And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

  • Timeless Master to Win the Targa Florio You Need an Extremely Sensitive Foot on the Accelerator
newsroom History Nov 13, 2018 Timeless Master To win the Targa Florio you need an extremely sensitive foot on the accelerator. Many drivers swear by the creations of shoemaker Francesco “Ciccio” Liberto, who has been making footwear for race-car drivers for more than fifty years. We drop in on the master—together with Gijs van Lennep, winner of the last great Targa Florio. Of course he still knows every last curve throughout the Madonie mountain range of Sicily, from the extended bends to the spine- chilling hairpins. On the road to Cerda, about an hour southeast of Palermo, Gijs van Lennep steps on the gas. His destination is a small shop on the edge of the historical center of Cefalù, a town said to be one of the most beautiful in all of Italy—più belli d‘Italia. At the moment, however, van Lennep only has eyes for the road stretching before him. “In many places they didn’t even have guardrails,” he recalls while steering the Porsche 718 Cayman vigorously into the next sharp, blind curve. Hundreds of thousands of spectators used to line the course of the Targa Florio, the infamous endurance race through Sicily’s mountainous countryside. Van Lennep’s memories of the wildly gesticulating fans he raced by are still as fresh as ever. That was a while ago—forty-five years, to be exact—and he’s now seventy-six. Van Lennep and Herbert Müller won the last Targa Florio as a world championship race in 1973, driving a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. Eleven laps of seventy-two kilometers each.

  • Garage Treasure the Porsche 908.022 Completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 As a Camera Car for Steve Mcqueen’S Film Epic
newsroom History Mar 20, 2019 Garage treasure The Porsche 908.022 completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 as a camera car for Steve McQueen’s film epic. Today, it is back in the same condition it was when the actor used it in races himself. There are movies that become part of our collective consciousness from the day they are released. However, Steve Mcqueen’s “Le Mans” was anything but a blockbuster when it was released, and has had a very special journey. It was brought back to life by the Zeitgeist after lying dormant for over 40 years. There is no doubt about it: In the year 2018, “Le Mans” is more of a cult classic than ever before. Two full-length documentaries cover the making of the film down to the finest details. Literature about the stripes and McQueen as the tireless engine behind it has spread like wildfire. McQueen’s expressive face – which was already brought back to life virtually in an advert for the Ford Puma in 1998 – is suddenly everywhere. And this time, as if the man was indeed still among us. The vehicle fleet that was used back then for the film appeared largely protected from the ravages of time and instead ennobled by the passing of decades. However, sometimes looks can be deceiving, as was the case for the Ferrari 512 S (chassis 1026), which is now a showpiece in the collection of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. Driven by Derek Bell, the car caught fire during filming and was reduced to its foundations, resulting in it being practically rebuilt around its chassis number.

  • The Essence of Porsche the 908/03 Distils All of the Zuffenhausen Factory’S Cornering Expertise in a Single Racing Car
newsroom History Aug 14, 2017 The essence of Porsche The 908/03 distils all of the Zuffenhausen factory’s cornering expertise in a single racing car. Racing drivers have nerves of steel and a natural confidence. However, in 1969, the nerves and confidence of Porsche’s factory drivers were tested to their limits. They had the 917 which, with its new 12-cylinder, 600 hp engine, was more powerful than any Porsche that had come before it. Thanks to its streamlined body, the car was faster, too – but without downforce, this beast was virtually impossible to tame. Enter the 908/03, the hero of our story: a small, fast prototype developed by project manager Manfred Bantle on the basis of his 1968 909 hillclimber. The secret to the “mark three” was positioning the differential behind the transmission, as in the 909, forcing the gearbox, engine and driver’s seat further forwards. The axle load was split in a ratio of 45:55 front to rear, which was a much more even split than could be achieved in the previous year’s 908 or in the 917. Not that there was much weight to split: Head of development Ferdinand Piëch was merciless in his efforts to shave off the grams. The plan to defend the title in the 1970 World Sportscar Championship involved a two-pronged attack: Deploying the 917 on the fast circuits and the 908/03 on the corner-heavy tracks, the Targa Florio in Sicily and the 1,000 kilometre race at the Nürburgring. But there was a flaw in the plan: “The drivers weren’t happy.
