OFC/NFOEC 2011 Program Archive OFC/NFOEC 2011 Archive Technical Conference: March 6-10, 2011 Exposition: March 8-10, 2011 Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA At OFC/NFOEC 2011, the optical communications industry was buzzing with the sounds of a larger exhibit hall, expanded programming, product innovations, cutting-edge research presentations, and increased attendance March 6 - 10 in Los Angeles. The exhibit hall grew by 20 percent over last year, featuring new programming for service providers and data center operators, and more exhibitors filling a larger space, alongside its core show floor programs and activities. The more than 500 companies in the exhibition hall showcased innovations in areas such as 100G, tunable XFPs, metro networking, Photonic Integrated Circuits, and more. On hand to demonstrate where the industry is headed were network and test equipment vendors, sub-system and component manufacturers, as well as software, fiber cable and specialty fiber manufacturers. Service providers and enterprises were there to get the latest information on building or upgrading networks or datacenters. OFC/NFOEC also featured expanded program offerings in the areas of high-speed data communications, optical internetworking, wireless backhaul and supercomputing for its 2011 conference and exhibition. This new content and more was featured in standing-room only programs such as the Optical Business Forum, Ethernet Alliance Program, Optical Internetworking Forum Program, Green Touch Panel Session, a special symposium on Meeting the Computercom Challenge and more. Flagship programs Market Watch and the Service Provider Summit also featured topics on data centers, wireless, 100G, and optical networking. Hundreds of educational workshops, short courses, tutorial sessions and invited talks at OFC/NFOEC covered hot topics such as datacom, FTTx/in-home, wireless backhaul, next generation data transfer technology, 100G, coherent, and photonic integration. Technical presentations were given on timely topics such as cloud computing, data center processing, multiplexing and record data rates of more than 1 Terabit per second. Leading off the keynote presentations at the Plenary Session was Bruno Orth, Senior Vice President, Strategy and Architecture at Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Orth spoke on how innovation, convergence and scalability in volume and cost of networks will enable DT to prepare its business for the future. AT&T's Senior Vice President of Architecture & Planning Kristin Rinne discussed the company's efforts to deploy the next generation, high-efficiency mobility network known as LTE. Alan Gara of IBM rounded out the talks with a look at high- performance computing and how optics will be a key component in the race to develop the world's fastest supercomputer for applications as diverse as smart grid operability and climate modeling to whole organ simulation and pandemic prevention. As the only conference and exhibition in 2011 that offers programming for all sectors of the telecom field, OFC/NFOEC proved to be the premier destination to stay up-to-date on the industry. With an increase in attendance to 11,100, OFC/NFOEC remains the largest show of its kind in the world.     CLEO/QELS 2006 Technical Conference: May 21-26, 2006 Exposition: May 23-25, 2006 Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, CA, USA CLEO/QELS & PhAST 2006 once again reiterated their roles as the leading events for the fields of lasers, electro-optics and photonics. With more than 1,500 talks on the latest breakthroughs in research and applications, these conferences are the source of the most timely and innovative new developments for the industry. Consistent with previous year's shows, attendance reached 5,200. Technical attendance was strong at more than 2,500 and exhibit walk-in traffic remained steady with 2005. The CLEO exhibition showcased 358 participating companies this year, with almost a 100 percent increase in corporate sponsor participation. The show really is an international must- attend event, with approximately 25% of companies coming from outside the United States. There also were exciting new programs and topics introduced at the 2006 event. The PhAST conference established the PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award which recognizes a company who has developed one of the most promising new products in the field. This year, Daylight Solutions won for its submission, "Commercializing the Mid-IR" and four honorable mentions were given to Thorlabs, Sacher Lasertechnik, Fianium and PolarOnyx. CLEO also launched the Terahertz Technologies and Applications subcommittee, a new topic area developed due to a consistent increase in papers in this area over the last few meetings.     Boston University Photonics Center Annual Report | 2015 Letter from the Director THIS ANNUAL REPORT summarizes activities of the Boston University Photonics Center in the 2014–2015 academic year. In it, you will find quantitative and descrip- tive information regarding our photonics programs in education, interdisciplinary research, business innovation, and technology development. Located at the heart of Boston University’s large urban campus, the Photonics Center is an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, scholarship, innovation, and tech- nology development associated with practical uses of light. Our iconic building houses world-class research facilities and shared laboratories dedicated to photonics research, and sustains the work of 46 faculty members, 10 staff members, and more than 100 grad- uate students and postdoctoral fellows. This has been a good year for the Photonics Center. In the following pages, you will see that the center’s faculty received prodigious honors and awards, generated more than 100 notable scholarly publications in the leading journals in our field, and attracted $18.6M in new research grants/contracts. Faculty and staff also expanded their efforts in education and training, and were awarded two new National Science Foundation– sponsored sites for Research Experiences for Undergraduates and for Teachers. It represents one of the most dramatic falls from grace in British corporate history and one of the greatest corporate governance fiascos of all time. The study investigates the wealth effects of Marconi’s sell-offs and acquisitions on its shareholders’ value by calculating the abnormal returns on the announcement days of all the disposals/acquisition during 1996-2002. The results support the view that shareholders’ value increases when a company proceeds to corporate sell-offs to pursue a focus strategy. However, the authors conjecture that GEC/Marconi has destroyed shareholders’ value through these disposals/acquisitions because of several mistakes, such as being prone to heavy debt. © 2007 World Research Organization.     OFC/NFOEC 2012 Archive Technical Conference: March 4-8, 2012 Exposition: March 6-10, 2012 Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA The optical communications industry’s leading event wrapped up last week in Los Angeles with increased attendance, a larger show floor and plenty of buzz and enthusiasm surrounding the innovations presented in the technical sessions. Nearly 800 technical presentations covered topics such as an elastic optical network for enabling terabit speeds, a graphene-based optical modulator, a record-speed wireless data bridge, and optical interconnects for enabling future computers. The popular post-deadline paper session, which saw a spike of 25% more submissions this year, featured the most timely breakthroughs in the research field – including a record 405 Terabit/s transmission speed demonstrated by a team of researchers in Japan. OFC/NFOEC’s most well-attended program, the Plenary and Awards Session, featured three high-level speakers on three unique topics. Isao Sugino, R&D director in Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications gave a comprehensive overview the devastation caused to the telecommunication networks in Japan after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, as well as a look at what Japan is doing to protect its ICT infrastructure against future disasters. Greg Papadopoulos, venture partner with New Enterprise Associates and former CTO of Sun Microsystems, spoke on exa-scale computing and what it means for the optics industry. Google’s Vice President of Access Networks, Milo Medin, spoke on the current “age of abundance” and what that means for bandwidth, network speeds, and consumer demand.
