ISSUE 3 I TERM 1 I WEEK 10A I 2017

Visual Arts Excursion to the Gallery of Modern Art

All of Year 7 & 8 and elective Visual Arts and Photography students were invited to attend the Visual Arts excursion to the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane recently. The early start and late finish for the day did not deter 49 students from taking the opportunity to travel to Brisbane to view Sugar Spin, an exhibition celebrating the 10th birthday of GOMA. Sugar Spin is a fun exhibition that features more than 250 contemporary artworks and includes many interactive displays. Students enjoyed sliding on the metal slide from the top floor to ground level. The slide is by artist Carsten Holler, a former biologist who creates works to make scientific and philosophical experiments with the aim of reshaping expectations about art. There was an interactive piece by artist Olafur Eliasson where students could play with thousands of white lego blocks to build their own city. (Continued on page 2) Students could stroke a furry wall made of soft fluorescent coloured synthetic hair by artists Hrafnhildur Arnardottir. The hair covered a large section of wall and cascaded down and over various shapes to the floor. A work by Celeste Boursier-Mougenot allowed students to enter a room filled with three different species of live finches who flittered around three wire sculptures that made sounds when the birds landed on them. These were just a few of the engaging works to be seen and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, gathering from the comments I had during the day and at school in the days after the excursion. While Year 12 Visual Arts students were casting a more critical eye over the exhibition as part of a compulsory case study, they too had lots of fun. A special mention must go to several senior students who, after returning to school at 6.45pm, proceeded to the hall and assisted with the Open Night for prospective 2018 Yr 7 students. They conducted tour groups around classrooms and were wonderful ambassadors for Lismore High Campus. Also many thanks to Mrs George and Leonie Claydon who assisted with supervision during the excursion and helped make the day possible. Ms Myles Visual Arts Teacher

NAPLAN 9-11 May P & C

Yr 7 Vaccinations Last month we held our P and C Annual General Meeting. There 15 May were few changes to the committee with myself, Nadine Toniello, being re-elected as the President. Michelle Simpson was re- elected as Vice President, with Suzie Thompson continuing the Secretary role and Carolyn Lindwall as our Treasurer. P&C Meeting 1st Monday of 2017 looks like a much quieter year compared to 2016. The each month uniform policy has been endorsed by the P and C and the gradual implementation of these changes are underway. It is exciting to see so many students wearing the new school uniform proudly with many positive comments being heard in the community. I would like to thank everyone who supported the P and C throughout 2016, including those on the committee, parents and carers who attend monthly meetings, the staff of Lismore High, and Nigel and Chris. Thank you for your commitment, support and friendship. LISMORE HIGH CAMPUS All parents and carers are invited to attend P and C meetings which are held the first Monday of the month at 6pm at the school. Dalley Street, Lismore NSW 2480 Meetings are a great way to stay in contact with the school and hear what exciting things are happening. We would like to respectfully acknowledge the Elders past and present of the Wijabul Wiyabal people and other peoples of Bundjalung Nation. We acknowledge that they are the first peoples of this land on which our school stands. 4 Principal’s Report

The Nesbitt Award has been a long standing award at Lismore High Campus, however for the past number of years, it has not been awarded at the school. The trust which manages the award has been undergoing a review of the conditions of the award and has had to change the conditions of the award to ensure that the award applies to the equity and anti-discrimination policies of the NSW Department of Education. The changes for the award have been approved by the NSW Attorney General and will be going for final approval before the NSW Supreme Court in June this year. The new structure will be: Monetary scholarships for: Year 7 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 8 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 9 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 10 Top (male and female student) (approx.$5000 - $10000+ spread over 2 years each) Year 11 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 12 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) The amounts indicated are approximations only, and are dependent on how much the trust earns in the year. The determination of the top students will be done through specific academic testing. You will notice the substantial award for students in Year 10 will be awarded to both a male and a female student. This is due to the specific request of the Nesbitt award, which has been maintained after the changes. More information will be released later in the year and hopefully we can commence awarding the scholarships. The return of the award to Lismore High Campus will be a great asset to the school and reward our students striving for academic success. Mr Nigel Brito Principal

