2008 Endurocross Solo by Jason Rogers This was the 3rd time we've held the annual Endurocross in recent years. If you haven't heard, an Endurocross is an autocross where the driver gets to make multiple course laps and is scored on the combined time. It offers more continuous seat time than a normal event and challenges drivers to stay ahead of the course mentally. It doesn't take much to get behind the 8-ball in one lap of a normal solo but it's a good deal harder to maintain focus and look ahead like you learn in Evolution driving schools when you have to go four in a row. In some cars you may even tire physically. I would have expected some of the latter in my normal drive, a manual steer Civic with a quick ratio steering rack, but it was half apart and on jackstands. So being without a ride I decided to be a car whore. This was a fine plan until Paul's ITA car broke in several places and then I put on a cone hitting clinic in someone else's STS Civic after running it out of gas. All I can say is it's hard to go back to street tires in the same car. I was rusty and had no feel for what the tires were doing and unfortunately this showed.

But a lot of other people had a lot more fun than I did. Paul Sherman took charge of the event at the last minute due to unexpected obligations for event planner Kevin Anderson. Paul had lots of help from the usual suspects, especially Guy Roberts, and things ran very smoothly, especially considering this event is run quite a bit differently than a standard one- lap solo. New this year was a 2-cone allowance to reduce the severity of downed cones on such a long run. We were also concerned about wind gusts knocking cones over. In a normal solo, if a driver approaches a downed cone that he/she did NOT knock over that driver is supposed to stop and point at the cone. This leads to a re-run if course workers and event control agree on the cause. You can probably see the problems this could create in a multiple lap event. I think the rule worked well in practice and we will probably repeat it for next year but that's up to the next year's event chairman.

The fastest driver of the day was Mike Herrick in his STS Civic (Note to self: Maybe there's nothing wrong with that car after all...) followed by Paul Sherman in his ITA road racing Neon before we noticed a broken engine mount limiter and a few bad wheel bearings. Scott Elliott in the Elliott's Brunton Stalker came in 3rd, followed by Dan Deener in his GS Mini Cooper S and Ryan Ostmeyer in the silver STS2 Miata.

Among the top four drivers only David Livingston Jr. Almost half the schedule happened between Aug. 3 and Sept. 1.
