This Handbook contains tables fol' Satara N'orth district, compiled after the 19,')1 Censns of 1ndia. The main results of the 1951 CensHs are em hod ied in the Stftte Tahles published for the States of Bombay, Saurils]Jtl'ii alld Kutch. In this Handhook, the data are exhibited in greatc"r detail. The nnlTlhers given to tables ill this puhlication cones pond to those given in the State CenSrls Report. V I I Transport, VI II Other services and miscellaneous SOllrces, Dependants, whether earning or non.earning, were classified at the census ~,-cording to the principal means of livelihood of the persons on whom they were (kpepd~rt. The Primary Census Abstracts, which contain basic information in respect < >: cv@ry village and town, hi1xe been arranged according to lalukas and petas, 'I;]: 1S into which every district is divided for administrative purposes. The 1'lluka was, hO\\'ever, too small a unit to adopt for preparing the main cens us 1 ! hies. Therefore, in the B, C and D-series of tables figures have beeR given tor 11 act3 and not for talukas and petas. Before sorting the census slips and tabulating lhc results, tracts were formed by combining the rural and urban areas of two or more taluk;ts nr petas. The tracts into which Satara North district was Ji\'ided for this purpose at e shown below:- Rural Tracts (1) Rural areas of Satara and Ka.rad taJukas. (~) Rural areas of Patan and ]aoJi talukas, (3) Rural areas of Koregaon, Khatav, Man, Phaltan and Wai talukas and Khandala and ~lahabaleshwar petas. Urban Tracts (1) Urban area, of Satara and l<.arad talukas. (2) Urban areas of Korcgaon, Khatav, :\1an. 1'haltan and Wai talukas and 'Mahabalcshwar peta. Urban areas comprise the towns shown in table A-V • .. Shorlly before the 1951\ population census, a censu~ of Small Industries \vas taken, and the results of this census are given in the table called "Small ';;calc Industries Census-Employment in Establishments", included in this Handbook. The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home 1 ndustries and small workshops. The larger establishments, that is, power-using ·,tablishments with 10 or more workers and non-power using establishments with '20 or more workers, were excluded from the scope of the enquiry as they now ::11 hmit ret.urns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on their own and not employing other people, except when looms were used.     Version 2.0 Krishna Basin Preface Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS. India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india- wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning, development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by human interventions.

Department of Geography, Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil Mahavidyalaya, Pandharpur- 413304, MS, India. *Corresponding Author: Email- [email protected] Received: January 05, 2012; Accepted: April 09, 2012 Abstract- In this paper the present study reveals the tahsil wise growth of population in Satara district during 1991-2011. The growth of population of Satara district from 2451372 in 1991 to 2808994 during 2011. It has studied on the basis of India reports, Socio-economic Statistical Abstract and Census Handbook. It occupies area of 10,490 sq.km. 15 towns and 1739 villages. Satara is the ‘Historical City’ is currently emerging as the largest educational center of certain cool stations, goods and services. The highest population in Satara district is Karad, Satara and Phaltan tahsils. The secondary data have been collected and computed by recent research techniques and the results have been brought through tables and maps. The total population of the district in rural area is observed 87.11 per cent whereas in urban area it is 12.88 during 1991 and 85.82 per cent rural area, 14.17 per cent urban area in 2001 respectively. It is reported that district is in the growth of urbanization and consequently the rural area of district. The highest growth rate of Mahableshwar tahsil is 35.86 per cent in 1991- 2001 and 22.50 per cent followed by Satara tahsil.
