Electronic Spectroscopy of Free Base Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins
Absorption and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Tetraphenylporphyrin§ and Metallo-Tetraphenylporphyrin Introduction The word porphyrin is derived from the Greek porphura meaning purple, and all porphyrins are intensely coloured1. Porphyrins comprise an important class of molecules that serve nature in a variety of ways. The Metalloporphyrin ring is found in a variety of important biological system where it is the active component of the system or in some ways intimately connected with the activity of the system. Many of these porphyrins synthesized are the basic structure of biological porphyrins which are the active sites of numerous proteins, whose functions range from oxygen transfer and storage (hemoglobin and myoglobin) to electron transfer (cytochrome c, cytochrome oxidase) to energy conversion (chlorophyll). They also have been proven to be efficient sensitizers and catalyst in a number of chemical and photochemical processes especially photodynamic therapy (PDT). The diversity of their functions is due in part to the variety of metals that bind in the “pocket” of the porphyrin ring system (Fig. 1). Figure 1. Metallated Tetraphenylporphyrin Upon metalation the porphyrin ring system deprotonates, forming a dianionic ligand (Fig. 2). The metal ions behave as Lewis acids, accepting lone pairs of electrons ________________________________ § We all need to thank Jay Stephens for synthesizing the H2TPP 2 from the dianionic porphyrin ligand. Unlike most transition metal complexes, their color is due to absorption(s) within the porphyrin ligand involving the excitation of electrons from π to π* porphyrin ring orbitals. Figure 2. Synthesis of Zn(TPP) The electronic absorption spectrum of a typical porphyrin consists of a strong transition to the second excited state (S0 S2) at about 400 nm (the Soret or B band) and a weak transition to the first excited state (S0 S1) at about 550 nm (the Q band). -

Synthesis and Characterizations of Novel Magnetic and Plasmonic Nanoparticles
SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATIONS OF NOVEL MAGNETIC AND PLASMONIC NANOPARTICLES by NAWEEN DAHAL B.S., TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY, 1995 M.S., TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY, 1997 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2010 Abstract This dissertation reports the colloidal synthesis of iron silicide, hafnium oxide core-gold shell and water soluble iron-gold alloy for the first time. As the first part of the experimentation, plasmonic and superparamagnetic nanoparticles of gold and iron are synthesized in the form of core-shell and alloy. The purpose of making these nanoparticles is that the core-shell and alloy nanoparticles exhibit enhanced properties and new functionality due to close proximity of two functionally different components. The synthesis of core-shell and alloy nanoparticles is of special interest for possible application towards magnetic hyperthermia, catalysis and drug delivery. The iron-gold core-shell nanoparticles prepared in the reverse micelles reflux in high boiling point solvent (diphenyl ether) in presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine results in the formation of monodisperse core-shell nanoparticles. The second part of the experimentation includes the preparation of water soluble iron- gold alloy nanoparticles. The alloy nanoparticles are prepared for the first time at relatively low temperature (110 oC). The use of hydrophilic ligand 3-mercapto-1-propane sulphonic acid ensures the aqueous solubility of the alloy nanoparticles. Next, hafnium oxide core-gold shell nanoparticles are prepared for the first time using high temperature reduction method. These nanoparticles are potentially important as a high κ material in semiconductor industry. -

In developing nations such as Ghana, the activity is done both legally and illegally, often with very little or no supervision, hence much damage is done to the water bodies where the activities are carried out. This study sought to assess the social impacts of illegal gold mining activities at Dunkwa-On-Offin, the capital town of Upper Denkyira East Municipality in the Central Region of Ghana. The main objectives of the research are to identify factors that trigger illegal mining; to identify social effects of illegal gold mining activities on inhabitants of Dunkwa-on-Offin; and to suggest effective ways in curbing illegal mining activities. Based on the approach to data collection, this study adopts both the quantitative and qualitative approach. -

Warez All That Pirated Software Coming From?
Articles http://www.informit.com/articles/printerfriendly.asp?p=29894 Warez All that Pirated Software Coming From? Date: Nov 1, 2002 By Seth Fogie. Article is provided courtesy of Prentice Hall PTR. In this world of casual piracy, many people have forgotten or just never realized where many software releases originate. Seth Fogie looks at the past, present, and future of the warez industry; and illustrates the simple fact that "free" software is here to stay. NOTE The purpose of this article is to provide an educational overview of warez. The author is not taking a stance on the legality, morality, or any other *.ality on the issues surrounding the subject of warez and pirated software. In addition, no software was pirated, cracked, or otherwise illegally obtained during the writing of this article. Software piracy is one of the hottest subjects in today's computerized culture. With the upheaval of Napster and the subsequent spread of peer-to-peer programs, the casual sharing of software has become a world-wide pastime. All it takes is a few minutes on a DSL connection, and KazaA (or KazaA-Lite for those people who don't want adware) and any 10-year-old kid can have the latest pop song hit in their possession. As if deeply offending the music industry isn't enough, the same avenues taken to obtain cheap music also holds a vast number of software games and applications—some worth over $10,000. While it may be common knowledge that these items are available online, what isn't commonly known is the complexity of the process that many of these "releases" go through before they hit the file-sharing mainstream. -