5 Deputy Principal’s Report It has been a busy term and the holidays are now in sight. Students are reminded that lessons run as normal until the holidays start and parents are encouraged to go through assessment schedules (Years 9-12) with their children to assist them in planning for these tasks into Term Two. It is also a good opportunity for parents to look through student workbooks to review their progress. All pages should include: dates, margins, headings underlined, worksheets glued in and drawings in lead pencil. Year 12 students are wished well as they begin their half yearly examinations this week. Whilst students are not expected to be at school during the examination period outside of examinations times, the senior study room is available and staff are always happy to assist if advance notice is given. Students are expected to be in full school uniform and adhere to the examination procedures. If this period is the only time you observe your student studying over the year, it would be beneficial to discuss “cramming” versus deep knowledge that is learnt over an extended period of time. Year 12 students should be completing at least 2-3 hours revision every day in addition to assessments and homework throughout the year. Unfortunately, a number of students are hindering their chances for success in the HSC by spending much of their outside school time in employment. A casual job in excess of 10 hours per week in addition to studies is not advisable. Nigel and I have made it very clear to students that bullying and harassment will not be tolerated in our school and the school’s discipline and anti-bullying policies will be followed up in relation to incidents. Being abusive or retaliating with physical aggression will be treated the same as initiating the harassment. Parents can assist the school by discussing appropriate strategies with their children around responding to bullying. 1. Advise the harasser that you would like them to stop. Often students say nothing or respond with something equally as offensive. 2. In the second instance, place your palm forwards in a stop gesture (step back as you do this) and firmly tell the person to stop and get out of your personal space or you will report the incident to a teacher. 3. If there is a third occasion and the harassment continues, advise a staff member. Preferably a Year Advisor or Head Teacher. 4. If you have serious concerns about your child being bullied or harassed please contact their Year Advisor (Y7- Jason Caught, Y8- Gabby Miller, Y9- Amy Chapman, Y10- Glen Jeffrey, Y11- Mark Thompson, Y12- Catriona Fraser) or Andrew Grimshaw (HT Learning and Support). Students are beginning to receive Bronze (HT award) and Silver (DP award) certificates in the coming weeks in recognition of their application and commitment to school. Staff recognise student achievement by awarding Vivo points which can be cashed in for prizes. The Vivos also accumulate to earn a precious metal award. I wish you a safe and happy holiday with your family. Mr Chris Williams Deputy Principal

6 7 Library News

The Library has been busy as usual; this term we have had a focus on reading. Our wonderful administrative assistants play a big role in this, with Barbara Mortimer maintaining the collection and ensuring a steady influx of new books, while Lisa Read has prepared displays, organised a book review folder, and even ‘gift-wrapped’ novels to encourage our students to read. These last items have been so successful in grabbing student attention, that they have been borrowed before I’ve had a chance to grab a photo! We have also increased our resources for parents and carers, providing a range of informative books about supporting and encouraging our young people. These resources are not always easily accessed in the public libraries, so when you need some expert advice, come and borrow a book, or telephone me in the Library for further information on 02 6621 5185. 8 Year 7 Project Based Learning: Me in a Box Presentations

Year 7 students (from left): Isabel Kemp, Maddison Campbell, Kazia Rabe and Bailey Gibson.

Year 7 recently completed their first real project which they had developed during their Project lessons. All students presented their “Me in a Box” project to an audience. An amazing number of Year 7 parents came to school to watch their children do a presentation which answered the driving question “Everyone is unique. Why does my story matter?” Some students presented articles that they had in a physical box, others put PowerPoints together, another student developed a Prezi, whilst yet another student developed their own Powtoon! Many students had palm cards and other prompts to aid with their presentations, which assisted students as they delved into their sometimes very emotional stories. A big thank you to the amazing Year 7 Project teachers, the staff and parents who were members of the audience on the day, and the many parents who assisted their children with their presentations; some were very large and had to be” trucked in”! Year 7 are now excitedly working on their current Sweet and Sour Project which is looking at the impact of sugar in our diets, with the students developing an awareness campaign to promote their views on this topic. Ms Marianne Stickens Head Teacher Project Based Learning

9 10 Donation of laboratory coats and electronic balances

The Science Department and Students of Lismore High Campus would like to thank Mr Graham Lancaster and the Environmental Analysis Laboratory (EAL) at Southern Cross University for their generous donation of Laboratory Coats and Electronic Balances. Our Students were very excited to wear the new coats recently during an eye dissection experiment. They all felt very professional and were keen to participate knowing that they were protected from the “goo” as they described it. Each coat is embroidered with the EAL Logo which we hope will promote the Laboratory. We are sure that our parents and carers will appreciate the protection the coats provide to the school uniforms. Our Chemistry students are very impressed with the “High Tech” electronic balances that have come from the EAL. It is always great to be able to work with new and accurate equipment. Mrs Carmel Elliott Laboratory Technician

