ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 8 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 5 KERALA STATE POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD KERALA STATE POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION PURPOSE The Kerala State Pollution Control Board was formed in 1974 for the prevention and control of water pollution. The Board expanded the horizon of its activities so as to cover the fields of air pollution, sound pollution and the overall environmental pollution management throughout the State. The control of pollution related to chemicals, hazardous wastes, waste generated during battery processing, bio-medical wastes, municipal solid wastes, e-wastes etc. comes under the activities of the Board. The following statutes are being administered by the State Pollution Control Board to prevent and control pollution of the environment. 1. The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 (Amended in 1988) 2. The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977 (Amended in 1991) 3. The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 (Amended in 1987) 4. The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 The Water and Air Acts provides for prevention and control of pollution and for promotion of wholesomeness of water, land and air.
