Generalisations are always dangerous but I see the tireless Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence efforts of our growers to try and improve their wine. First, they are determined to get the best of their terroir: the fact that so many are now organically certified or in the formal process of converting to organic cultivation testifies to their care for their The following mixed cases include two bottles of each of the six land. Likewise improvements in involve moving wines listed, with a discount of at least 10% towards minimal intervention, plus a reduced use of barrels. We have several fantastic totally unoaked wines listed here; if BS216 Southern Sampler £88.00 oak is used, it is mainly in the form of old barrels, just to round (Three whites and three reds) the fruit; and growers tend to use less new oak for their top wines 2015 Preignes Le Vieux, Reserve Blanc, than in the past. Laurence Desblaches, Domaine de la Ribotte 5 Languedoc and Roussillon: the appellations

This area, stretching from the Causses du Larzac, North of Montpellier to the end of the Pyrenees near the Spanish border is undoubtedly the most dynamic wine region in France. A mixture of affordable land, great terroirs and fi ne weather has attracted a plethora of winemakers from all around France and overseas. In this splendid hunting ground for SVS we follow our Languedoc rule: we seek great wines without a big price tag. Most wines here are under Languedoc AOC (being gradually replaced by AOP), with or without a specifi c terroir attached to it (i.e.; Languedoc-Montpeyroux); while some of those specifi c terroirs are pushing to get their own AOP status. Wines from Languedoc-La Clape, the most recent to achieve this stature, will be labelled La Clape AOP from the 2015 vintage.

Mas des Brousses, Puéchabon, Terrasses du Larzac Brousses translates as bush, or brush; this is, literally, the farm in the brush. Amidst the rolling scrub-covered hills around Puéchabon and the pebble-strewn terrasses near the Hérault river lie the domaine’s plots of vines. Tall Géraldine Combes (from a family who have inhabited Puéchabon, near Gignac, since 1525) juggles looking after three boys with tending the vines. Husband Xavier Peyraud, grandson of the legendary Lucien Peyraud of Domaine Tempier, is the winemaker. What stands them apart from other Estates in the Terrasse du Larzac is the high proportion of Mourvèdre coming from Xavier’s ties with Bandol. Their wines are not certifi ed, but they have been organic in practice for years.

