Contributors Writer and art critic Peter Culley lives in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. A collection of his poems entitled Hammertown was just published by New Star Press. Vancouver. Geoffrey Farmer is an artist living in Vancouver. He is represented by the Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver. Rodney Graham is an artist living in Vancouver. His upcoming retrospective A Little Thought will be touring in 2004105 at the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His work appears here courtesy of Donald Young Gallery, Chcago. Peter Hudson is a doctoral candidate in American Studies at New York University. He currently lives in Brooklyn. Trevor Mahovsky is an artist and writer who lives and works in Vancouver. Phillip McCrum is an artist who lived in Belfast during 2001-2002 and in Hangzhou, China, from 2002-2003. He is recovering, teaching in the Department of Art of the University of Lethbridge. Michael Euyung Oh has presented his work in a solo show at the Or Gallery in 2002 and recently exhibited in group shows at Access Art Centre, Presen- tation House Gallery, and the Western Front. A graduate of the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, he is currently a MFA student at The University of British Columbia. Amy Pederson is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Art History of the University of California, Los Angeles. She travelled to Asia in 2001 on a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship for Summer Travel Abroad by Historians of American Art from the Center for the Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Marina Roy is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory at The University of British Columbia. Her book Sign After the X is available from Advance EditionsIArsenal Pulp Press and Artspeak Gallery. She will be exhibiting a collaborative video project with Natasha McHardy at the Or Gallery, Vancouver, in February 2004. Kevin Schmidt is an artist who lives and works in Vancouver. Steven Shearer is an artist living in Vancouver. Reid Shier is a curator at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, and an artist and writer. Ron Terada is an artist based in Vancouver. Recent exhibitions and projects include "Baja to Vancouver: The West Coast and Contemporary Art", Seattle Art Museum, Defile Magazine, Art Metropole and YYZ Artists' Outlet, Toronto; "Big Toast", iprojects.org, Charles H. Scott Gallery, Vancouver. He is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery. Althea Thauberger is an artist whose photographic, performance, and video works often involve collaboration with their subjects. She lives and works in Vancouver. Michael Turner is an author living in Vancouver. His most recent novel is The Pornographer's Poem (2002) published by Vintage Books Canada. Neil Wedman is an artist and singer who lives in Vancouver. William Wood is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory at The University of British Columbia. .

These activities were prepared with Laura Briscoe & Jeni Van Kesteren of Art of Math Education. Jock Macdonald (1897–1960) was one of the most radical artists in Canada in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1930s he began experimenting with abstraction, a quest that led him to many different disciplines. As author Joyce Zemans has noted, he was “guided by the most current discussions of art and aesthetics and of mathematical and scientific theories.” In the spirit of Macdonald’s works, the activities in this guide connect visual arts and mathematics. This connection will make Macdonald’s art more engaging for students and inspire a creative, personalized approach to understanding mathematical concepts of circles.

The Skullcracker Suite
DR JOHN CUSSANS DEPARTMENT: FINE ART REF OUTPUT 2 2014 - 2020 THE SKULLCRACKER SUITE A LONG- TERM INTER- DISCIPLINARY ARTISTIC RESEARCH PROJECT INVESTIGATING PROCESSES OF CULTURAL DECOLONIZATION IN BRITISH COLUMBIA. RESEARCH STATEMENT The Skullcracker Suite is long-term inter-disciplinary artistic research project investigating processes of cultural decolonization in British Columbia. The name is inspired by Hox’hok, the giant cannibal crane of Canadian First Nation legend who cracks the skulls of humans to eat their brains. The project was conceived in the Summer of 2015 during a meeting with Steve Calvert, a Canadian artist who, between 2012 and 2014, had documented the potlatch ceremonies and copper-breaking protests of the Kwakwaka’wakw artist and chief Beau Dick. Inspired by the idea of combining aspects of the winter ceremonial and potlatch traditions of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples with decolonial, ecological and science fictional currents within contemporary art and critical theory, The Skullcracker Suite was imagined as a dramatic theatrical allegory for the ‘permanent decolonization of thought’ proposed by the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. In June 2016 I was awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship to begin the first phase of research. This culminated in BC Time-Slip (The Empire Never Ended), a multi-component portfolio of works investigating the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick’s fateful visit to Vancouver in 1972. BC TIME-SLIP (THE EMPIRE NEVER ENDED) The project takes its name from Philip K.
