As the Birth Approaches, Toni Has to Begin Making Room In AS THE BIRTH APPROACHES, TONI HAS TO BEGIN MAKING ROOM IN HER LIFE, AND HER APARTMENT, FOR THE BABY; LYNN HAS A SURPRISE ARRIVAL OF HER OWN, WHEN HER STEPBROTHER COMES TO TOWN Tricky, god-father of trip-hop, guest stars “GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS” #110---Joan helps Toni come to terms with the changes that will happen when the baby arrives. Lynn’s stepbrother comes to town and announces his plans to break into the music business, on GIRLFRIENDS, Monday, March 21, 2005 (9:00-9:30PM ET/PT) on the UPN Network. Sheldon Epps directed the episode written by Shauna Robinson. Tricky, famed trip-hop musician, guest stars as Finn Robinson, the lead member of a band who is looking for a new lead singer. Tricky is well known in England for his musical talents and his fan base has followed him to the US. Working as both a musician and a producer in this emerging musical genre, Tricky has been referred to as the god-father of trip-hop. When Lynn’s stepbrother comes to town after leaving his parent’s home, he is convinced that he can make it in the music business. Being a supportive sister, Lynn goes with him to an audition where he freezes up and is unable to perform. Lynn tries to come to his rescue, but only ends up over shadowing him with her impromptu performance. Finn, the bands leader, likes what he sees and hears and offers Lynn her brother’s dream job. As a side effect of the pregnancy, Toni’s feet expand causing her to wear flat shoes and give up her collection of high-priced, beloved heels. An even bigger side effect of the pregnancy is that she has to rearrange her apartment to make room for the baby. Toni resists the changes in her life until Joan makes it clear to her what she needs to do. Unwilling to give up her precious, walk-in closet, Toni moves into the tiny space and makes her bedroom the nursery. CAST GUEST STARRING Joan Clayton ................... May 6, 2010 v Abstract Girlfriends: The (In)visibility of Black Women on Television Dominique Victoria Harrison, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2010 Supervisor: Jennifer Fuller While Black women are more visible in media and popular culture today, the range of their visibility remains narrow and in continuation within the dominant ideology concerning Black women in the U.S. The images that are presented discourage a full understanding of the conditions of the Black female experience and the ways these women are socially constituted within it (Newton & Rosenfelt, 1985).

ABTRACT AFRICANA WOMEN'S STUDIES WILBURN, SHENETHA L. B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view. • Common New Girlfriend
Common new girlfriend Continue On July 29, Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights to seven black-led sitcoms and would roll out those shows starting Aug. Among the sitcoms making a comeback is CW's Girlfriends. From 2000-2008, Girlfriends was one of the highest-rated scripted shows on television among African-American adults. The show was followed by friends, Joan, Mia, Tony and Lynn, as they tried to navigate adulthood. Now that groundbreaking series will soon be available to stream on Netflix, we wonder what the cast has been up to since the show went on the air? The cast of Girlfriends: Jill Jones, Trace Ellis Ross, Persia White, and Golden Brooks Jean-Paul Aussenard/WireImage Tracee Ellis Ross During the eight- season run of the show Trace Ellis Ross played Joan Clayton, a career lawyer who many considered the unofficial den-mother of his group of friends. While Girlfriends was not Ross's first acting project, it certainly soared its fame to new heights and set the standard for its future in the entertainment industry. After the show ended in 2008, Ross starred in several television series, including Private Practice, Bad Girls and CSI. She also landed a starring role in the BET comedy Reed between the lines, but only did one season. Then, in 2014, Ross was cast as Dr. Rainbow Johnson in the hit ABC sitcom Black-ish. Today she still stars as a female lead on the show and has earned countless awards and nominations for her portrayal. RELATED: Tracee Ellis Ross is reportedly the new guy and he's someone from Black-ish In 2020 Ross starred as Grace Davis, the legendary superstar singer, in the musical comedy-drama film High Note.
