Serving the communities of Giltbrook, Greasley, Moorgreen, Newthorpe & Watnall 18th July 2014. Dear Mr Kingsley, Broxtowe Review Our Members were extremely disappointed to read the suggestions for Greasley put forward in the Review’s draft recommendations. They give the impression of surrounding communities trying to increase their own standing for political purposes at the expense of Greasley’s heritage. The Council has introduced a number of initiatives to strengthen the bonds between the five communities within the parish and as these initiatives continue to be increasingly popular we believe that the residents have spoken – “we want to stay as we are and live in Greasley.” The proposed changes do not recognise either the area’s tradition or its modern day allegiances. As we said in our earlier submission, at the very least every ward covering any part of the parish should have the name Greasley in its title. This is seen as essential to protect the parish’s identity. Whilst individual councillors have the right to their view on these matters we pay special attention to the collective view of the local Parish Council. We note the suggested Eastwood Hall re-naming but would say this is out of kilter with reality as all the residents in the Coach Drive - Brunel Avenue area are residents of Greasley, many with addresses shown as Newthorpe Grange. We also feel that the ad hoc tacking on off areas to bolster wards puts councillors in a potentially difficult situation of trying to represent the views of urban residents which are often at odds with those in rural communities. Beeston .. was always a sort of eyesore to us .. a wilderness of more or less squalid or vulgar little houses and mean shops .. a tolerably quiet sort of place and you rode or drove through it in a very few minutes.” These are the words of Catherine Mary Bearne written in the “Charlton Chronicles” circa 1860. How do you think the current Beeston (and district) compares and how do you think the Society is doing in meeting our objective of “ protecting and improving the environment ” ? In the centre pages of this issue is a survey intended as an opportunity for you to express your views about the work of the Society. Please do take the time to complete it and hand your response to a member of the Committee. A summary will appear in the December edition of the newsletter. Also enclosed with this edition is the local programme of Heritage Open Days and the 2011 – 2012 programme of Speakers. Appendix 1 – Local Bus Reductions Background. In 2015 an Option for Change was approved by Full Council to reduce the Local Bus budget by £720k by 2017. This comprised £150k achieved through earlier reviews, £150k through network efficiencies in Bassetlaw and Ollerton and the remaining £420k to be achieved through other reductions and withdrawals. The MRG has been concerned with the £420k reduction of contract costs, with options and plans presented at a number of meetings. This paper contains the final proposals to achieve the necessary reductions with further background information and supporting evidence contained in the appendix. Current and proposed timetables, SPTF and passenger survey data are included where applicable. A list of villages in Nottinghamshire which currently have no public transport service, along with any changes is also included. Proposals. The seven proposals below will deliver an expected £420k saving from the local bus budget. 1. Service – Sherwood Arrow Bassetlaw, Newark & Sherwood Average passengers per trip = 0.4 Average cost per passenger = £64.61 Saving - £6,659 Proposal to withdraw the support contract for the 06:40 journey of the Sherwood Arrow from Worksop to Ollerton, the Ollerton to Nottingham journey will be unaffected. There are alternative options available either at an earlier or later time or by using the Robin Hood Line train route. This will deliver a full year saving of £6,659. 2. Service 3,3A/31A,31B/41,41B Newark & Sherwood Average passengers per trip = 2.1 Average cost per passenger = £16.33 Saving – approx. £80k The proposal is to withdraw the support contracts for the above services and to replace some elements with revised routes and timetables.

Where we have suggested additional work, it is envisaged that this will be carried out by an applicant as part of a planning application. It is important to note that the recommendations for additional work made here do not preclude or prevent the allocation of the site. Key points are: • Prioritising development to the east of the site to protect and enhance the setting of the Hall Farm listed building and minimise the impact upon the Conservation Area. • Accessing the site off A680 Mansfield Road to the west of the site, if possible by utilising the existing footpath / lane. • Retaining and enhancing existing rights of way and other footpaths / cycle ways across the site and to fully integrate the routes as part of any development. • Creating a new public footpath / green infrastructure route along the northern boundary of the site. • Develop an open spaces strategy for the site including clarifying the form, function and the interconnectivity between the existing spaces on site i.e. cricket ground, Brinsley Brook etc. • Ensure existing trees and hedgerows are fully integrated into proposed developments which retains and enhances their function i.e. green corridor to Brinsley Brook, key mature trees to the western of the site, the former railway line etc. 2 opun design east midlands Introduction Opun are working with Broxtowe Borough Council in providing design support and advice on a number of sites within the district for potential residential development.

1 Introduction Welcome to our fourth volume of ‘100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint’. This volume contains Spring Walks for you to enjoy now that the lockdown has eased. I hope that you find it useful. You will find 49 walks in this volume bringing the total number of walks in the series to 150! This volume is quite different to the other volumes. These walks have been specially selected from a wider radius of Lady Bay. This gives us more choice, more variety, and the chance to showcase different areas. Most of the walks start within 30 minutes’ drive from the Poppy and Pint and most are relatively short walks of around two to three hours. All have been chosen because they hold one or more points of interest. Moreover, the paths are quiet, they are varied, and all are on good, waymarked paths. This makes them ideal spring walks just after the lockdown. Being out on the trail in the open air anywhere lifts the spirits, is good for the soul, and gives our lives a different perspective. I think we always feel better when we come back from a walk! Do try it and see! This is the fourth volume of walks to complement Volumes One, Two and Three. Unfortunately, it is not possible to put these four volumes into one tome as the subsequent size of the file would be too big to e mail! When I set myself the challenge of researching and creating 100 local walks, I never actually thought it was possible.

Nottinghamshire Aviation Memorials Aviation | Aviation Memorials in Nottinghamshire We love to commemorate our aviation heritage. In Nottinghamshire We Love To Commemorate Our Aviation Heritage The diversity of aviation memorial locations across the county is impressive. These memorials are not just at airfield sites, but they can also be found in churches, village halls, on city streets and at remote countryside locations. Some memorials are relatively new, whilst others can trace their origins back Nottinghamshire decades. These memorials, some of them raised through public subscription, reflect the lives of national figures like Albert Ball VC; whilst others are simpler marks of respect that have been erected thanks to the efforts of small groups of individuals. There are even sculptures and pub signs that highlight the county’s contribution to the development of significant aviation technologies. Collectively they play a part in helping to commemorate the county’s aviation heritage. Many individuals had travelled from around the world to air bases in Aviation Memorials Aviation | Nottinghamshire to train as World War II bomber crews. A common bond that joins most of these memorials together is that they commemorate the lives of brave individuals who were lost whilst learning these new skills; often in difficult weather conditions, a long way from home and in a relatively congested airspace, caused by having a lot of airfields so close together. For each of the memorials listed we have provided some background information about the crews involved and the circumstances of the crash; this is merely a snapshot of incidents that are recorded in more detail in books and on websites and we would encourage you to investigate them further.
