Total Bases Game (Game It) www.bigalbaseball.com/tdc TOTAL BASES GAME (GAME IT) Purpose: Once your 7-8 yr old team has had the chance to walk through and practice the basic defensive plays, play this game to practice hitting, running the bases and defense at game-like speed. Set - up: • You can either use the min-diamond approach with shorter bases or use the regulation sized diamond. • You could use Bubba Bat and soft hit baseballs or you could use regulation balls and bats. • Divide your team into 4 equally talented hitting teams. (For example; if you have 12 players create 4 teams of 3 players. If you have 11 players create 3 teams of 3 players and 1 team of 2 players.) • 3 teams take the field and fill all of the defensive positions like they would in a ball game. Play the game with the same local league rules you will be using during the season. (for example: your league may not have a catcher position for Tee Ball, if this is the case don’t assign a catcher in the Total Bases Game) • The 3 players on the 4th team of 3 players put on helmets and get ready to hit. • The coach pitches to each team (sitting on a bucket behind an L-screen 21-25 feet from the hitters) • This approach will create lots of hits and chances for the defense to practice all of the game situations Rules: • Each team, when it is their turn to hit, gets a total of 6 official at bats (ie. if there are 3 players on a team, each player gets 2 official at bats and if there are only 2 players on a team each player gets 3 official at bats.) • Each time a player gets to any base safely it counts as 1 point. o A single is worth 1 point, a double 2 points, a triple 3 points and a home run 4 points. o A player advancing from 1st to 2nd is 1 point and a player advancing from 2nd to home is 2 points etc. • If a player hits a double he gets 2 points, and he stays on 2nd base just like a ball game and gives his teammate at the plate a chance to hit him around. • If the next hitter gets a single and gets to first base he gets a point for his team and on the same play, if the runner that was on 2nd base scores on the base hit he earns another 2 points for his team. • If a player flies out, grounds out or strikes out he gets 0 points for his team. www.bigalbaseball.com/tdc TOTAL BASES GAME (GAME IT) • If a player hits a single but gets thrown out trying to turn it into a double he only gets 1 point for getting to 1st safely. • If the defensive players make errors, drop fly balls, over throw bases, don’t hustle to cover behind team mates, or throw the ball to the wrong bases the hitting team will earn a lot of points by getting on base and then advancing around the bases to score. • Once the 4 teams each have had 6 officials at bats, the winning team is the one that earned the most points. Outcome: When the 3 teams are on defense the goal is to limit the total number of bases the hitting team can generate. This is a great way to cause everyone in the field to work together and to focus on executing on the defensive plays. When a team is on offence, the goal is to accumulate as many points (total bases) as possible using their 6 official bats. This is a great way to get your players to focus on hitting, advancing base runners and driving in runs..

Many attend few understand.” ~ Leo Durocher Durocher, a 17-year major league vet and Hall of Fame manager, sums up the game of baseball quite brilliantly in the above quote, and it’s pretty ridiculous how much fans really don’t understand about the game of baseball that they watch so much. This holds especially true when you start talking about baseball stats. Sure, most people can tell you what a home run is and that batting average is important, but once you get past the basic stats, the rest is really uncharted territory for most fans. But fear not! This is your crash course in advanced baseball stats, explained in plain English, so that even the most rudimentary of fans can become knowledgeable in the mysterious world of baseball analytics, or sabermetrics as it is called in the industry. Because there are so many different stats that can be covered, I’m just going to touch on the hitting stats in this article and we can save the pitching ones for another piece. So without further ado – baseball stats! The Slash Line The baseball “slash line” typically looks like three different numbers rounded to the thousandth decimal place that are separated by forward slashes (hence the name). We’ll use Mike Trout‘s 2014 slash line as an example; this is what a typical slash line looks like: .287/.377/.561 The first of those numbers represents batting average. While most fans know about this stat, I’ll touch on it briefly just to make sure that I have all of my bases covered (baseball pun intended).

Sanford University of Minnesota Duluth Honors Capstone Project 2 Abstract Major League Baseball has different statistics for hitters, fielders, and pitchers. The game has followed the same rules for over a century and this has allowed for statistical comparison. As technology grows, so does the game of baseball as there is more areas of the game that people can monitor and track including pitch speed, spin rates, launch angle, exit velocity and directional break. The website QOPBaseball.com is a newer website that attempts to correctly track every pitches horizontal and vertical break and grade it based on these factors (Wilson, 2016). Fangraphs has statistics on the direction players hit the ball and what percentage of the time. The game of baseball is all about quantifying players and being able give a value to their contributions. Sabermetrics have given us the ability to do this in far more depth. Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) is an offensive stat which is attempted to quantify a player’s total offensive value (wRC and wRC+, Fangraphs). It is Era and park adjusted, meaning that the park and year can be compared without altering the statistic further. In this paper, we look at what 2018 statistics have the greatest effect on an individual player’s wRC+. Using various statistical databases such as Lahman's Baseball Database (Lahman, 2011) and FanGraphs' publicly available resources, we compiled data and manipulated it to form an overall formula to determine the value of a player for his individual team. To analyze the data, we researched formulas to determine an individual player's hitting, fielding, and pitching production during games. We examined statistics such as hits, walks, and innings played to establish how many runs each player added to their teams' total runs scored, and then used that value to figure how they performed relative to other players. Using these values, we utilized the Pythagorean Expected Wins formula to calculate a coefficient reflecting the number of runs each team in the Major Leagues scored per win. Using our statistic, baseball teams would be able to compare the impact of their players on the team when evaluating talent and determining salary. Our investigation's original focusing question was "How much is an individual player worth to his team?" Over the course of the year, we modified our focusing question to: "What impact does each individual player have on his team's performance over the course of a season?" Though both ask very similar questions, there are significant differences between them.

Defensive outs are used in National Championships as a qualification rule. PO - Put out (10.09) A putout shall be credited to each fielder who (1) Catches a fly ball or a line drive, whether fair or foul. (2) Catches a thrown ball, which puts out a batter or a runner. (3) Tags a runner when the runner is off the base to which he is legally entitled. A – Assist (10.10) Any fielder who throws or deflects a battered or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results or would have except for a subsequent error, will be credited with an Assist. Stolen bases are on the decline, while strikeouts, walks, and homeruns have steadily increased. Hitters care more and more about their launch angle and pitchers have started using high speed cameras to analyze their movement. Despite these changes, there are still many areas that need investigation. This paper seeks to investigate the quality of contact that a pitcher allows. Not much is currently known about quality of contact, but if factors determining quality of contact could be determined it could assist teams in identifying and developing pitching talent.

    1. Intro To Scorekeeping The following terms will be used on this site: Cell: The term cell refers to the square in which the player’s at-bat is recorded. In this illustration, the cell is the box where the diagram is drawn. Scorecard, Scorebook: Will be used interchangeably and refer to the sheet that records the player and scoring information during a baseball game. Scorekeeper: Refers to someone on a team that keeps the score for the purposes of the team. Official Scorer: The designated person whose scorekeeping is considered the official record of the game. The Official Scorer is not a member of either team. Baseball’s Defensive Positions To “keep score” of a baseball game it is essential to know the defensive positions and their shorthand representation. For example, the number “1” is used to refer to the pitcher (P). NOTE : In the younger levels of youth baseball leagues 10 defensive players are used. This 10 th position is know as the Short Center Fielder (SC) and is positioned between second base and the second baseman, on the beginning of the outfield grass. The Short Center Fielder bats and can be placed anywhere in the batting lineup.
