We wrote most days and that tune came from one lazy afternoon's messing about. I wrote the entire lyric on the flight home. Batt arranged and conducted the song's string quartet and also played keyboards on the track. The recording of the song inspired Batt to record extensively at his home and most of Katie Melua 's recordings have since been made there. InHarley had also started negotiating with various record labels over the release of a new studio album. In an online diary entry in September that year, Harley said: "Plans to further the recording career at in hand. Negotiations are taking place daily and constantly. I am determined that "A Friend for Life" will be available in the shops and on the radio in time for the next Spring band tour, with an album, God willing, in the can. No new studio album would materialise until 's The Quality of Mercy. In a January diary entry, Harley gave an update on the song's release:. It should, with a little luck and the efforts of a good plugger, start getting airplay around the country towards the end of February. I can't in all honestly seriously expect A Friend for Life hit record. It will not be released by EMI or Sony, but by a small independent label with a good heart and much belief in the product. But airplay will help sell tickets for concerts, anyway, and to play is my first love, of course. In DecemberCregan was interviewed for the fan site The Harley Fanzonewhere he spoke A Friend for Life his role as producer on the song: "We did "A Friend For Life" together which was a real change for me because suddenly instead of Steve being the producer, I was. I thought, "this could be strange" because he had always been the man in charge. Was he going to let go of the reins? How hard was that going to be? But it was fine - he obviously put his two cents in. When asked what song of his he felt was a "hidden gem" and that people should listen to, Harley replied: "Oh, that's a good question! A hidden gem? There's a song called "A Friend for Life", which I sang today. It touches people of a certain age. A lot of my audience are grandparents, 50s and 60s. It touches them. The single A Friend for Life two live tracks, "Safe" and "Loretta's Tale", both of which were recorded at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London, during Spring As Harley was happy with the original recording, no changes were made to the song when it was later included on The Quality of Mercy album in No music video was filmed to promote the single. The song was included in the band's set-list on their tour and has remained a regular feature at Harley's live shows A Friend for Life date. A Friend for Life live versions have been A Friend for Life officially, including on 's Acoustic and Pure: Live[16] 's Anytime! In a review of Anytime! Upon release, The Sunday Express said in a review of The Quality of Mercy album: "A genuine Seventies pop maverick, Harley has evolved into a highly-literate and intimate balladeer. Carol Clerk of Classic Rock commented: " The Quality of Mercy is brimful of songs that are intensely personal and sometimes harrowing but, musically, very approachable. Here, Harley surveys his reality as a middle-aged father hoping his year marriage will A Friend for Life the empty- nest crisis. Still, the bright up-tempos of "The Last Goodbye" and the lovely, gentle melodies that carry "Journey's End A Father's Promise " and "A Friend for Life" offset the deep anxieties at the heart of the lyrics. In a review of the band's concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in Maythe Liverpool Echo commented that the song was "one of [Harley's] most beautiful heart-felt ballads". As a friend of Harley's for many years, Stewart had described him as "one of the finest lyricists the UK has ever produced". He loves the song but said: "I don't like that line about "The cats, I'll feed yer cats No matter. After Stewart recorded the song for Another CountryHarley first revealed that an "international superstar" had recorded one of his songs in a June diary entry. He added: "I believe totally that you A Friend for Life love it. I have it the superstar sent me a file by email and it is, for me, a beautiful reading of a slightly complex lyric. That's why the superstar is a superstar, I guess. After Walker suggested playing "A Friend for Life" as the closing track A Friend for Life the show, Stewart replied: "Yeah, I'd A Friend for Life you to play that. Steve Harley - one of the most underrated songwriters, good old Steve. Just a bit! Rod really nails it in his old soul voice. Good A Friend for Life Rod. Speaking to The Leader in NovemberHarley spoke again of Stewart's version: "Rod's one of the great song writers. I offered it to him over 10 years ago and he didn't get it, but now he's had these two lovely boys with Penny Lancaster and he gets it because it's a difficult lyric about children growing up and leaving the nest. I thanked him by buying him a fish supper A Friend for Life a very expensive A Friend for Life in Mayfair. Harley often jokes at his live concerts that the reason that Stewart covered the track was because '[Stewart] heard Steve needed a new roof on his house', in reference to the royalties that Stewart's cover would have created for Harley. • The Best Years of Our Lives- Definitive Edition Steve Harleys Hit-Album Mit Massenweise Bonusmaterial Dreifach-CD Mit Live-DVD

A thriving, though constantly harassed and destabilised, clandestine gay “scene” has developed in Havana.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

  • The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S
American Family, Oriental Curiosity: The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S. Society Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joseph Andrew Orser Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, Adviser John Brooke Alan Gallay Copyright by Joseph Andrew Orser 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the cultural and social spaces that conjoined brothers Chang and Eng Bunker occupied, interrogating the insights their lives offer into nineteenth-century ideas of race, class, gender, and respectability. Chang and Eng were conjoined twins of Chinese descent whose stage name, the Siamese Twins, derived from the country of their birth. The brothers toured the United States as “Oriental” curiosities from 1829 to 1839, and then settled in North Carolina as farmers, becoming slaveholders, marrying white sisters, and eventually fathering twenty-one children between them. In 1849, the twins returned to touring, this time taking two daughters along with them; until their deaths in 1874, Chang and Eng exhibited themselves and their offspring, touring as the Siamese Twins and Children. Through promotional literature, personal correspondence, visual images and newspaper reports, this work traces the evolution of public discourse about the twins and their families, contributing to other considerations of the twins and the course of American Orientalism. This dissertation goes further, however, by introducing early Asian Americans to considerations of the turbulent terrain of class and respectability in the 1830s and 1840s; the increasingly divisive debates over slavery, nativism, and sectionalism; and the tensions of national reunion in the years following the Civil War.
