This Handbook contains tables fol' Satara N'orth district, compiled after the 19,')1 Censns of 1ndia. The main results of the 1951 CensHs are em hod ied in the Stftte Tahles published for the States of Bombay, Saurils]Jtl'ii alld Kutch. In this Handhook, the data are exhibited in greatc"r detail. The nnlTlhers given to tables ill this puhlication cones pond to those given in the State CenSrls Report. The following tabll'~ for the district have, however, not been include,! in this Handhook. :-. A-I~ Variation in popnlation d'lring fift~, years, A-IY TownH clas~ified by population with variations Bill(~e 1901. D-IV Migrants In the E-Summary table, in this Handbook, some columns have -been (Imitted. In the cas~ of the C-spries of tablf's, except C-J, the data were extractf'd 011 tbe basis of a s:lmple count of approximately 10% of the census slips, instead of a full connt of all the ~lips, The C-I table was prepared from a four percent sample of the households recorded in the Natiorul Re~ist('l' of Citizens relating to each town or village. In 1941, the population figures were exhibit,"cl according to commnni.ties in the "Villa'(e Handhooks" published by the Gdvernillent of Bombay. In 1951, the basis of classification at the Censns was cb:mged fr,)m a SClci",1 to an E'conOlnic one, and tile figul"f's for villages given in the Primary Censn" Ahstracts and in lables A-V. B-1, B-II, C-II and E are according to the following pight LivPlihood Classps:- Agricultural Classes Cnlth'ators of land. wbolly or mainly owned; and their dependant"', II Cultivators of land, wholly or mainly nnowned; all~ tht'ir dependants. 1! I Cultivating labourers; and their depenaants. I V Non-cultivating owners of land; agricnltural rent l'C!ceivers; and their dependant~, Non-Agricultural Classes Persons (including dependants) who derive their principal means of liveli hood from;- V Production other than cultivation, V I Commerce. V I I Transport, VI II Other services and miscellaneous SOllrces, Dependants, whether earning or non.earning, were classified at the census ~,-cording to the principal means of livelihood of the persons on whom they were (kpepd~rt. The Primary Census Abstracts, which contain basic information in respect < >: cv@ry village and town, hi1xe been arranged according to lalukas and petas, 'I;]: 1S into which every district is divided for administrative purposes. The 1'lluka was, hO\\'ever, too small a unit to adopt for preparing the main cens us 1 ! hies. Therefore, in the B, C and D-series of tables figures have beeR given tor 11 act3 and not for talukas and petas. Before sorting the census slips and tabulating lhc results, tracts were formed by combining the rural and urban areas of two or more taluk;ts nr petas. The tracts into which Satara North district was Ji\'ided for this purpose at e shown below:- Rural Tracts (1) Rural areas of Satara and Ka.rad taJukas. (~) Rural areas of Patan and ]aoJi talukas, (3) Rural areas of Koregaon, Khatav, Man, Phaltan and Wai talukas and Khandala and ~lahabaleshwar petas. Urban Tracts (1) Urban area, of Satara and l<.arad talukas. (2) Urban areas of Korcgaon, Khatav, :\1an. 1'haltan and Wai talukas and 'Mahabalcshwar peta. Urban areas comprise the towns shown in table A-V • .. Shorlly before the 1951\ population census, a censu~ of Small Industries \vas taken, and the results of this census are given in the table called "Small ';;calc Industries Census-Employment in Establishments", included in this Handbook. The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home 1 ndustries and small workshops. The larger establishments, that is, power-using ·,tablishments with 10 or more workers and non-power using establishments with '20 or more workers, were excluded from the scope of the enquiry as they now ::11 hmit ret.urns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on their own and not employing other people, except when looms were used. Otherwise the concf:pt was of an enquiry which embraced all forms of associate activity where articles were produced, repaired or otherwise treated for sale, use or di'posal. 4: A-I-Area, Houses DIS'l~ICT I~- Occupied Houses Area in Taluka or Pet. square Villages Towns miles lotal Rural Urban 2 3 4 5 6 7 -------- Total 4,022.6 1.152 15 203.177 179,377 23,800 Jaoli 344.7 106 12,738 12,738 2 Karad 405.8 111 3 32,724 28,90~ 3,820 3 Khandala 203.3 45 9,114 9,1l4 4 Khatav 509.1 1S4 2 22,697 20,397 2,300 5 Koregaon 364.6 73 3 18,583 .14,744 3,839 6 Mahabaleshwar 87.3 53 2 3,203 2,133 1 ,(\7 0 7 Man 556.0 70 15,291 13,598 1,693 8 Patan 513.5 203 28,325 28,325 9 Phaltan 455.8 78 17,444 15,352 2,092 10 Satara 353.4 151 2 27,849 21,440 6,409 11 Wai 229.1 88 15,209 12,632 2,577 Note:-I. Version 2.0 Krishna Basin Preface Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS. India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india- wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning, development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by human interventions.
