Mijn Ontmoeting Met Een Jeugdheld! Mijn ontmoeting met een jeugdheld! Als radiopresentator van ons wekelijkse programma Spotlight heb ik veel artiesten te gast die met name in de theaters staan. Zij hebben stuk voor stuk leuke en boeiende verhalen. Zo nu en dan verschijnt een artiestennaam in het programma van een theater die mijn hart nog harder doet kloppen. Het zijn vaak de namen waarvan je vroeger als jonge jongen dacht als ik hem of haar ooit eens zou kunnen ontmoeten? Begin maart 2016 had ik een ontmoeting in de artiestenfoyer van De Maagd met Graham Gouldman, gitarist en zanger van 10cc, de enige die nog uit de oorspronkelijke samenstelling van de band komt. Een zeer bijzonder moment. Het houdt niet op! Steve Harley staat aangekondigd op het programma van De Maagd. Op 25 januari treedt deze Engelse zanger op die feitelijk als Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice door het leven gaat. Vooral 50-plussers zullen hem wel kennen van zijn hits uit de jaren 70. Ik was al verkocht toen in 1973 het zeer bijzondere en prachtige Sebastian uitkwam. Als 13-jarige snelde ik naar de platenzaak voor het singeltje. Ik was al blij met de kortere versie die uit destijds armzalige boxjes klonk. Je zult begrijpen dat ik Steve graag in Spotlight wilde hebben. Manuela van zijn Nederlandse impressariaat wilt graag meewerken. Het concert is nog niet uitverkocht dus promotie is altijd welkom. En dan is het zover, keurig op tijd bel ik met Engeland alwaar de 67- jarige Steve Harley op mij zit te wachten. “It’s all my pleasure to be in your show”, reageert Steve met een zeer correct Engels. Steve Harley wordt als naam pas echt bekend wanneer hij in 1975 naar Hilversum komt voor het programma Toppop wanneer Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) in Nederland een hit wordt. Ik vertel hem dat ik zijn verschijning met zeer lange bordeauxrode jas en hoed op nog heel goed weet. Echter was hij al eerder in Nederland, voor Sebastian. De misvatting lijkt te ontstaan als je mocht denken dat Cockney Rebel de naam van een andere zanger is die ondermeer verantwoordelijk is voor Sebastian. Het is de naam van zijn begeleidingsband legt hij uit. Eerst hebben we onder deze naam (vanaf 1972) muziek uitgebracht. In 1975 was mijn begeleidingsband deels uitelkaar gevallen en kwamen nieuwe muzikanten voor mij werken en besloot ik om mijn naam ervoor te zetten: Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. De naam die je ook op het album “The Best Years Of Our Lives” ziet staan en waar je de toptienhit “Make Me Smile” op terugvindt. Dus inderdaad is de zwevende stem die je op Sebastian hoort inderdaad van Steve Harley. Voor mij is dit altijd één van de mooiste popklassiekers geweest. Op een 13- jarige als ik destijds maakte dit heel veel indruk. De tekst, de zangstem met effect maar zeker ook het orkest en koor dat heel veel toevoegt. Ik vraag Steve naar de “story behind Sebastian”. En wie is Sebastian? Dat laat ik aan ieder zijn of haar eigen fantasie over. “It’s pure poetry” voegt Steve toe. “Ik was nog maar 22 toen ik Sebastian schreef”, memoreert hij. Steve trad vanaf begin jaren 70 op als straatmuzikant, zoals bij de Londense metrostations. Toen zong hij Sebastian al in een akoestische vorm zonder “toeters en bellen” erop. Ik verdiende er nauwelijks iets mee zegt Harley. “Apparently not their cup of tea” lacht Steve. Eind 1972 werd Cockney Rebel geformeerd en kreeg de band een platencontract van EMI. Het eerste album “The Human Menagerie” kwam een jaar later uit met daarop, jawel Sebastian. Hoe is Sebastian zo prachtig geworden? “I was a very lucky guy in those days”, haalt Steve op. De poëtische tekst vond Neil Harrison, de producer geweldig maar ik wil het nummer meer body geven zei hij tegen Steve. “Neil gaf mij een blanco cheque om het nummer meer power te geven”, vervolgt Steve. Andrew Powell was dé man. Hij dirigeerde een orkest en maakte al meer prachtige muziek met ondermeer Alan Parsons project en produceerde jaren later het album “The Kick Inside” van Kate Bush. Andrew arrangeerde voor Sebastian de muziek die hij een 40 man tellend orkest liet spelen plus een koor bestaande uit 24 personen, in de befaamde Abbey Road studio! Steve: “I remember the moment I walked in the studio”. Ze lieten mij het eindsresultaat horen. Het was overweldigend. Zeven minuten lang! Ik heb toen zeker een paar traantjes gelaten. Ik was zo ontroerd, vertelt Steve verder. Steve kan niet ophouden met zingen. Het is zijn lust en zijn leven. Nog steeds heeft hij die prachtige stem. Hoe houdt je die zo goed is mijn vraag aan hem. Zorgen dat je jezelf nooit overzingt, reageert Steve direct. Door de tegenwoordige technieken heb je minder power nodig om goed te kunnen zingen. De microfoons maar ook de monitoren (en inears) zijn stukken beter. Je hoort jezelf uitstekend, legt Harley uit. Maar bovenal probeert hij de bacillen van anderen op afstand te houden. Hij geeft geen handen na shows, hoe goed bedoeld. Voordat je het weet heb je een verkoudheid te pakken en “the show must go on”. Aan het eind van het interview vraagt Steve mij om na afloop even elkaar te ontmoeten. Dat is natuurlijk super en daarop beloof ik dat ik eerst mijn handen was en je niet zal zoenen! Hilariteit ook bij Steve die deze grap zeker kan waarderen. Een mooi gesprek met de zanger van Sebastian, van Make Me Smile, van Judy Teen en Mr. Raffles, liedjes die ook op vrijdag 25 januari allemaal voorbij zullen komen, in theater De Maagd. Een regelrechte aanrader! Even na negenen, loop ik loop trots als een pauw de studio uit en zie nu al uit naar de voortzetting van deze nu al mooie ontmoeting, straks verder keuvelend onder het genot van een glas Chardonnay! Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

