Vanessa Thorpe, 'Steve Mcqueen Paves Way for Artists to Break The
Vanessa Thorpe, ‘Steve McQueen paves way for artists to break the boundaries’, The Observer, March 8, 2014 The Oscar-winning director of 12 Years a Slave has pushed back the boundaries of film because of the fearlessness that comes with a background in art Steve McQueen with his Oscar after winning best picture award for 12 Years a Slave. Photograph: Xinhua/Landov /Barcroft Media When the director Steve McQueen was an art student learning basic film-making skills at Goldsmiths College, London, he joked he was already aiming for the time when his name would eclipse that of his glamorous namesake, star of The Great Escape and Bullitt. "One day," he told his collaborator, Professor Will Brooker, "when people talk about Steve McQueen, I am going to be the first person they think of." Now, with an Oscar for his film 12 Years a Slave, the transition from Turner prizewinning artist to celebrated director has been made in style. It is a path to cinematography also taken by the British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for a Turner prize in 1998 and now editing her high-profile film of the erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. Next month will see a further reminder of the link between the film industry and the rarefied contemporary art world, a link that has existed since the Lumière brothers first projected images on to a screen. Julian Schnabel, the American artist and film-maker, is to stage his first art exhibition in Britain for 15 years. "The connection between visual artists and film might seem obvious, and Schnabel is successful in both, but it is amazing how many good artists there are who have not made good films," said Tim Marlow, who was appointed head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts last week. -

JOHN LENNON: A MAN AND ARTIST UNFULFIILLED? Słowa kluczowe: kompleks, trauma, dominacja, „krzyk pierwotny”, gwiaz- dorstwo, artyzm, niespełnienie Summary: In this essay, the author attempts at a synthetic insight into the biography of John Lennon, both as a confused genius of popular music and a victim of the childhood complex of motherly neglect: later transformed into the one of female domination and transferred onto Yoko Ono, his second wife and avant-garde “muse.” Consequently, their marriage, largely idealized by media, is shown here in the context of Lennon’s relations with other women (mainly his mother and aunt Mimi), his contradictory psychological traits and artistic/ ideological evolution that resulted in being torn between pop superstardom, avant-garde artistry and, in last five years, virtual creative impotence. -

Synopsis Directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, Nowhere Boy is a film about the life and growing up pains of a rather young rebellious dreamer called John Lennon. Set in Liverpool, the film begins in the mid-1950s, when John is a brash 15 year old schoolboy, always getting into trouble. The film ends two years later with him going to Hamburg, accompanied by his newly-formed band, The Beatles (interestingly, not mentioned in the film). Within these two years, John goes through a remarkable change. A change shaped largely by the two most important people in John’s life: both, women of extraordinary strength. -

At last, the truth of THE COVE comes to the fore in an act of covert filmmaking that turns a documentary into a gripping action-adventure thriller . and a heart-pounding call for help from the world’s oceans. THE COVE begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was O’Barry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the international television sensation “Flipper.” But his close relationship with those dolphins – the very dolphins who sparked a global fascination with trained sea mammals that continues to this day -- led O’Barry to a radical change of heart. -

It’s probably no surprise that respondents thought the trend would be toward electronic formats. But for a variety of reasons, paper books refuse to die a quiet death. Overall, almost two out of three (63%) respondents claimed that paper books would never disappear.”... Lennon Naked, Airing on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY, Sunday, November 21 at 9Pm ET on PBS (Check Local Listings)
In 1967 the Beatles were at the top of the world. John Lennon was at the bottom of his. OnLennon MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY Naked Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 9pm ET on PBS The fabled, turbulent career of John Lennon comes to life in a highly-praised performance by Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), portraying the tormented superstar from the height of his Beatle fame to his romance with Yoko Ono and the breakup of the band, on Lennon Naked, airing on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY, Sunday, November 21 at 9pm ET on PBS (check local listings). The 90-minute drama recreates key scenes in Lennon’s life from 1964 to 1971, with flashbacks to a turning point in his childhood when his separated parents forced him to choose between them. In a moment of indecision, he tragically got neither. During its UK broadcast, the Daily Telegraph applauded Lennon Naked as “the most ambitious Lennon drama to date,” extolling Eccleston for his “sheer brio” in channeling “a tragic anti-hero more complicated than Hamlet.” The Beatles’ hometown Liverpool Daily Echo praised the film as “frivolous, funny, passionate, and emotionally powerful—just like the man himself.” And the Sunday Express hailed Eccleston for his “convincing and nuanced performance of the late, great Beatle.” Commemorating the 30th anniversary of Lennon’s death, and the year that he would have turned 70, the film is followed on PBS by an American Masters special, LENNONYC, airing Monday, November 22 at 9pm ET. Taking John and Yoko to the eve of their self-imposed expatriation to New York in 1971, Lennon Naked costars Naoko Mori (Torchwood) as Yoko and Christopher Fairbank (Tess of the D’Urbervilles) as Freddie Lennon, John’s absentee dad, who abandoned his young son and then showed up 17 years later in a tabloid-inspired reunion that developed into a relationship—of sorts. -
