Abstract: A survey of the Thalassiosirales from three different regions of Guaratuba bay resulted in the identification of 28 infrageneric taxa. The samples were collected every three months from April 2007 to January 2008. The taxa were described and illustrated by optical. Some of them were illustrated by scanning electron micrographs. Taxonomic comments were added when relevant. Thalassiosira cedarkeyensis was first recorded to Brazil and two Thalassiosira ferelineata and T. minuscula were new citations to Parana state. Comparing the occurrence of Thalassiosirales representatives from 1961’s previous work 23 species were added to the flora. Based on literature informations, only four species were considered from freshwater habitat, Discostella stelligera, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Cyclostephanos invisitatus and Thalassiosira rudis, the others were marine or estuarine. Keywords: diatoms, taxonomy, estuary, Southern Brazil. LEHMKUHL, E.A., TREMARIN, P.I., MOREIRA-FILHO, H. & LUDWIG, T.A.V. A new species from the diatom genus Pliocaenicus Round & Håkansson is described from Yakutia (Eastern Siberia, Russia) as Pliocaenicus bolshetokoensis sp. nov., on the basis of light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is morphologically similar to other members of the genus but differs from the closely related species, Pliocaenicus costatus (Loginova, Lupikina & Khursevich) Flower, Ozornina & Kuzmina and Pliocaenicus seczkinae Stachura-Suchoples, Genkal & Khursevich, mainly by the position of the central fultoportulae and the valve face relief. Variability of quantitative features such as valve diameter, number of striae and areolae in 10 µm, and number of central fultoportulae are similar to data known from other centric genera. The most variable quantitative character of P. bolshetokoensis sp. nov. is valve diameter; the numbers of areolae and striae in 10 µm were less variable. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/0269249X.2018.1477690 Keywords diatoms, Lake Bolshoe Toko, Russia, new species, taxonomy, Pliocaenicus References [1] Flower R.J., Ozornina S.P., Kuzmina A., & Round F.E., 1998. This study assessed the diatom diversity from an urban reservoir with oligotrophic conditions. The Piraquara I reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area and is responsible for the public supply of Curitiba city and the metropolitan region. Samples were collected seasonally between October 2007 and August 2008. Periphytic samples were obtained by removing the biofilm attached to Polygonum hydropiperoides stems and to glass slides. The taxonomic study resulted in the identification of 87 diatom taxa. The most representative genera regarding the species richness were Pinnularia (15 species) and Eunotia (14 species).

Master’s thesis part 1: Evaluation of NEMO–PISCES v2 biogeochemical model with field data from a north-south gradient in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean Utrecht University Nomikos Skyllas Supervisors: prof. dr. Jack Middelburg (UU) prof. dr. Anita Buma (RUG) prof. dr. Richard Bintanja (KNMI - RUG) dr. Willem van de Poll (RUG) July 10, 2018 Abstract Global ocean biogeochemical models are powerful tools that help to study the carbon cycle and to predict its future climate and biogeochemical changes. Recently, the EC-Earth model was supplemented with the community ocean model NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) coupled to PISCES (Pelagic Interactions Scheme for Carbon and Ecosystem Studies). Yet, validation of model outcomes was urgently needed. It was the aim of the present study to validate EC-Earth runs using a dataset on water column physics, chemistry and phytoplankton biomass along a transect in the North Atlantic ocean. To this end the capability of the model to simulate vertical profiles of the aforementioned parameters along this transect was studied. During a first model run, water column characteristics were compared to depth field data for salinity, temperature, density, Chl a and nutrient concentrations. In a second run several NEMO- related physical parameters had been modified and the response of phytoplankton dynamics to the new conditions was investigated. At high latitudes, the first model run did not realistically predict Mixed Layer Depths (MLD). This resulted in a failure to predict the correct timing and magnitude of the phytoplankton spring bloom. In contrast, the ”sensitive” MLD criterion used by the model to work well at low latitudes.

Theriotia guizhoiana gen. & sp. nov. has striae across the valve face of varying lengths, and are composed of fine striae towards the margin and onto the mantle. Many round to stellate siliceous nodules cover the exterior of the valve. External fultoportulae opening are short tubes; the opening of the rimportula lacks a tube. Internally a hyaline rim is positioned near the margin.
