Hull History Centre: Account books of John Hudson of Howsham U DX251 Account books of John Hudson of Howsham 1799 Biographical Background: John Hudson of Howsham, a Scarborough merchant and farmer, was probably born in 1756 and died in 1808. He married an Elizabeth Ruston and had seven children, including two daughters and five sons. His youngest son, George Hudson, later became known as 'The Railway King'. George Hudson was born in March 1800 and died on 14 December 1871. He became famous as a English railway financier, earning the nickname "The Railway King”. He initially apprenticed as a draper at Bell and Nicholson in York. In 1820 he was taken on by the firm as a tradesman and given a share of the business. By 1827 it was the largest business in York. Also in 1827, he inherited £30,000 from his great uncle. Hudson played a major part in establishing the York Union Banking Company and he first became Lord Mayor in York in 1837. He was Lord Mayor three times as well as deputy-lieutenant for Durham and Conservative Member of Parliament for Sunderland from August 1845 until 1859. Hudson was instrumental in the expansion of the railways across England and in the Railway Clearing House (1842). He amalgamated the North Midland, the Midland Counties Railway and the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway in 1844 to become the Midland Railway. He initiated the Newcastle and Darlington line in 1841 and with George Stephenson, planned and carried out the extension of the York & North Midland Railway to Newcastle. By 1844 he had control of over a thousand miles of railway.

  • Appendix 1 – Local Bus Reductions 1. Service – Sherwood Arrow Bassetlaw, Newark & Sherwood Average Passengers Per Trip
Appendix 1 – Local Bus Reductions Background. In 2015 an Option for Change was approved by Full Council to reduce the Local Bus budget by £720k by 2017. This comprised £150k achieved through earlier reviews, £150k through network efficiencies in Bassetlaw and Ollerton and the remaining £420k to be achieved through other reductions and withdrawals. The MRG has been concerned with the £420k reduction of contract costs, with options and plans presented at a number of meetings. This paper contains the final proposals to achieve the necessary reductions with further background information and supporting evidence contained in the appendix. Current and proposed timetables, SPTF and passenger survey data are included where applicable. A list of villages in Nottinghamshire which currently have no public transport service, along with any changes is also included. Proposals. The seven proposals below will deliver an expected £420k saving from the local bus budget. 1. Service – Sherwood Arrow Bassetlaw, Newark & Sherwood Average passengers per trip = 0.4 Average cost per passenger = £64.61 Saving - £6,659 Proposal to withdraw the support contract for the 06:40 journey of the Sherwood Arrow from Worksop to Ollerton, the Ollerton to Nottingham journey will be unaffected. There are alternative options available either at an earlier or later time or by using the Robin Hood Line train route. This will deliver a full year saving of £6,659. 2. Service 3,3A/31A,31B/41,41B Newark & Sherwood Average passengers per trip = 2.1 Average cost per passenger = £16.33 Saving – approx. £80k The proposal is to withdraw the support contracts for the above services and to replace some elements with revised routes and timetables.

  • OPUN Eastwood
opun design east midlands EastwoodBrinsley Eastwood Opun Design Review Panel workshop 03.10.16 Eastwood Executive Summary The Opun Panel judged the issues detailed below to be of particular importance. Where we have suggested additional work, it is envisaged that this will be carried out by an applicant as part of a planning application. It is important to note that the recommendations for additional work made here do not preclude or prevent the allocation of the site. Key points are: • Prioritising development to the east of the site to protect and enhance the setting of the Hall Farm listed building and minimise the impact upon the Conservation Area. • Accessing the site off A680 Mansfield Road to the west of the site, if possible by utilising the existing footpath / lane. • Retaining and enhancing existing rights of way and other footpaths / cycle ways across the site and to fully integrate the routes as part of any development. • Creating a new public footpath / green infrastructure route along the northern boundary of the site. • Develop an open spaces strategy for the site including clarifying the form, function and the interconnectivity between the existing spaces on site i.e. cricket ground, Brinsley Brook etc. • Ensure existing trees and hedgerows are fully integrated into proposed developments which retains and enhances their function i.e. green corridor to Brinsley Brook, key mature trees to the western of the site, the former railway line etc. 2 opun design east midlands Introduction Opun are working with Broxtowe Borough Council in providing design support and advice on a number of sites within the district for potential residential development.

  • Nottingham Road, Cropwell Bishop) (Prohibition of Waiting) Traffic Regulation Order 2015 (8227)
Report to Transport and Highways Committee 12 th November 2015 Agenda Item:10 REPORT OF SERVICE DIRECTOR, HIGHWAYS THE NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL (NOTTINGHAM ROAD, CROPWELL BISHOP) (PROHIBITION OF WAITING) TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2015 (8227) CONSIDERATION OF OBJECTIONS Purpose of the Report 1. To consider the objections received in respect of the above Traffic Regulation Order and whether it should be made as advertised. Information and Advice 2. Cropwell Bishop is a village in the borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire, 1.2 miles to the east of the A46. Nottingham Road forms part of the main street through the village linking to the A46. The proposals relate to a section of Nottingham Road that provides access to a number of side streets, has residential properties fronting the road, a number of small businesses, a local public house and Methodist church. Not all of the residential properties fronting Nottingham Road have off-street parking provision. 3. The County Council has received requests from local residents, Cropwell Bishop Parish Council and County Councillor Richard Butler to consider introducing waiting restrictions in the village to help alleviate issues with parking patterns causing traffic congestion and conflict. A key problem is that the main route through the village is not wide enough for cars in both directions and as a result the County Council is proposing to introduce ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ (double yellow lines) along parts of Nottingham Road and at the junctions of Barrett Close and Mill lane. 4. The statutory consultation and public advertisement of the proposals was carried out between 14 th May 2015 and 4th June 2015, as detailed on the attached drawing H/8227/TRO2.

  • Volume 4: Spring Walks
1 Introduction Welcome to our fourth volume of ‘100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint’. This volume contains Spring Walks for you to enjoy now that the lockdown has eased. I hope that you find it useful. You will find 49 walks in this volume bringing the total number of walks in the series to 150! This volume is quite different to the other volumes. These walks have been specially selected from a wider radius of Lady Bay. This gives us more choice, more variety, and the chance to showcase different areas. Most of the walks start within 30 minutes’ drive from the Poppy and Pint and most are relatively short walks of around two to three hours. All have been chosen because they hold one or more points of interest. Moreover, the paths are quiet, they are varied, and all are on good, waymarked paths. This makes them ideal spring walks just after the lockdown. Being out on the trail in the open air anywhere lifts the spirits, is good for the soul, and gives our lives a different perspective. I think we always feel better when we come back from a walk! Do try it and see! This is the fourth volume of walks to complement Volumes One, Two and Three. Unfortunately, it is not possible to put these four volumes into one tome as the subsequent size of the file would be too big to e mail! When I set myself the challenge of researching and creating 100 local walks, I never actually thought it was possible.
