Championship People

For many drivers and workers this is the time of year we really look forward to with both the Solo Nation- als and The Runoffs. While we have grown accustomed to the Solo Nationals being close by, obviously the big news is the Runoffs coming to our home track, Heartland Park. This gives us a great opportunity to invite our friends, relatives and business associates to come see what we do on the weekends in the atmosphere that only the Runoffs can offer.

While our drivers will have their stories of glory or despair, most of the fun to be had and stories from the parties will come from our workers. The list of KC Region members working this years Runoffs include Ken Kern, Eric Linhoff, Bill Rinke, Chuck Austin, Hal Kemrite, Linda Henson, Alex Clark, Doug Gill, John & Phyllis Nelson, Peter Wilke, Char & Ken Keith, Victor Laviola, Neava Ford, Brian Harris, Nancy John- son, Sharlene Smith, Norma Williams, Chuck Austin, Joel Fish, Steve Nafus, David Bennett, Steve Rob- erts, Dena Smith, Ken Snyder, and Mike Asselta.

In addition to these people we also have 7 individuals that have earned leadership positions at the Run- offs through their hard work and performance this past year. This “Magnificent Seven” include: Ken Ragan, Co Chief ES Course Marshall – Gini Ragan, Assistant Chief Timing & Scoring – Robert Thomp- son, Chief ES / Rescue Firefighters – Bill Johnson (older), TV Observer - Chris Keith, Assistant Chief Flagging – Buzz Fisher, Tech Steward – Dale Smith, Tech Supervisor Formula and Sports Racers. Congratulations to these 7 and all of our workers on a great year. This year’s Runoffs is another oppor- tunity to show everyone what great people we have in the Kansas City Region.

At our October general meeting we will special guests Pego Mack, SCCA Rally Manager along with Mike Dickerson and Rich Biretta. Many of you know Mike, our clubs Manager of Region Development and Rich Biretta who helped us with our first rally last year. Pego will talk about the USRRC, how we can be involved and the clubs expanding Rally program.

KVRG elections will be held at our November Board meeting, November 28th. Those interested please get your info in to Gini Ragan by Nov 25.

To everyone participating this month, good luck and have fun.

SCCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY from the 2005 Media Guide

From l951 through l964, the Sports Car Club of America determined its amateur road racing National Champions on a nationwide point basis from the United States Road Racing Championship, a select series of National races run throughout the country. In the first three years, only one overall champion was named. From l954 on, champions were named in each of the SCCA amateur classes.

In l964 it was decided that better way would be to gather the best amateur road racers in one place to compete against each other in an Interdivisional Championship Event. In the first two years, the winners were not officially designated as the SCCA National Champions. 1966 was the first year the event was officially designated as the SCCA National Championship event. In retrospect, the Runoffs winners of 1964 and l965 are similarly recognized.

In l964, there were two Championships – the final year of the point series and the first year of the Run- offs.

THE HISTORY OF THE RUNOFFS

Over the year, the name has changed as well as the method of qualifying for the event, but the idea has remained to gather the best amateur road racers in one place and let them compete against one an- other.

For the first six years, the event alternated between Riverside International Raceway in California (1964, 1966, 1968) and Daytona International Speedway (l965, 1967, 1969). For the next 24 years the Runoffs were held at in Braselton, GA. The Runoffs moved to Lexington Ohio’s Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 1994…

During the early years, the event was known as the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC)… In 1973, when Champion Spark Plugs signed on as the event sponsor the name became the Champion Spark Plugs Road Racing Classic (CSPRRC). In 1983, the words “The Runoffs” were added to the CSPRRC and then in 1985, Valvoline took over as sponsor of the event and it became the Valvoline Road Racing Classic – The Runoffs (VRRC). 1987 saw the name shortened to just “The Vaovoline Runoffs” which was used until 2005 when Kohler was named as the new presenting sponsor.

Dear Mom:

Max Williams jaw surgery has been successfully completed by Dr. Kirk Collier and he is on the road to recovery. Bonnie Haupt, a nurse at Overland Park Regional Medical Center saw the article in Checkpoint about Max’s upcoming surgery and checked the hospital board that morning. She came to see Max and his parents (Keith & Cheryl) before the surgery. Max is back in school after missing only 7 days. Kyle Ritter and Stacey Riney became Mr. & Mrs. on Saturday, September 9th, 2006. They were married at the Nativity of Mary Church in Independence, MO. Stacey’s sister was the maid of honor, David Bennett was the best man, Richard Henson, brother of Bob, was a groomsman and Kyle’s sister was the candle lighter. KCR members attending were Bob, Linda, Danielle & Robert Henson, Charlie & Sharlene Smith, Melissa Bennett, Jason Mabee and Bill & Nancy Johnson. The Musical Masterpieces Gala, which benefits the Kansas City Symphony and its youth education programs, has raised $61,000 the past four years by auctioning musical instruments that have been transformed into works of art. A recent Kansas City Star Magazine showed a picture of the three ladies who will be in charge of next years gala, scheduled for June. One of the ladies is Linda Hartman. Ken Kern, of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, was in town recently and dined on Thursday evening with Shirley & Jill (two of the original Lizards) at the Mission Outback restaurant. His server was Brittney Wil- liams, daughter of Brian. Brittney said that Ken was a very good “tipper“! Ken & Shirley attended his 50th high school reunion at Rosedale on Saturday night. Ken said he will be in Topeka for the National runoffs in October but this will be his last year to work the runoffs. Steve Eberman said his son, Kevin has a website set up so that Steve & Mary can keep up with the three grandsons, Elias (6), Leo (3) and Henry (born in March). Kevin updates the website about every week. Mom heard a rumor that Bill Johnson (the elder) crashed his “hawg” Saturday morning at MAM. Something about checking a fuel problem but the “hawg” fell on top of Bill. He had to be “rescued” by a Nebraska Region worker who lifted the “hawg” off of Bill. Bill, the SOM chairman at this event suffered a skinned arm & leg!! The “hawg” is actually a Honda mini bike! We now hear that the mini bike has train- ing wheels. Chuck & Sue Woloscsuk were in town for Sue’s class reunion. They now live in Timberon, New Mexico so while here, they also saw their doctor and dentist. Sue said they will not be coming back to Topeka this year for the runoffs. The U S Navy Blue Angels, the internationally renowned jet team performed this weekend at The 2006 Kansas City Aviation Expo and Airshow at the Charles B Wheeler Downtown Airport. They are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. The pilots, including Kent Egy’s nephew, Lt. Cmdr. Shaun Swartz , put their Boeing F/A-18 Hornets through some high-speed precision demonstrations for the crowds. Shaun who was raised in Leawood, KS, said “Coming home to showcase the Blue Angels’ program to my friends and family is special“. Shaun, we think you and the Blue Angels are very special too! Mary Merola flew to Chicago to spend a few days on a purchasing trip for Function Junction.

