Introduction
Introduction The subjects of ethnographies, it should never be forgotten, are always more interesting than their authors. —R.J. Smith (1990) In the autumn of 2016, I met with two Arrernte men, Shaun and Martin, who had flown from the remote township of Alice Springs, in the center of Australia, to meet with me at my office in the Melbourne Museum. The purpose of their visit was to discuss the potential return of sacred ritual objects to central Australia. I had known both of these men for a number of years, but Shaun and I had a particularly long association. We had worked together at an Aboriginal youth service in Alice Springs over a decade earlier, and as we struck up a friendship he had taken me on a hunting trip for kangaroo on his homelands at Arewengkwerte. Our paths had diverged over the years, but we had once again come together as professionals in the Indigenous museum and heritage sector. Shaun now worked as a researcher at the Strehlow Research Centre in Alice Springs, and I had returned to my home city of Melbourne where I worked in the museum’s Indigenous Cultures Department. Over a number of days, Shaun and I looked into the history of these sacred objects, with Shaun’s uncle Martin providing prudent counsel, pon- dering how they came to be in the possession of a museum 2,300 kilometers from their place of origin. Our research and discussions meandered along a path that eventually led us back to questions about the degree of agency exhibited by central Australian men in the production of collections such as this. -

Kimberley Land Council Submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission Inquiry into the Native Title Act: Issues Paper 45 General comment The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) is the native title representative body for the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The KLC is also a grass roots community organisation which has represented the interests of Kimberley Traditional Owners in their struggle for recognition of ownership of country since 1978. The KLC is cognisant of the limitations of the Native Title Act (NTA) in addressing the wrongs of the past and providing a clear pathway to economic, social and cultural independence for Aboriginal people in the future. The KLC strongly supports the review of the NTA by the Australian Law Reform Commission (Review) in the hope that it might provide an increased capacity for the NTA to address both past wrongs and the future needs and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The dispossession of country which occurred as a result of colonisation has had a profound and long lasting impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Country (land and sea) is centrally important to the cultural, social and familial lives of Aboriginal people, and its dispossession has had profound and continuing intergenerational effects. However, interests in land (and waters) is also a primary economic asset and its dispossession from Traditional Owners has prevented them from enjoying the benefits of its utilisation for economic purposes, and bestowed those benefits on others (in particular, in the Kimberley, pastoral, mining and tourism interests). The role of the NTA is to provide one mechanism for the original dispossession of country to be addressed, albeit imperfectly and subject to competing interests. -

It also considers the tradition of industrial song in Australia, and finds it as important a strand as the bush tradition. An interesting recent find of researcher Peter Knox is Melinda Kendall's 'The Colliers Strike Song', published in the Illawarra Mercury, October 3, 1885. Melinda Kendall, mother of the poet Henry, was a 19th-century Australian writer, pioneer and teacher. The Colliers' Strike Song Come all ye jolly colliers, and colliers' wives as well, And listen to my ditty, for the truth I mean to tell; It's of a colliers' wage dispute, is the burden of my song; I mean to cheer you up, if it won't detain you long. religions Article Ancient Egyptians in Black and White: ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and the Hamitic Hypothesis Justin Michael Reed Department of Biblical Studies, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY 40205, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this essay, I consider how the racial politics of Ridley Scott’s whitewashing of ancient Egypt in Exodus: Gods and Kings intersects with the Hamitic Hypothesis, a racial theory that asserts Black people’s inherent inferiority to other races and that civilization is the unique possession of the White race. First, I outline the historical development of the Hamitic Hypothesis. Then, I highlight instances in which some of the most respected White intellectuals from the late-seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century deploy the hypothesis in assertions that the ancient Egyptians were a race of dark-skinned Caucasians. By focusing on this detail, I demonstrate that prominent White scholars’ arguments in favor of their racial kinship with ancient Egyptians were frequently burdened with the insecure admission that these ancient Egyptian Caucasians sometimes resembled Negroes in certain respects—most frequently noted being skin color. In the concluding section of this essay, I use Scott’s film to point out that the success of the Hamitic Hypothesis in its racial discourse has transformed a racial perception of the ancient Egyptian from a dark-skinned Caucasian into a White person with appearance akin to Northern European White people. I first met Nick Drake when I arrived in London after attending the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1969, which featured as its curtain-closer a very different Bob Dylan to the one I had seen in Sydney in March 1966. However, on thinking about it, Dylan’s more scaled down eclectic country music approach - which he revealed for the first time - kind of prepared me for what I was about to experience in London. The day after I arrived at my temporary London lodgings with friends living in Warwick Avenue, I went to Les Cousins in Greek Street. -

(Tony Prescott) INTRODUCTION The popular image of the Manly ferry during the present century has very much evolved around the "class" (to use a naval term loosely) of six very similar double-ended screw steamers built for the Port Jackson Co-operative Steamship Co. Ltd. and the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Co. Ltd. between 1905 and 1922. These six steamers were to be eclipsed in size, speed, accommodation and glamour by the Scottish-built Dee Why and Curl Curl of 1928 (The Log, May 1977) and South Steyne of 1938 (The Log, August 1983, November 1983). However, the smaller boats were to prove more economically practical in the long-term and two of them, both to be described in this article, are still in service while the Scottish boats have been withdrawn. Up to the early years of this century, the Port Jackson company operated a fleet consisting almost entirely of paddle steamers. The reason for the relatively late transition to screw propulsion lay in the necessity of using double-ended ships due to the configuration of Sydney Harbour with its many coves and the difficulties of turning in the Circular Quay terminus. Smaller double-ended ferries had been found to operate quite successfully with screw propulsion, but the Manly service had speed and heavy weather requirements which necessitated fine bows on the ships. -

From Leipzig to Jerusalem: Erich Brauer, a Jewish Ethnographer in Search of a Field1
Naharaim 2014, 8(1): 91–119 Vered Madar, Dani Schrire From Leipzig to Jerusalem: Erich Brauer, a Jewish Ethnographer in Search of a Field1 Abstract: Erich Brauer (1895–1942) was born in Berlin, where he was active in the Jung Juda youth-movement. A talented graphic artist, he was trained as an ethnologist in Leipzig and is best known today for his ethnological studies done in Palestine, especially his monographs on the Jews of Yemen (published in German in 1934) and the Jews of Kurdistan (published in Hebrew in 1947 and in English in 1993). Brauer’s work is discussed in relation to his disciplin- ary habitus as a diffusionist ethnologist whose dissertation in Leipzig was de- voted to the religion of the Herero and what was then known as the “Hamitic Thesis.” This background helps explain his relation to “the field” in two senses – the site where ethnographic fieldwork is conducted and the disciplinary field of German ethnology (Völkerkunde). These two fields are inseparable from one another and are discussed in the context of the status of ethnographic disci- plines at The Hebrew University in Mandatory Palestine. Finally, the paper ex- amines historiographic issues relating to the fate of the communities Brauer studied, his own Zionist identity, and the way German ethnology was practiced during National Socialism.