A friend who practises Buddhism, advised me some time ago to stop ‘projecting.’ I have found that advice really useful and try to put unnecessary worry to one side, in a ‘box’ in my mind. Cultivate optimism. Concentrate on the things you CAN do, rather than those you can’t. Focus on what you do well and try to steer from the negative. Optimists live longer and have better immune systems! Sometimes a moan does YOU good but does it do your listener any good? Keep the moaning to a minimum and try to leave them with a smile.

Nun erscheint das erfolgreichste Album des Enfant terrible des Glamrock in der Definitive Edition mit vier Special Recordings, einer kompletten CD mit bisher unveröffentlichten Song‐ Versionen und einem Live‐Konzert im Londoner Hammersmith Odeon aus dem Jahr 1975, das als Live‐CD (Audio) und DVD (Video) mit unterschiedlichen Tracklistings das exklusive Paket ergänzt. Nach The Human Menagerie (1973) und The Psychomodo (1974), die noch unter dem Namen Cockney Rebel erschienen, war The Best Years Of Our Lives das dritte Album Harleys. Bis auf Drummer Stuart Elliott hatte Harley aufgrund bandinterner Querelen den Rest der Band komplett ausgetauscht und firmierte nun unter STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL – ein Vorgang, den er mit dem Song Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) verarbeitete, der mit über 1 Million verkaufter Singles sein größter Hit wurde und in der Folge von Suzi Quatro, Duran Duran und Ersaure gecovert wurde. Produziert wurde Best Years Of Our Lives von niemand geringerem als der späteren Prog‐Rock‐Ikone Alan Parsons, auf dessen Album „I Robot“ Harley 1976 im Gegenzug einige Background‐Vocals übernahm. COCKNEY REBEL galten neben T. Rex, Gary Glitter, Mott The Hoople und Roxy Music als Hauptmotoren der Glamrock‐Szene, obwohl sie, ähnlich wie die New York Dolls, musikalisch und in der Attitüde bereits die später virulente New Wave vorbereiteten.

    Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

    American Family, Oriental Curiosity: The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S. Society Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joseph Andrew Orser Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, Adviser John Brooke Alan Gallay Copyright by Joseph Andrew Orser 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the cultural and social spaces that conjoined brothers Chang and Eng Bunker occupied, interrogating the insights their lives offer into nineteenth-century ideas of race, class, gender, and respectability. Chang and Eng were conjoined twins of Chinese descent whose stage name, the Siamese Twins, derived from the country of their birth. The brothers toured the United States as “Oriental” curiosities from 1829 to 1839, and then settled in North Carolina as farmers, becoming slaveholders, marrying white sisters, and eventually fathering twenty-one children between them. In 1849, the twins returned to touring, this time taking two daughters along with them; until their deaths in 1874, Chang and Eng exhibited themselves and their offspring, touring as the Siamese Twins and Children. Through promotional literature, personal correspondence, visual images and newspaper reports, this work traces the evolution of public discourse about the twins and their families, contributing to other considerations of the twins and the course of American Orientalism. This dissertation goes further, however, by introducing early Asian Americans to considerations of the turbulent terrain of class and respectability in the 1830s and 1840s; the increasingly divisive debates over slavery, nativism, and sectionalism; and the tensions of national reunion in the years following the Civil War.
