COMPARISON OF SWAMP FOREST AND PHRAGMITES AUSTRALIS COMMUNITIES AT MENTOR MARSH, MENTOR, OHIO A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Master of Science in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Jenica Poznik, B. S. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Master's Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Craig Davis, Advisor Dr. Peter Curtis Dr. Jeffery Reutter School of Natural Resources ABSTRACT Two intermixed plant communities within a single wetland were studied. The plant community of Mentor Marsh changed over a period of years beginning in the late 1950’s from an ash-elm-maple swamp forest to a wetland dominated by Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel. Causes cited for the dieback of the forest include salt intrusion from a salt fill near the marsh, influence of nutrient runoff from the upland community, and initially higher water levels in the marsh. The area studied contains a mixture of swamp forest and P. australis-dominated communities. Canopy cover was examined as a factor limiting the dominance of P. australis within the marsh. It was found that canopy openness below 7% posed a limitation to the dominance of P. australis where a continuous tree canopy was present. P. australis was also shown to reduce diversity at sites were it dominated, and canopy openness did not fully explain this reduction in diversity. Canopy cover, disturbance history, and other environmental factors play a role in the community composition and diversity. Possible factors to consider in restoring the marsh are discussed. FACT SHEET: GIANT REED Common Reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. Grass family (Poaceae) NATIVE RANGE Eurasia DESCRIPTION Common reed, or Phragmites, is a tall, perennial grass that can grow to over 15 feet in height. In North America, both native phragmites (Phragmites australis ssp. americanus Saltonstall, P.M. Peterson & Soreng) and introduced subspecies are found. Introduced Phragmites forms dense stands which include both live stems and standing dead stems from previous year’s growth. Leaves are elongate and typically 1-1.5 inches wide at their widest point. Flowers form bushy panicles in late July and August and are usually purple or golden in color. As seeds mature, the panicles begin to look “fluffy” due to the hairs on the seeds and they take on a grey sheen. Below ground, Phragmites forms a dense network of roots and rhizomes which can go down several feet in depth. The plant spreads horizontally by sending out rhizome runners which can grow 10 or more feet in a single growing season if conditions are optimal. Please see the table below for information on distinguishing betweeen native and introduced Phragmites. ECOLOGICAL THREAT Once introduced Phragmites invades a site it quickly can take over a marsh community, crowding out native plants, changing marsh hydrology, altering wildlife habitat, and increasing fire potential. Its high biomass blocks light to other plants and occupies all the growing space belowground so plant communities can turn into a Phragmites monoculture very quickly. Phragmites can spread both by seed dispersal and by vegetative spread via fragments of rhizomes that break off and are transported elsewhere. -

Report of the New York State Avian Records Committee for 2007
REPORT OF THE NEW YORK STATE AVIAN RECORDS COMMITTEE FOR 2007 The New York State Avian Records Committee (hereafter “NYSARC” or the “Committee”) reviewed 154 reports from 2007, involving 79 separate sightings, and an additional two reports from previous years. Reports were received from all over the state, with 31 of the 62 counties represented. The number of reports accompanied by photographs remains high. The Committee wishes to remind readers that reports submitted to eBird, listserves, local bird clubs, rare bird alerts (RBAs) and Kingbird Regional Editors are not necessarily forwarded to NYSARC, and doing so remains the responsibility of the observer. The growing use of the internet and mobile phones has had a very positive impact on the timely dissemination of rare bird sightings and has made it easier for birders to locate birds found by others. The Committee has always held that receipt of multiple independent reports provides a much fuller documentation of the sighting and can in some cases increase the likelihood of acceptance. We therefore urge ALL observers, not just the finder, to submit written reports and/or photographs. The names of the 83 contributors who submitted materials (written reports, photographs and sketches) are listed alongside accepted reports and again at the end of this document. Where possible, the name(s) of the original finder(s) is (are) included in the narratives. Production of this Annual Report is a team effort involving a large number of people. In addition to the contributors mentioned above, several Kingbird Regional Editors have made valued efforts in cajoling reluctant observers into preparing and submitting documentation. -
A Classification of the Rallidae
A CLASSIFICATION OF THE RALLIDAE STARRY L. OLSON HE family Rallidae, containing over 150 living or recently extinct species T and having one of the widest distributions of any family of terrestrial vertebrates, has, in proportion to its size and interest, received less study than perhaps any other major group of birds. The only two attempts at a classifi- cation of all of the recent rallid genera are those of Sharpe (1894) and Peters (1934). Although each of these lists has some merit, neither is satisfactory in reflecting relationships between the genera and both often separate closely related groups. In the past, no attempt has been made to identify the more primitive members of the Rallidae or to illuminate evolutionary trends in the family. Lists almost invariably begin with the genus Rdus which is actually one of the most specialized genera of the family and does not represent an ancestral or primitive stock. One of the difficulties of rallid taxonomy arises from the relative homo- geneity of the family, rails for the most part being rather generalized birds with few groups having morphological modifications that clearly define them. As a consequence, particularly well-marked genera have been elevated to subfamily rank on the basis of characters that in more diverse families would not be considered as significant. Another weakness of former classifications of the family arose from what Mayr (194933) referred to as the “instability of the morphology of rails.” This “instability of morphology,” while seeming to belie what I have just said about homogeneity, refers only to the characteristics associated with flightlessness-a condition that appears with great regularity in island rails and which has evolved many times. -

ON THE ORNITHOLOGY OF THE RHINO SANCTUARY UDJUNG KULON IN WEST JAVA (INDONESIA) by A. Hoogerwerfl Continued from Volume 23, Nos. 1 & 2, pp. 9-65. Family ANA TIDAE 70. CA/RINA SCUTULATA (Muller) White-winged Wood-Duck. This large duck is probably not a regular visitor to Java. The author has never seen it in the reserve, nor elsewhere. However, it was recorded in this area by the big-game hunter De Kanter who, in the beginning of the Thirties regularly visited Udjung Kulon to shoot tiger. In his September 1932 report he noted as a very rare event that on September 17, four" Manila ducks" (tame ducks rather similar to the present species) flew over his camp along the mouth of the Tjitelang. There is no other wild duck like those observed by De Kanter and this wood-duck is known to breed in south Sumatra, hence the species is included here. General remarks. This is the rarest duck in Java, but it is said that it is not exactly rare in certain parts of south Sumatra, where it is found in freshwater swamps and swampy forests far from the coast, and that it is diurnal in habits. Single birds and pairs are most usual. They roost on horizontal branches of high trees, often frequenting the same trees for months. Flying birds are said to utter a call like "tatta-tatta-tatta", repeated every 3 to 5 seconds and from feeding or roosting birds a weaker "tietieta-tietieta-tietieta" bas been heard. The nest is composed of dried leaves and other plant material -mixed with some down and it is placed in trees at a height of 3 to 8 metres, also in holes and hollows of big trees, or in forks or on tree stumps (Hoogerwerf 1950). -

In almost barren cold dessert of Spiti vally, Lossar village has little vegetation of shrubs, wild willow and Betula utilis Don commonly known as Himalayan Birch or Bhojpatra. A solitary Indian Pond-Heron was found feeding on insect larvae in this area. This is a new record of this bird from high altitude and this different but interesting migration pattern is opening the new vista of avian record from wetland and barren lands of Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Challenges presented by having to cross high mountain passes (such as the Trans Himalayas) and sudden onsets of inclement weather have always been part of migration in these high altitude areas. However, over the past two centuries migration has become even more difficult because of extensive habitat loss, fragmentation of remaining habitats and urbanization of the landscape. -
