The news WOMEN AND MEN in particular has an important role in how notions of power are distributed in the society. This report presents study findings on how women and men are represented in the news in the Nordic countries, and to what extent women and IN THE NEWS men occupy the decision-making positions in the media.     POWER, COMMUNICATION, AND POLITICS IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES POWER, COMMUNICATION, POWER, COMMUNICATION, AND POLITICS IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES The Nordic countries are stable democracies with solid infrastructures for political dia- logue and negotiations. However, both the “Nordic model” and Nordic media systems are under pressure as the conditions for political communication change – not least due to weakened political parties and the widespread use of digital communication media. In this anthology, the similarities and differences in political communication across the Nordic countries are studied. Traditional corporatist mechanisms in the Nordic countries are increasingly challenged by professionals, such as lobbyists, a development that has consequences for the processes and forms of political communication. Populist polit- ical parties have increased their media presence and political influence, whereas the news media have lost readers, viewers, listeners, and advertisers. In this kind of Karlstad University, Sweden situation, it is assumed that people emphasise their affinity with the affected country. This, in turn, makes the problematisation of the affinities displayed particularly interesting since the act of expressing them even in a very taxing situation indicates their importance. Texts by individuals from ethnic minorities, written soon after the attacks, are analysed in terms of conceptions of ‘Norwegianness’. It addresses the following two interrelated research questions. How do the topics of public debate, where the concepts of degrowth and green growth are used, connect and overlap? In these connections and overlaps, how do the two concepts relate to each other? We read all the articles published in Norway on ten newspapers and magazines, which have mentioned “degrowth” or “green growth” since January 2018, to identify recurring interpretations of the two concepts and related social and political dilemmas. Then, we isolate elements in the articles, which may represent sources of discord and misunderstanding, and synthesize them into “core” topics, to provide a simplified basis for future debates. Using a series of hypotheses, the analysis uses Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling to ascertain to what extent local journalism meets community information needs through infrastructure, output and performance. The analysis finds that the size of the publisher and the size of the community covered matter more for hard news coverage than regulatory factors. To that end, the results indicate that the Norwegian local media system is somehow shaped by the geography of the political landscape. The results and their contributions are discussed in light of media systems theory and local journalism structures. In fact, media systems theory suggests that media models are rooted in the political and economic fabric of a society. Journalism, as such, is in a ‘close relationship to the political world’ (Hallin & Mancini, 2004: 13). While media systems theory assumes that this is the case at the level of the nation state, few attempts have been made to analyse this system connection within the nation state – such as the relationship between the local political decision-making level and local news media (for notable exceptions, see Powers et al., 2015; Wadbring & Bergström, 2017).

    Foundation becomes new owner of Amedia A newly established foundation will become the new owner of Amedia in order to secure long term and stable ownership of Norwegian local newspapers. The agreement signed today entails the new foundation taking over 100 per cent of the Amedia shares from Telenor, LO and Fritt Ord. The formal acquisition is expected to take place in April. (Photo: Amedia) Sparebankstiftelsen DNB has established this new foundation to finance the purchase of Amedia. Sparebankstiftelsen DNB is an independent foundation that utilizes its profits for philanthropic purposes. The sale values Amedia at NOK 1.4 billion. After deductions for debt and debt -related items the purchase price for the shares is NOK395 million. The new foundation will keep Amedia as a one corporation and will secure the company’s independence and editorial freedom. Amedia is Norway’s largest publisher of local media and has extensive distribution activities in Norway and large printing trades in Norway and Russia, in addition to pure digital businesses. The corporation reaches close to 1.7 million readers every day both digitally and on paper through the group’s 62 subscription newspapers. The corporation has about 2400 employees and had revenues of NO 4.2 billion in 2015. Telenor Group first acquired a stake in Amedia in 2000, and holds 44.2 percent of the shares.