The Eleven-Elevenths Rally

“A rally so nice, they named it twice.”

Kansas City Region TSD Road Rally

Saturday, November 11, 2006

The Eleven-Elevenths Rally is a TSD (time-speed-distance) Touring Rally sanctioned by the Kansas City Region of the SCCA.

The rally is a test of teamwork between driver and navigator - no equipment other than a speedometer and a watch will be needed to field a competitive team. This rally will also be driveable by “Great Race” rallyists, as part of the Partnership between the SCCA and the sponsors of the Great Race, announced September 12th – details at http://www.scca.com/News/News.asp?Ref=649

The rally has been designed to be an enjoyable drive - what’s the point of a rally otherwise? Clear, straightforward route instructions, specifying legal average speeds, will test the rallyists’ ability to stay on time, arriving at unknown checkpoint locations neither early nor late.

The entry fee is $22 per car, and trophies will be awarded to the best finishers. Any street-legal automobile capable of normal street and highway speeds can be competitively entered. The last rally checkpoint will be near the starting location.

Pre registration is available via email and mail c/o the Checkpoint editor. While pre-registration is not required; one out of every eleven pre-registered teams wins post-rally food and beverages (up to $11 for each winning driver and $11 for each winning naviga- tor). Winners will be selected by random drawing on November 9th at 11 p.m. from the pre-registered entrants. (Entry fees do not oth- erwise include refreshments.)

When: Saturday, November 11, 2006. Drivers’ meeting at 12:51 p.m., first car out at 1:11pm. First car out is scheduled to finish before 3:11 p.m.

Where: starting location, Creekside Pub & Grille, 99th & Holmes, KC, MO

12 MEMBERSHIP INVOLVEMENT

To All Region Officers and Leaders,

At the National Championship Runoffs this year, we are making a special effort to get more SCCA members involved in our club. There are a few programs already in place (the Region Road Trip Chal- lenge for one) that has generated a lot of interest and some friendly competition among Regions. From my side of the fence, the SCCA Membership Hub will highlight many aspects of SCCA partici- pation. One of which is what we are calling the SCCA VIP Volunteer for a Day program. We will have a daily drawing, beginning Thursday, for two non-licensed SCCA members (Temporary Membership is included) to participate in a specialty of their choice “up close and personal.” The members will select which drawing they want to be part of, so hopefully we will have two winners per specialty per day. Now “participation” is loosely defined in that the intent is not to put a rookie on a corner, for example. The intent is to bring that person right to the hub of activity and merely be an observer in a position that won’t affect operation of the specialty. However, if the local area manager (Corner Captain, i.e.) feels the VIP is capable then I have no issue with allowing that person to perform rudimentary functions. All of the specialty NAs are in support of this program, and hopefully we can gain not only new re- cruits to the various ClubRacing specialties, but instill the enthusiasm needed for new memberships and a more activated membership. We will also award two SCCA renewals per day (eight total) of those that have entered the drawings. Please pass this on to your membership should they give some though to attending the Runoffs as spectators or fans. They can come to the SCCA Membership Hub beginning Thursday of Runoffs week for details! Thanks for supporting this effort, and I hope to see many of you either at the Runoffs, the Solo Na- tionals, the USRRC, or the National Challenge in Hastings!

SCCA Board Overturns 24 Runoffs Class Mandate for 2007; 25 Classes Means Touring 3 Will Race SCCA Staff Writers

Topeka Kan. (Sept. 12, 2006) – sports Car Club of America Inc.’s Board of Directors voted Monday night to rescind its 24-class limit for the 2007 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, thus allowing all 25 classes from 2006 to compete next year.

The vote came after considerable member feedback after Touring 3, a new SCCA class in 2006, did not make the cut with its 2006 participation numbers to qualify for the 2007 event.

“It was determined by the Board that there were extenuating circumstances for a couple of classes, no- tably Touring 3, which started from scratch in 2006,” SCCA Chairman of the Board Bob Introne said. “We will run 25 classes again in 2007, but will go forward with the 24-class format beginning in 2008.

“The Board recognizes that 24 classes is still the long-term solution for the Runoffs as an event. How- ever, due to the short notice of the criteria and T3’s infancy as a class, we believe the most fair way to progress into 2007 is with 25 classes.”

The 2006 National Championship Runoffs will take place Oct. 9-15 at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas. Dates for the 2007 event will be announced during that week.
