The car has been dismantled completely, from the body shell to the smallest screws, then photographed piece by piece in a specific position to obtain the illusion of an exploding car. The result is designed to look like it was a moment captured by a single shot from a camera, but it took months to create the image. “These are possibly the ‘slowest high-speed’ images ever captured,” Oefner told The Creators Project platform. “It took almost two months to create an image that looks as if it was captured in a fraction of a second. The whole disassembly in itself took more than a day for each car due to the complexity of the models.” This shot of the famous GT40 is one of five that Oefner took for this series. The full list includes a Bugatti 57 SC (1936), Auto Union Type C (1936-1937), Maserati 250F (1957), Ford GT40 (1969) and a Porsche 956 (1982). 12 AUTO / ISSUE #15 FANTASTIC FORD The GT40 was the car that ended Ferrari’s dominance at the Le Mans 24 Hours, as recounted in Paths to Glory, p56. The American-British car scored four straight wins in the classic endurance race from 1966-69, including a 1-2-3 finish led by Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren in ‘66. 13 AUTO / ISSUE #15 Truck racing MOVING ON UP The FIA European Truck Racing Championship was back with a bang in May with the first round of the 2016 season taking place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. This is a momentous year for the championship following the appointment of a series promoter by the FIA for the next five years. ETRA Promotions plans to build on the already strong foundations of the series, which boasts race attendance second only to Formula One on the circuits of Europe. ETRA is implementing a solid strategy and investment plan to further increase media exposure and wider public awareness of this spectacular branch of the sport. It has recruited experts from various areas of motor sport and truck racing to develop the championship brand, attract new series partners, gain more media coverage in motor sport and lifestyle media, as well as the truck specialist press, and work on increasing television distribution.

But this time something is different, even though Bugatti and motorsports have been inseparable for ten years. Nevertheless, 1929 marks a special year for Bugatti. This is the year the French manufacturer wins the first Grand Prix in Monaco. After almost four hours, the racing driver William "Williams" Charles Frederick Grover is the first one to cross the finish line in a Bugatti Type 35 B at the Grand Prix Monaco – the start of a new era. Today, with its tight city circuit, the Monaco GP is the highlight of any Formula1 season, and is one of the most famous car races in the world alongside the 500 miles in Indianapolis and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Everything started very small 90 years ago. The idea of beginning a race in the middle of Monaco came in the mid-1920s when Monaco's General Commissioner for the Monaco Automobile Club, Anthony Noghès, arrived. But it took a few years for his idea to be put into action. At the beginning of April 1929, 20 drivers registered and 16 actually started on 14th of April 1929. Eight drivers relied on models from Bugatti, such as the Type 35 C and Type 35 B, the latter being the choice of William Charles Frederick Grover.

In detail, 11 are the successes achieved by Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team), winner of Drivers World Championship, 5 the ones reached by Nico Rosberg (Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team) and 3 are Daniel Ricciardo’s victories (Red Bull Racing). Involved in Formula One since 1975, Brembo has reached a total of 20 World Championship Drivers’ titles and 25 World Championship Constructors’ titles divided in this way: 14 with Scuderia Ferrari, 4 with Red Bull Racing, 3 with McLaren Honda, 2 with Benetton Renault, 1 with Brawn GP and 1 with Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.
