Emily Dickinson's seclusion is explored in light of her family's strange entanglement with the Todds. Austin Dickinson's affair with Mabel Loomis Todd, and the effect on the lives of Susan Dickinson, Lavinia Dickinson, Martha Dickinson Bianchi, David Todd, and Millicent Todd Bingham, provide a steamy context for the posthumous publication of Emily Dickinson's poetry. The screenplay includes original music (inspired by the dashes and an old hymn) for two poems: "Wild Nightsl Wild Nights!" and "Better - than Music!" Also included are visualizations of many of Dickinson's images, including "circumference," "Eden," "the bee," and "immortality." Her new book, After Emily: Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America's Greatest Poet (Norton) was published at the end of October. The two women of the title are Mabel Loomis Todd and her daughter, Millicent Todd Bingham, Amherst residents who played a central role in the early publication of the work of Emily Dickinson. In this interview, Julie talks about the links between her book and the BAC, how seven years of research led to a deep understanding of her title characters, and the surprises she found in working through hundreds of archival boxes of letters and journals. Q: Congratulations on the publication of After Emily! My first question is probably a bit different than what you are typically asked about your new book. Could you explain the connection between Mabel Loomis Todd and the founding of the Boston Authors Club in 1899? Mabel was one of the founders of the BAC. In fact, the initial discussion about starting an organization for both male and female authors and literary folks in Boston actually happened in Amherst, in Mabel’s home. It was there that she, along with her friends, author May Alden Ward and Helen Winslow, one of the first female Boston newspaper reporters, discussed the idea for starting a club. -

Master of Arts (English), I May, 1973, 134 pp., 6 chapters, bibliography 45 titles. The purpose of this study is to seek out, examine, and analyze the relationship that Emily Dickinson shared with her sister, Lavinia, and with her sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert Dickinson. All of her letters and poems have been carefully considered, as well as the letters and diaries of friends and relatives who might shed light on the three women. The primary sources used in this study are Emily Dickin- son's poems and letters, and the personal accounts of people who knew the Dickinson family: Millicent Todd Bingham, Mabel Loomis Todd, and Martha Dickinson Bianchi. Also of great help were recent works of David Higgins, John Cody, and John Evangelist Walsh. The thesis is divided into six chapters, each centering upon Susan or Lavinia and their relationship with Emily. Chapter One traces Emily's attachment to her sister from childhood to death. It includes poems and notes written to or about Vinnie, referring to her cats, her frequent visits away from home, and her role as protector. Chapter Two 1 begins with Emily's early acceptance of Susan Gilbert, who eventually married Austin Dickinson. Emily's desire to remain on good terms with Sue can be seen in the poems sent to Sue that reveal dependency. -

However, her life and her own work also provide a case study of nineteenth-century women’s civic engagement. She was involved in a plethora of local and state organizations and utilized her artistic talents to champion many causes. Although some of her civic work occurred within traditional nineteenth century “women’s spheres,” her environmental activism pushed the boundaries and lay the groundwork for projects her daughter would later complete. This article examines Todd’s personal and professional motivations for civic work, contextualizing it within broader frames of nineteenth-century civic engagement and women’s social reform and club movements in Massachusetts. -

AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Emily M. Simpson for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Science presented on June 12, 2018. Title: Mars and Popular Astronomy, 1890-1910 Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________________________ Jacob D. Hamblin Beginning in the late-nineteenth century, several dialogues emerged concerning life on Mars. Some supported the notion of an inhabited Mars, citing recent observations of the planet, while others, pointing to a lack of concrete evidence, denied the validity of such a bold hypothesis. The dialogues within and between different groups focused on three primary topics: the existence of artificial canals on Mars, evaluation of scientific values, and methods to contact Mars from Earth. Scientists and science popularizers recognized the power of popular media to legitimate and perpetuate their interpretations of Mars and employed several tools to promote their ideas, especially when those ideas proved controversial. These methods were the use of environmental conditions as scientific authority, the creation of popular public identities, and promotion of the power of technology to discover hidden truths of the universe. Mars and Popular Astronomy draws upon resources in several manuscript and correspondence collections from archives housed at Lowell Observatory, Caltech, Huntington Library, and University of California, Santa Cruz. This study also relies on contemporary newspapers and popular magazines. When pieced together, these documents reveal the tactics that scientists and science popularizers used in their efforts to define, create, and control popular science. They also show how competing interests overlapped and how participants in the debates grappled with definitions of scientific authority and the parameters for responsibility and accountability in science communication.
