Donna Coates The Best Soldiers of All Unsung Heroines in Canadian Women's Great War Fictions If we keep on speaking the same language together, we're going to reproduce the same history. Begin the same old stories all over again. Listen: all around us, men and women sound just the same. The same discussions, the same arguments, the same scenes. The same distractions and separations. The same difficulties, the same impossi- bility of making connections. The same . Same . Always the same. LUCE IRIGARAY 205 In the 1950s, Desmond Pacey remarked that war writ- ing was the least examined area in Canadian literature, a comment still rele- vant today. To date, only one article on Great War fictions has appeared. Sweepingly titled "Canadian Fiction of the Great War," it sounds inclusive, but is not. Although Eric Thompson declares his intention to analyze war novels "which constitute the best fiction by Canadian writers about the experiences of Canadian fighting soldiers in the Great War of 1914-18" (81), he discusses only fictions by Peregrine Acland, Charles Yale Harrison, Philip Child, and contemporary writer Timothy Findley. In exclusively considering male writers, however, Thompson succumbs to traditional patriarchal criti- cism, which assumes that the weaponless are wordless, and that war is none of women's business; hence he ignores several of the "best" wartime writers such as Gertrude Arnold and L. M. Montgomery, whose novels also include (albeit peripherally) the experiences of Canadian fighting soldiers. Desire for Perpetuation: Fairy Writing and Re-creation of National Identity in the Narratives of Walter Scott, John Black, James Hogg and Andrew Lang Yuki Yoshino A Thesis Submitted to The University of Edinburgh for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Literature 2013 Abstract This thesis argues that ‘fairy writing’ in the nineteenth-century Scottish literature serves as a peculiar site which accommodates various, often ambiguous and subversive, responses to the processes of constructing new national identities occurring in, and outwith, post-union Scotland. It contends that a pathetic sense of loss, emptiness and absence, together with strong preoccupations with the land, and a desire to perpetuate the nation which has become state-less, commonly underpin the wide variety of fairy writings by Walter Scott, John Black, James Hogg and Andrew Lang. -

Victorian Fairy Painting, on view October 14, 1998 through January 17, 1999, represents the first comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to this distinctly British genre, which was critically and commercially popular from the early nineteenth century through the beginning of World War I. The paintings, works on paper, and objects, approximately thirty four in number, have been selected by Edgar Munhall, Curator of The Frick Collection, from the original, larger touring exhibition, which was organized by the University of Iowa Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Fairy painting brought together many opposing elements in the collective psyche and artistic sensibility of its time: rich subject-matter, an escape from the grim elements of an industrial society, an indulgence of new attitudes towards sex, a passion for the unknown, and a denial of the exactitude of photography. Drawing on literary inspiration from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, as well as the theater, the dance, and music, fairy painters exercised their magic with the precision of the Pre-Raphaelites, aided too by experiments with drugs and spiritualism. -

Ouida Bergère Also Known As: Eulalia Bergère, Ida Bergère, Mrs. George Fitzmaurice, Mrs. Basil Rathbone Lived: December 14, 1885 - November 29, 1974 Worked as: adapter, film actress, scenario editor, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Laura Jacquelyn Simmons Ouida Bergère was perhaps best known in the film industry as Mrs. Basil Rathbone and party hostess extraordinaire. However, before her marriage, to Rathbone, Bergère was a prominent and top paid scenario writer. Bergère was born in Spain, but moved to the US at the age of six. Her father was French-Spanish and her mother, British (Lowrey 1920, 22). There is some conflicting information regarding her birth name; most sources claim she was born Ida Bergère, others Eulalia Bergère. Regardless, upon entering the film industry, she changed her name to Ouida. Bergère began her film career by serving as scenario editor and actress for Pathé Freres, eventually writing her own scripts and branching out to other companies, including Vitagraph and Famous Players-Lasky, according to the New York Dramatic Mirror in 1915 (24). Much of Bergère’s screenwriting career coincides with the career of her second husband, George Fitzmaurice, to whom she was married before Rathbone. She met Fitzmaurice after she started her screenwriting career, and after their marriage, he directed almost all of the films she wrote. As is the case with the many Hollywood marriages, Bergère’s relationship to Fitzmaurice must be considered when discussing her career, and, typically, because her career was so closely linked to that of Fitzmaurice, there is confusion about their credits. She very well might have had her hand in directing some of the films that have been credited to him, as was the case with other couples such as actress Alice Terry and director Rex Ingram. -

Feminist Awakenings: Review of Essie Fox’s Elijah’s Mermaid and Stevie Davies’ Awakening Marie-Luise Kohlke (Swansea University, Wales, UK) Essie Fox, Elijah’s Mermaid London: Orion Books, 2012 ISBN: 978-1-40912-335-4, £12.99 (PB) Stevie Davies, Awakening Cardigan: Parthian, 2013 ISBN: 978-1-90894-698-0, £15.00 (HB) ***** From the outset, neo-Victorianism has been crucially concerned with gender issues, particularly the role of women and the historical discrimination and abuses perpetrated against them, regardless of whether the neo-Victorian novel’s beginnings are located in the 1960s with Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969) or pushed further back to Michael Sadleir’s Fanny by Gaslight (1940) and Marghanita Laski’s The Victorian Chaise-longue (1953). As such the neo-Victorian novel has been engaged in feminist consciousness-raising, whether directly or indirectly, both of its audience and its often outcast, persecuted, and exploited female characters. Perhaps fittingly – if never conclusively (witness Sadleir and Fowles) – historical fiction itself was once regarded as a peculiarly ‘feminine’ genre, both in terms of its writers and audience, something like the poor spinster cousin of the more ‘literary’ novel. In the last three decades, however, not least through the neo-Victorian efforts of such iconic women writers as A. S. Byatt and Sarah Waters, the genre has gone mainstream and firmly established itself at the heart of the cultural establishment.
