Colonial Echo, 1911 0^^- 'Pith mm- Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from LYRASIS members and Sloan Foundation http://www.archive.org/details/colonialecho191113coll The Colonial Echo M CM XI PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF The College of William and Mary WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA I I (S r f r t i n g "Whoever thinks a faultless Annual to see. Thinks what ne'er was, nor is, nor e're shall be." In giving to the friends of our college, this our ninth volume of the Colonial Echo, we do so with a full knowledge of the fact that there are flaws, yea, serious flaws in our work. It has been our aim, however, to present to to our friends a picture of college life as it is today, and, perchance, recall some fond memories to the alumnus who may read. Had it not been for the aid and coop- eration of our friends, we should have been unable to publish this volume. As you glance over its pages, we would beg of you to be kindly toward its faults, and praise its virtues. Cl)c 1911 Colonial CrJjo The Library HE iie\v library of William and !Mary College was made possible by the kindness of Andrew Carnegie and other friends of the col- lege, and today we have a beautiful and comfortable home for the twenty thousand volumes which constitute the basis of that truly broadening education which has made this school famous. Here also is found a large collection of valuable portraits, painted by eminent artists, of the famous friends, patrons, and alumni of William and Mary. Among these may be found the faces of great statesmen, soldiers, and scien- tists,—men whose powers have guided the destinies of a great nation, and influenced events of vital importance to the entire world. In the exhibition cases are numerous relics and antiquities. It was at William and Mary that the Greek letter fraternity originated in America, and the original charter and minutes of Phi Beta Kappa are still preserved in the library. Rare books, yellow with age and replete with historic associations, are displayed in the reading room. The commodious stack-room contains the working library, easily accessible and carefully managed. Nowhere can the student find a more congenial atmosphere for study than in the library. Here, amid these pleasant and stimulating surroundings, Vir- ginia is building the foundations of her future greatness, and making more secure her position as a great and progressive Commonwealth. : Co a ^oiinn: !3[ltimiuis ©poll U)t)osE face tfje llgfjt of tfjt morning pet Stinesi, tufjose bision is unbimcb, Uiljose bigor tg still unbroken bp tljc pears ; to one tolio but latelp birnt from tfje lobe of tiis Sllma itlater to Stanb bjitfi Ijis face to tfje front in ttje laattle for tljc enligfjtment of Jllen to ^ulion aibin Carroll ClianDler iHaSter of arts of 1892 tljis Volume IS proublp bebitateb. And watched the wafted leaves from over head Fluttering a moment, fall at length to flake The breeze—blown ripples, as they came and fled. A moment these bowed at the giver's feet. Then lightly rolled, in whisperiug retreat. Bearing each frail bark toward the setting sun. And as 1 gazed, I felt the nameless Power Speaking, low-voiced, in lake and tree and flower. Like woodland melodies, where brooklets ruu. Strange was its cadence to my hardened ear. Dulled with the tumult of a grasping age Scarcely 'twas heard, yet wondrous sweet to hear. As lilts the lark, freed frinn eontining cage, So sang my soul, to feel the harness fall Which dragged it down, to cringe and creep and crawl As springs the silk-entomlied butterfly From its dark cell into the summer light, Seeking the sun which dissipates its night. So soared my fancy, free its wings to ply. 14 —: 'M-mi^M Cl)c 1911 Colonial €rljo s; Into file jmrrr light. \\iv taii-ci' day. Grown & Sexy. Not everyone was left convinced by Babyface's previous solo album, 2001's Face2Face. Many critics and fans found it to be a desperate act of some form, containing several stabs at with-it youthfulness that would've sounded out of character on his early albums with the Deele, not to mention something he put together almost 20 years later. He was either tired of doing the expected or was attempting to appeal to more than the thirty- and fortysomethings (or both). Those who were left disappointed by that album will probably be happy to have the Face of old back with Grown & Sexy, a back-to-basics album that sounds a lot more natural in comparison. While this is very familiar territory, few cover it as well. Written with longtime partner Daryl Simmons and produced with relative newcomer Gregg Pagani (LeAnn Rimes, Will Smith), Grown & Sexy doesn't have any songs that immediately jump out and fall in line with the biggest hits, but it does make up for that with its consistency.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song From Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970s Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC Bachelor of Music, University of Ottawa, 2005 Master of Arts, Music Theory, University of Western Ontario, 2007 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia May, 2014 © Copyright by Emily Margot Gale All Rights Reserved May 2014 For Ma with love iv ABSTRACT My dissertation examines the relationship between American popular song and “sentimentality.” While eighteenth-century discussions of sentimentality took it as a positive attribute in which feelings, “refined or elevated,” motivated the actions or dispositions of people, later texts often describe it pejoratively, as an “indulgence in superficial emotion.” This has led an entire corpus of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural production to be bracketed as “schmaltz” and derided as irrelevant by the academy. Their critics notwithstanding, sentimental songs have remained at the forefront of popular music production in the United States, where, as my project demonstrates, they have provided some of the country’s most visible and challenging constructions of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and morality. My project recovers the centrality of sentimentalism to American popular music and culture and rethinks our understandings of the relationships between music and the public sphere. In doing so, I add the dimension of sound to the extant discourse of sentimentalism, explore a longer history of popular music in the United States than is typical of most narratives within popular music studies, and offer a critical examination of music that—though wildly successful in its own day—has been all but ignored by scholars.

  • Amy Woodforde-Finden's Oriental Song-Cycles
AMY WOODFORDE-FINDEN’S ORIENTAL SONG-CYCLES by Michael Halliwell The ‘exotic Orient’ and its many variations was omnipresent in European culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From a British perspective the Orient could encompass almost anything south-east of Dover and extend to the Far East, but in general terms it usually stretched from Egypt to Japan, with the Indian subcontinent being a central focal point. There were two dominant aspects to this fascination: the Orient could have negative connotations, frequently suggesting an exotic, mysterious, even menacing unknown, or it might have an attractive allure, often embodying what was for late Victorian mores an unconstrained sexuality. This phenomenon was brilliantly illuminated by Edward Said in his book Orientalism, who notes that ‘the Orient was a place where one could look for sexual experience unobtainable in Europe’, maintaining that the Orient ‘still seems to suggest not only fecundity but sexual promise (and threat), untiring sensuality [and] unlimited desire’.1 Gerry Farrell notes that Americas, and from further aield: basically, if it’s good music and it hasn’t yet been recorded, the India of the romantic imagination is a place where actions take place that would be unthinkable back in middle England. […] this dangerous but appealing cultural ambience was just the thing to send girdled hearts racing within the safety of a parlour song.2 Aspects of both these perspectives of the orient were reflected in the popular music of this period, but it was the more enticing suggestions that frequently found their way into music, particularly popular songs, including those sung in the music halls as well as the art-song repertoire that was beginning to emerge in Britain, rather later than in the German-speaking lands.
