OFC/NFOEC 2011 Archive Technical Conference: March 6-10, 2011 Exposition: March 8-10, 2011 Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA At OFC/NFOEC 2011, the optical communications industry was buzzing with the sounds of a larger exhibit hall, expanded programming, product innovations, cutting-edge research presentations, and increased attendance March 6 - 10 in Los Angeles. The exhibit hall grew by 20 percent over last year, featuring new programming for service providers and data center operators, and more exhibitors filling a larger space, alongside its core show floor programs and activities. OFC/NFOEC also featured expanded program offerings in the areas of high-speed data communications, optical internetworking, wireless backhaul and supercomputing for its 2011 conference and exhibition. This new content and more was featured in standing-room only programs such as the Optical Business Forum, Ethernet Alliance Program, Optical Internetworking Forum Program, Green Touch Panel Session, a special symposium on Meeting the Computercom Challenge and more. Flagship programs Market Watch and the Service Provider Summit also featured topics on data centers, wireless, 100G, and optical networking. Hundreds of educational workshops, short courses, tutorial sessions and invited talks at OFC/NFOEC covered hot topics such as datacom, FTTx/in-home, wireless backhaul, next generation data transfer technology, 100G, coherent, and photonic integration. -

Email: [email protected] 2 Finance Division, Piraeus Bank Group, Headquarters, Stadiou & Amerikis 4, Athens, 10557, Greece Abstract GEC/Marconi’s transformation from a diversified conglomerate to a focused telecommunications and information technology company was an eventful and rambling transmission that resulted in the deterioration of shareholders’ value. It represents one of the most dramatic falls from grace in British corporate history and one of the greatest corporate governance fiascos of all time. The study investigates the wealth effects of Marconi’s sell-offs and acquisitions on its shareholders’ value by calculating the abnormal returns on the announcement days of all the disposals/acquisition during 1996-2002. The results support the view that shareholders’ value increases when a company proceeds to corporate sell-offs to pursue a focus strategy. However, the authors conjecture that GEC/Marconi has destroyed shareholders’ value through these disposals/acquisitions because of several mistakes, such as being prone to heavy debt. © 2007 World Research Organization. That raises a number of challenges for carriers, which are beginning to rethink their network infrastructures to address the heightened bandwidth requirements of services like IPTV and HDTV. Not only do they need to ramp up bandwidth to run these services, but they need to control the quality of user experience. At the same time, they need to devise strategies for supporting legacy, circuit-based services over new packet-based access infrastructure. And all this needs to happen in a way that permits the technology to be deployed and changed easily, cheaply, and rapidly. The telecom operators and their suppliers are addressing these challenges by developing new technologies such IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), carrier-class Ethernet, and pseudowire encapsulation. They're also working together in associations such as the DSL Forum to establish new standards and architectures. And all of this is resulting in a plethora of new products hitting the market -- a market that represents a huge opportunity for vendors. It's sometimes said that for every dollar carriers spend in the core of their networks they spend $10 on metro equipment and $100 on access networking. Broadband access is evolving at a rapid rate as subscriber rates around the world continue to soar. -

Number 20 M Marconi Veterans January 2018 Association Newsletter Marconi Veterans’ President for 2018-Martyn Clarke Peter Turrall, Chairman Marconi Veterans’ Association January 2018 he Marconi Veterans’ annual reunion on 21st April 2018 at the old Marconi Club site in TBeehive Lane Chelmsford will see the introduction of a well-known ex-Marconi stalwart as president of our association -Martyn Clarke- who has been with the Marconi Company since he joined as an apprentice many years ago. We welcome Martyn and his nominated guest of honour Dr Paul Marshall-also an ex Marconi engineer, together with Paul’s wife Jill. Martyn is known for his engineering capabilities whilst with Marconi Communication Systems where he travelled to many places throughout the world demonstrating the Broadcasting Division’s studio equipment including cameras, mixers and outside broadcast vehicles. Martyn can relate some very interesting stories of his visits and the events and problems faced ensuring the Marconi equipment operated to the best of its ability. Many times he met important people including royalty in demonstrating Marconi products. No doubt we will hear some of his stories at the reunion. Martyn is a very popular veteran and even today, he, together with other ex colleagues, every Monday is at the Chelmsford city industrial museum at Sandford Mill Chelmsford either updating or repairing Marconi studio equipments which at many times throughout the year is demonstrated to the general public. Please come and support Martyn at our annual reunion on 21st April. Our veterans committee have agreed a very reasonable cost for the three course meal and we are looking for a record attendance. -
