the atmosphere at BISP.

50 A special mention and thank you needs to be given to Tess Lynch- Whitton who ran school programs at Manilla Central School and Wallabadah Primary School during Term 1. Tess taught the children basis skills and rules of softball as an introduction. From the feedback we have had from both schools she did a wonderful job with the TAMWORTH skills of the children definitely enhanced. We hope they will continue the program closer to the 2019/20 season Another Softball season has now come and gone and I which will continue the interest and possibly have a would consider it was a success. team or individuals play in our competition. This allowed the players to put their skills into practice in match scenarios against players of similar age group but mostly higher skills level and match hardened.

The game of Softball cannot operate without umpires and we were fortunate to have Ian Hocquard and Theresa Milaor who dedicated their time each week to WAGGA WAGGA umpire our teeball and modball games. Without their dedication we would not have such a successful juniors Competition/Numbers program. Thank you also to our club volunteers who Our Season began on the 13th October 2018. Our attended umpiring duty for the senior’s competition registration numbers were down a little to the previous each week. No doubt attending umpiring duty gave season with our total registrations being 499. This has meant that some U15’s playing B grade have also debuted in A grade this season.

51 WWSA encouraged players to play as many games as Our amenities block that was build in the early 1980’s they were able. Even in the juniors & sub juniors we had by the support of many members & in-kind donations some players playing 2 games every week. will be demolished next week and a terrific new bigger & better amenities block will be put in it’s place over the In my opinion this opportunity for juniors to play coming 4 – 5 months. Grants/Funding/Facilities A very successful year. Early in 2018 we applied for Deanna McNaughton - President several grants in partnership with Wagga Wagga City Council to upgrade several facilities. We are thrilled to say that we were successful in both these grants. Firstly our lights on our main diamond are currently being removed & replaced with new LED light towers that will be brighter, dim-able, and more efficient to run. This will certainly help with the Men’s competition on Monday nights.
