A new species from the diatom genus Pliocaenicus Round & Håkansson is described from Yakutia (Eastern Siberia, Russia) as Pliocaenicus bolshetokoensis sp. nov., on the basis of light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is morphologically similar to other members of the genus but differs from the closely related species, Pliocaenicus costatus (Loginova, Lupikina & Khursevich) Flower, Ozornina & Kuzmina and Pliocaenicus seczkinae Stachura-Suchoples, Genkal & Khursevich, mainly by the position of the central fultoportulae and the valve face relief. Variability of quantitative features such as valve diameter, number of striae and areolae in 10 µm, and number of central fultoportulae are similar to data known from other centric genera. This study assessed the diatom diversity from an urban reservoir with oligotrophic conditions. The Piraquara I reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area and is responsible for the public supply of Curitiba city and the metropolitan region. Samples were collected seasonally between October 2007 and August 2008. Periphytic samples were obtained by removing the biofilm attached to Polygonum hydropiperoides stems and to glass slides. The taxonomic study resulted in the identification of 87 diatom taxa. The most representative genera regarding the species richness were Pinnularia (15 species) and Eunotia (14 species). -

Theriotia guizhoiana gen. & sp. nov. has striae across the valve face of varying lengths, and are composed of fine striae towards the margin and onto the mantle. Many round to stellate siliceous nodules cover the exterior of the valve. External fultoportulae opening are short tubes; the opening of the rimportula lacks a tube. Internally a hyaline rim is positioned near the margin. -

BMC Evolutionary Biology 2011, 11:125 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/11/125 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access The model marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana likely descended from a freshwater ancestor in the genus Cyclotella Andrew J Alverson1*, Bánk Beszteri2, Matthew L Julius3 and Edward C Theriot4 Abstract Background: Publication of the first diatom genome, that of Thalassiosira pseudonana, established it as a model species for experimental and genomic studies of diatoms. Virtually every ensuing study has treated T. pseudonana as a marine diatom, with genomic and experimental data valued for their insights into the ecology and evolution of diatoms in the world’s oceans. Results: The natural distribution of T. pseudonana spans both marine and fresh waters, and phylogenetic analyses of morphological and molecular datasets show that, 1) T. pseudonana marks an early divergence in a major freshwater radiation by diatoms, and 2) as a species, T. pseudonana is likely ancestrally freshwater. Marine strains therefore represent recent recolonizations of higher salinity habitats. In addition, the combination of a relatively nondescript form and a convoluted taxonomic history has introduced some confusion about the identity of T. pseudonana and, by extension, its phylogeny and ecology. We resolve these issues and use phylogenetic criteria to show that T. pseudonana is more appropriately classified by its original name, Cyclotella nana. Cyclotella contains a mix of marine and freshwater species and so more accurately conveys the complexities of the phylogenetic and natural histories of T. pseudonana. Conclusions: The multitude of physical barriers that likely must be overcome for diatoms to successfully colonize freshwaters suggests that the physiological traits of T. -

Accepted: 28 November, 2013 ABSTRACT A taxonomic survey was carried out on Coscinodiscophyceae and Fragilariophyceae found in the Iguaçu River ca- tchment area within Iguaçu National Park, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Between September 2007 and August 2008, we collected 24 samples from two stations on the Iguaçu River, upstream and downstream of the falls. We identified 37 taxa, including 22 specific and infraspecific taxa of Coscinodiscophyceae, together with 15 specific and infraspe- cific taxa of Fragilariophyceae. Melosira ruttneri Hustedt and Fragilaria alpestris Krasske ex Hustedt represent new records for Brazil. HE UNDERSTANDING of the diversity and spatial distribution of cyanoprokaryotes and Talgae in Egypt is challenging because this is still an understudied topic. To address this knowledge gap, we discuss morphotaxonomic features and ecological preferences for ten cyanobacterial and algal morphospecies from diverse Egyptian biotopes. Morphospecies were studied and identified using state-of-the-art and fine-grained taxonomy based on light and scanning electron microscope observations. Of these taxa, the cyanoprokaryotes Lemmermanniella uliginosa and Scytonema myochrous, the freshwater diatoms Cyclotella meduanae, Cavinula lapidosa, and Craticula subminuscula, the unicellular chrysophyte Mallomonas crassisquama, and the worldwide rarely-recorded zygnematalean streptophyte Hallasia cf. reticulata are designated as new records for Egypt. Moreover, the latter and L. uliginosa are as well first records for the whole African continent. -
