Vanessa Thorpe, 'Steve Mcqueen Paves Way for Artists to Break The
Vanessa Thorpe, ‘Steve McQueen paves way for artists to break the boundaries’, The Observer, March 8, 2014 The Oscar-winning director of 12 Years a Slave has pushed back the boundaries of film because of the fearlessness that comes with a background in art Steve McQueen with his Oscar after winning best picture award for 12 Years a Slave. Photograph: Xinhua/Landov /Barcroft Media When the director Steve McQueen was an art student learning basic film-making skills at Goldsmiths College, London, he joked he was already aiming for the time when his name would eclipse that of his glamorous namesake, star of The Great Escape and Bullitt. "One day," he told his collaborator, Professor Will Brooker, "when people talk about Steve McQueen, I am going to be the first person they think of." Now, with an Oscar for his film 12 Years a Slave, the transition from Turner prizewinning artist to celebrated director has been made in style. It is a path to cinematography also taken by the British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for a Turner prize in 1998 and now editing her high-profile film of the erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. Next month will see a further reminder of the link between the film industry and the rarefied contemporary art world, a link that has existed since the Lumière brothers first projected images on to a screen. Julian Schnabel, the American artist and film-maker, is to stage his first art exhibition in Britain for 15 years. "The connection between visual artists and film might seem obvious, and Schnabel is successful in both, but it is amazing how many good artists there are who have not made good films," said Tim Marlow, who was appointed head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts last week. -

The Effect of the Beatles on Society
The Effect of the Beatles on Society Written by: Larry Coffey Date: 26 March 1981 The Effect of the Beatles on Society In June of 1956, John Lennon met Paul McCartney for the first time. Nobody ever dreamed that John and Paul would have the success that they had. John Lennon and Paul McCartney along with George Harrison and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr) became known as the greatest and the most influential rock musicians in the world. The Beatles, whose music has been played by prestigious symphonies around the world and has been sung by renowned singers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, were a vibrant moving force of the 1960’s; they permanently changed the course of music and soundly influenced the lives of future generations. To get an idea of how much the Beatles helped shape the following generations’ lifestyles, one must look at the lifestyle and the music before the Beatles. The music the Beatles played, “Rock and Roll,” had already established itself as a popular form of music to American teenagers. Derived from the black’s “Rhythm and Blues,” rock and roll was made popular by performers such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Bill Haley. Though rock and roll had been around for about ten years before the Beatles became famous, it was still a relatively new form of music that had plenty of potential. The Beatles were elevated from obscurity by utilizing the music’s potential. The lifestyle of the fifties was slowly changing. The American public was beginning to accept the possibility of a “working class hero”. -
MTO 11.4: Spicer, Review of the Beatles As Musicians
Volume 11, Number 4, October 2005 Copyright © 2005 Society for Music Theory Mark Spicer Received October 2005 [1] As I thought about how best to begin this review, an article by David Fricke in the latest issue of Rolling Stone caught my attention.(1) Entitled “Beatles Maniacs,” the article tells the tale of the Fab Faux, a New York-based Beatles tribute group— founded in 1998 by Will Lee (longtime bassist for Paul Schaffer’s CBS Orchestra on the Late Show With David Letterman)—that has quickly risen to become “the most-accomplished band in the Beatles-cover business.” By painstakingly learning their respective parts note-by-note from the original studio recordings, the Fab Faux to date have mastered and performed live “160 of the 211 songs in the official canon.”(2) Lee likens his group’s approach to performing the Beatles to “the way classical musicians start a chamber orchestra to play Mozart . as perfectly as we can.” As the Faux’s drummer Rich Pagano puts it, “[t]his is the greatest music ever written, and we’re such freaks for it.” [2] It’s been over thirty-five years since the real Fab Four called it quits, and the group is now down to two surviving members, yet somehow the Beatles remain as popular as ever. Hardly a month goes by, it seems, without something new and Beatle-related appearing in the mass media to remind us of just how important this group has been, and continues to be, in shaping our postmodern world. For example, as I write this, the current issue of TV Guide (August 14–20, 2005) is a “special tribute” issue commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Beatles’ sold-out performance at New York’s Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965—a concert which, as the magazine notes, marked the “dawning of a new era for rock music” where “[v]ast outdoor shows would become the superstar standard.”(3) The cover of my copy—one of four covers for this week’s issue, each featuring a different Beatle—boasts a photograph of Paul McCartney onstage at the Shea concert, his famous Höfner “violin” bass gripped in one hand as he waves to the crowd with the other. -

Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “This town – it’s all secrets. Everyone knows something you don’t” 1 The Town is a three-part contemporary drama from Big Talk Productions starring BAFTA winner Andrew Scott alongside an outstanding ensemble cast including Julia McKenzie, Charlotte Riley, Gerard Kearns, Kelly Adams and Martin Clunes. The first television series by Laurence Olivier award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett, The Town follows a shocking incident within an otherwise normal family. Mark Nicholas (Scott) returns to the town where he grew up to find his grandmother Betty (McKenzie) is now living in his childhood bedroom and he barely knows his teenage sister Jodie (Avigail Tlalim). Mark is drawn back into the life he left behind. Hardest of all is meeting his first love Alice (Riley), now married with a child. Thrust into the complicated lives of his former neighbours, it’s not surprising there are awkward moments as Mark becomes reacquainted with his past, including his old friends ‘down the pub’ Lucy (Kelly Adams), Carly (Aisling Bea) and Jeff (Sam Troughton). Running parallel with Mark’s story, we get to know the town Mayor, alcohol-soaked Len (Clunes). With his world falling in around him, Len is stumbling from one PR disaster to another. As we get to know the community, we’re also introduced to the enigmatic Inspector Franks (Douglas Hodge) from the local police force whose links to the family are stronger than it first appears... Mark struggles to decide whether he should stay permanently to be with his family. But a new life is difficult to build in the place you used to call home and now feels like you barely know it. -

A work sheet with planned activities is also attached. Synopsis Directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, Nowhere Boy is a film about the life and growing up pains of a rather young rebellious dreamer called John Lennon. Set in Liverpool, the film begins in the mid-1950s, when John is a brash 15 year old schoolboy, always getting into trouble. The film ends two years later with him going to Hamburg, accompanied by his newly-formed band, The Beatles (interestingly, not mentioned in the film). Within these two years, John goes through a remarkable change. A change shaped largely by the two most important people in John’s life: both, women of extraordinary strength.
