Of all the details we remember from our history and the one so prevalent in even the secular world is the sparks of a candle lasting eight whole days. It seems that today, December 2020, people once again need to muster a larger spark than ever before. These sparks are not just candles, although in the winter months we certainly could use more light, but the internal spark to keep going and remaining positive. Hannah Senesh, beloved Jewish poet, wrote of Rabbi Jeremy Fine Hanukkah: “Blessed is the match consumed in 651-252-6412 kindling flame. Blessed is the flame that burns in Email: the secret vastness of the heart.” Hanukkah is as [email protected] much about the burning of candles as it is the Twitter: @RabbiJeremyFine ignition of the Jewish spirit. Of course, we consume sufganiyot and become consumers of products and presents, but it is the joy and smiles that make Hanukkah so special. The reaction of a child opening a present, the generational cooking of latkes, and the marveling as a family at the glow of the candlelight. As the staff continues to search for opportunities to connect us, and as seen last month with Kosherfest, December will tap into the nostalgia of our community. -

As a result, history represents the values, ideologies, and most importantly for this dissertation, the remembrances of the victorious. Their remembrances never remain ethereal or disembodied; they become the object lessons about the past for those living in the present. And these object lessons, the lessons of history, become the narratives and locations that transmit a nation’s idealized values and origin stories. It is in this confluence of remembrances, object lessons, values and origin stories that this dissertation examines in the Alamo. The Alamo represents a consummate site of memory for the United States. As a cultural narrative it persists from a mid-nineteenth century battlefield through the present day as a cinematic narrative. The Alamo is one of the historical watershed moments of the Westward expansion. However, the tales of the victors (ironically, in this case, the victors at the Alamo are the Euro- Americans who died in the battle) transmit values, lessons and stories steeped in narratives of denial. -

ABTRACT AFRICANA WOMEN'S STUDIES WILBURN, SHENETHA L. B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view.
