ECOHYDROLOGICAL CHARACTERISATION OF WHANGAMARINO WETLAND A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Earth Sciences at The University of Waikato By JAMES MITCHELL BLYTH The University of Waikato 2011 Abstract The Whangamarino wetland is internationally recognised and one of the most important lowland wetland ecosystems in the Waikato Region. The wetland‟s hydrology has been altered by reduced river base levels, the installation of a weir to raise minimum water levels and the Lower Waikato Waipa Flood Control Scheme, which is linked via the (hypertrophic) Lake Waikare and affected by varying catchment land use practices. When water levels exceed capacity, the overflow is released into the Whangamarino wetland, which also receives flood waters from Whangamarino River. Water levels in the wetland are also affected at high stage, by a control structure near Meremere at the confluence of Waikato and Whangamarino Rivers, and at low stage by a weir a short distance upstream. -

WITHDRAW AND APOLOGISE: A DIACHRONIC STUDY OF UNPARLIAMENTARY LANGUAGE IN THE NEW ZEALAND PARLIAMENT, 1890-1950 BY RUTH GRAHAM A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics Victoria University of Wellington 2016 ii “Parliament, after all, is not a Sunday school; it is a talking-shop; a place of debate”. (Barnard, 1943) iii Abstract This study presents a diachronic analysis of the language ruled to be unparliamentary in the New Zealand Parliament from 1890 to 1950. While unparliamentary language is sometimes referred to as ‘parliamentary insults’ (Ilie, 2001), this study has a wider definition: the language used in a legislative chamber is unparliamentary when it is ruled or signalled by the Speaker as out of order or likely to cause disorder. The user is required to articulate a statement of withdrawal and apology or risk further censure. The analysis uses the Communities of Practice theoretical framework, developed by Wenger (1998) and enhanced with linguistic impoliteness, as defined by Mills (2005) in order to contextualise the use of unparliamentary language within a highly regulated institutional setting. The study identifies and categorises the lexis of unparliamentary language, including a focus on examples that use New Zealand English or te reo Māori. Approximately 2600 examples of unparliamentary language, along with bibliographic, lexical, descriptive and contextual information, were entered into a custom designed relational database. The examples were categorised into three: ‘core concepts’, ‘personal reflections’ and the ‘political environment’, with a number of sub-categories. This revealed a previously unknown category of ‘situation dependent’ unparliamentary language and a creative use of ‘animal reflections’. -

They are important sources for food, fresh water and building materials and provide valuable services such as water treatmentSum and erosion control. The estimates in this paper show, for example, that unvegetated sediment wetlands like the Dutch Wadden Sea and the Rufiji Delta in Tanzania have the highest median economic values of all wetland types at $374 per hectare per year. -

Resilient Wetlands Research Programme Update 7: July 2017 to June 2018 Bev Clarkson, Dave Campbell, Yvonne Taura, Chris Tanner Overview Our Resilient Wetlands research programme is funded by the Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF) Crown Research Institutes from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Science and Innovation Group (previously ‘core’ funding). The following update summarises the major outputs and successes between July 2017 and June 2018. O tu Wharekai wetlands relatively resilient to N-loading in the short term. Our 3-year fertiliser (N, P) experiment in a montane fen to determine the vulnerability of natural wetlands to agricultural inputs has now been completed. Olivia Burge led the data analysis and write-up of the journal paper, which has just been submitted. The catchment, on the foothills of the Southen Alps, is largely intact, with very low atmospheric nitrogen inputs. We found little evidence of community-level change after 3 years of nutrient addition, aside from increasing dominance in cover of the most abundant canopy species and decreases in species richness, in the highest N treatment (both nitrate-N and ammonium-N) plots. Species richness decreases were due to losses of both native and exotic species. Further work is required to assess the longer-term resilience of New Zealand wetlands to agricultural losses of N and P, the impacts of which have largely gone unstudied. This is explored primarily in the context of New Zealand's social, cultural and economic values and norms, and the influences of these human constructs on sensitive ecological systems, using the Whangamarino Wetland and its sub-catchment as a case study. Collaborative management can be defined as a situation m which some or all of the relevant stakeholders in a protected area are involved in a substantial way in governance, management and monitoring activities. In the New Zealand context, collaborative management would need to involve an equal partnership between the Crown and tangata whenua at a governance level. At a management and monitoring level, all the relevant stakeholders (primarily including the local community, recreational and resource users, and mana whenua) would be involved in a process which specifies and guarantees their respective functions, rights and responsibilities with regard to the relevant ecosystem.
