Master's Thesis
I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other. -

“World Hunger Day Is a Hard Day” 1 John 3:16-18
“World Hunger Day is a Hard Day” 1 John 3:16-18 Brett Younger Senior Minister October 11, 2020 World Hunger Day We know love by this, that Christ laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses to help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. Ivan has a great voice, and I like trying to remember my high school espanol. Erica knows how to lead a prayer. Julia’s children’s sermon would make anyone of any age want to share. We have read ten passages of scripture, which is a lot, though there are, by one count, 3,000 verses on hunger in the Bible. I still wish it was not World Hunger Day. Some of you do, too. World Hunger Day is hard. We would rather not think about hungry children. When the images of starving preschoolers appear on the screen we watch only long enough to avoid seeming heartless. World Hunger Day costs money. Our finances are confusing right now. Some of us have spouses who want to give more than we want to give. World Hunger Day does not make the church popular. People have been giving to a variety of causes. We worry about criticism that the church is always asking for money. Feeding hungry children does not increase church attendance. World Hunger Day does not make the preacher popular. -

Glee: Give Us Something to Sing About Meenasarani Linde Murugan
Glee: Give Us Something to Sing About Meenasarani Linde Murugan Good Vibrations: Glee’s Pop Music Archive Glee occurs at the intersection of various genres: teen program, musical, and variety show. Though the copious amount of musical numbers makes it difficult to parse out the various ways music is integrated into the show, what is apparent is the show’s enacting of an archive of pop music. The show revives forgotten songs, puts them in dialogue with or at least puts them next to recent hits, reinvigorating them for viewers of a wide age range. In featuring young performers doing renditions of old songs, Glee is similar to American Idol. On Idol, a pop archive is presented to the audience and in some cases to the singers as well. On a Stevie Wonder-themed episode, beginning music buffs can learn his body of work, devotees can see their favorite songs reinterpreted, and a singer can learn that even though he’s a rocker, soul can too work for him. A similar moment of singer-song incompatibility happens when Mr. Schuester makes the boys sing Madonna’s “What It Feels Like For a Girl.” Here, a legendary artist’s pop song is taken off its pedestal, free from the assessment of judges, and into the realm of the relational and interior. Unlike Idol where young singers are trying to be deserving of the pop song they choose to sing, Glee presents a youth that is often best expressed with the songs of an earlier generation. This interest with songs of the past is not foreign to teenagers, on screen and off, but demonstrates how teen television uses music to add depth to their characters. -