Damien Coste, Domaine Belles Pierres

Domaine Belles Pierres, Murviel les Montpellier, St. Georges d’Orques Damien Coste and his father created Belles Pierres (literally “beautiful stones”) in the hill-top village of St-Murviel, near St. Georges d’Orques, in 1992, having taken their land out of the local co-operative. Here the grape skins take on the evanescent oils of the surrounding fl owers and herbs - lavender, oregano, rosemary, thyme and bay - giving fascinating Mediterranean nuances to the wines. You only Géraldine Combes et Xavier Peyraud, Mas des Brousses have to smell these wines to be transported there. 2014 Chasseur des Brousses, 2013 Languedoc, Les Clauzes de Jo Blanc, 14% IGP Pays d’Oc, 13% Bottle £12.50 Case £142.50 Code BEL613 Bottle £10.50 Case £119.70 Code MAB114 From 60% with equal proportions of Viognier and Grenache, in old barrels. 6 Mas d’Amile, Montpeyroux The fi rst vintage of Montpeyroux produced by Amélie d’Hurlaborde and her brother Sébastien Carceller took the UK market by storm last July as it was recommended by Jane MacQuitty in The Times Top 50 Summer Reds. Amélie is still running the domaine while overseeing the building of their new house and cellar. Sébastien is making the wine in his grandfather’s garage, although he has retained his day job of supporting Alain Chabanon nearby, at one of the highest rated and most expensive estates in the Languedoc. He has no plans to leave: “I am learning too much with Alain”. I felt that their wines were even better than last year, more polished. They are clearly making the most of this Rémi Duchemin, Plan de l’Homme stunning terroir. The vineyards at Montpeyroux face south and are protected Plan de l’Homme, NEW by the Causse du Larzac and Mont Baudile (850m) to the north and the hills of St Guilhem-le-Désert to the east. The Saint Jean de la Blaquière, cooling wind coming from the Causse du Larzac brings Terrasses du Larzac dramatic temperature variation between night and day, allowing full ripeness while retaining freshness and acidity. Rémi Duchemin is not unknown to our long-term Montpeyroux is widely expected to become an AOP in the customers. We use to ship the wines he made at Mas de next few years, so highly regarded is the area. Mortiès, the estate he created in Pic St. Loup, until it was sold in 2008. His plan to take some time off to refl ect and consider working in another region came to an end when the Plan de l’Om came up for sale. Rémi could not resist the opportunity to work this vineyard at 250m of altitude in the foothills of the Terrasses du Larzac. Here the climate is more continental than in the rest of the Languedoc; the summer nights are fresh and the winter ones freezing. The soils are poor, draining and heterogeneous. Here schist, sandstone and the red coloured and mineral rich “Ruffe” all bring their different complexity to the wines, while an average age of 50 years for the red vines and 25 for the Roussane ensures low yields. is done by hand, the wines are wild fermented and all are organically certifi ed. 7 Domaine du Météore, , Faugères Geneviève and Guy Coste-Libes run this long-held, family owned estate in the village of Cabrerolles in the north of the Faugères appellation. It’s named after the huge crater of a meteor which punctures the vineyards; and most of the wines are named after meteor showers. Two local factors mark all the wines: fi rst all the family’s 23 hectares of vines are on schistous soils - and that gives the wines a particular high-toned scent and exciting minerality; and second, the vineyards go up to 350 metres in altitude, and that, Paul et Line Maury, combined with cool downdrafts from the plateau to the La Combe Saint Paul north, brings freshness to their wines. 9 Domaine du Grand Arc, Cucugnan, Corbières Bruno Schenk’s vines are on classic argilo-calcaire soils, with some sandstone, in the wild hills between Cucugnan and Padern, overlooked by the amazing hill-top Cathar castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. It’s surprisingly cool here in these vineyards - Bruno was told when he arrived from Alsace in 1995 that the land was only good for white and rosé - and this gives great fi nesse and freshness to all the wines. Bruno is now in conversion to organic viticulture. He also makes wine with natural yeasts and without using any sulphur at all until bottling, so he qualifi es as a “natural” winemaker. He attributes the deep colours of his reds to this practice. It’s worth noting that Bruno’s reds keep really well – even the Reserve Grand Arc will be drinking beautifully six years after the vintage.

10 Domaine Depeyre, Cases-de-Pène Serge Depeyre, from a Rhône wine-making family, and Brigitte Bile, from Cases de Pène, met at the wine-making college in Avignon in 1995. Together they returned to her birthplace, started the purchase of their own vineyards with 4 hectares in 1997, opened their small cellar in Cases-de- Pène in 2000, and produced their fi rst wine in 2002. Serge’s day job is working as Régisseur, effectively estate manager and overseer in charge of Clos des Fées (one of the most highly rated and hugely expensive Roussillon estates) at Vingrau, and their own little domaine has grown to 12 hectares, largely looked after by Brigitte. Hearing them, one senses how hard it is to be a grower among these arid, wind- blasted hills: they need a pick-axe in order to plant a vine; they plough using a mule; and yields are ludicrously low.

JF Deu, Domaine du Traginer

Domaine du Traginer, Banyuls-sur-Mer Jean-François is a passionate vigneron, a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture and his eight hectares of bush vines are undoubtedly some of the most dramatic and beautiful in France, on steep slopes plunging straight in the Mediterranean. Yields are extremely low - a miserable 17-20 hectolitres per hectare - and all tending of the vines has to be done by hand. Indeed part of his vineyard is still ploughed solely with a mule as the name of the domaine Serge Depeyre and Brigitte Bile, Domaine Depeyre indicates - Traginer means muleteer in Catalan in homage to Jean François’s uncle Anicet, the last and most famous muleteer in Banyuls. 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Rouge, 14.5% We have shipped two deep, powerful dry red wines Bottle £12.95 Case £147.63 Code DEP113 from the AOC, and two fortifi ed Banyuls, the From about 50% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 25% Carignan, appellation responsible for some of the fi nest and most grown on black schist vineyards near the village of Cases-de- complex Vins Doux Naturels in France.