EAL Manager: Graham Lancaster 11 Champion Parader: Troy Hepburn Congratulations to Troy Hepburn, Year 9, who was recently at the Canberra Royal Show where he won Champion Parader. Troy was working for Romani Galloways Stud Plus and entered into Speckle Park Paraders Competition and won Champion Parader. Troy has been showing cattle since he was five years old, and just recently sold his first bull for five thousand dollars. Troy quickly became part of Romani Galloways through his forward thinking in preparation of the cattle and delivering a result in the ring on judging day, which is a fast paced environment when competing at a Royal show. Troy is to be commended on the polite and well-mannered way he conducted himself while away as a part of the show team, with long days starting at 5.30am and often ending around 10pm. We are sure that Troy will include agriculture in his future, but also gain an education to support his passion for farming, and surviving in a ever changing industry. This has been a wonderful experience for Troy.

12 Rising Star receives Scholarship - Nyomi Bodley

Southern Cross University and its partners have awarded a new round of Rising Stars Scholarships to support new and continuing students. These prestigious scholarships are made available by the University, local councils, generous community groups, industry and individuals who believe in the value of education. The Australian Government also provides scholarships. Many of the recipients will begin or continue their studies in Session 1 this year, with the scholarships officially awarded at a ceremony in July. Growing up on a 10-acre farm in Coraki and spending weekends out on the boat with her father is what sparked Nyomi Bodley’s interest in the natural world around her.

The Lismore High Campus dux of 2016 was awarded a Mayor of Lismore Scholarship to pursue her dream of studying the combined Bachelor of Environmental Science/Bachelor of Marine Science and Management at Southern Cross University, starting in Session 1. The 18-year-old said it was during a school excursion to the National Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour that helped her decide Southern Cross University was for her. “I was really impressed by the facilities which we will use even more in our third and fourth year – it is what really sold me the degree,” she said. Nyomi received the Year 12 Caltex Best All Rounder student award and as part of her high school volunteering class, helped primary school students twice a week with reading and writing and delivered Meals on Wheels once a week, while also organising fundraisers, participating in school events, playing with her local hockey club and working a part-time job. “This degree will provide me with both research skills and practical knowledge on land and in water and help me reach my career aspirations in marine science and biology,” she said.

Communication with the Lismore High community 1. Updating Your Contact Details Please advise the office when you have had a change to any of your contact details; address, phone numbers, email, emergency contacts. This becomes particularly urgent in case of injury or emergency and can be distressing for students when we are unable to contact you or an emergency contact.

2. Keeping update with the goings on at Lismore. There are a few ways that we communicate with our community.:

14 Music Notes

Music can be demanding and rewarding and can provide real life challenges that require self-discipline and self- control. Music also stands out as a learning and achievements across all subject areas and is itself its own reward. Self-confidence, teamwork, social skills and self-esteem are given a solid boost with engagement in music and this is often a sought after characteristic by employers and educators and the public in general. We have little idea what the jobs of the future are going to be, so it is important that our students are given the opportunity to develop as wide a range of skills as possible as they approach adulthood and the responsibilities of life. Music builds resilience and adaptability into the child and is therefore an excellent subject for this development to occur. We approach the end of Term 1 and elective students have presented Performance and Musicology assessments. This will stand as excellent preparation for MADD Night in Term 3 and watch this space for developing performance opportunities to showcase the developing talent pool available amongst our students. One of these is the Lismore Performing Arts Festival and another will be a Rivers project called Spotlight to showcase the talent from Years 9 to 11 across the college. Other projects are being planned to maximise the performing opportunities for our school and the college as whole. Watch this space for Carlo Fisher on the drums opportunities as they are presented. One Rivers project that was recently completed involved more than 30 students from across the college. We recorded “Opportunity” by Pete Murray as part of a promotional presentation to advertise our excellence in the whole curriculum. If the music was any guide we are certainly displaying excellence

SCU Recording Project students (from left): Annette Kemp, Amber Reynolds, Daisy Thompson, Patricia Cook, Angus Wood and Carlo Fisher. 15 and reflecting our school motto of “Judge us by our deeds”. The song was recorded in the new studio at Southern Cross University and we were ably represented by Carlo Fisher on drums/vocal, Angus Wood on percussion and Patricia Cook, Annette Kemp, Daisy Thompson and Amber Reynolds on vocal parts. The students were introduced to modern recording techniques and equipment in a professional space with some students performing more than one part. The result was a huge success and we all look forward to the post production results which I expect to be first class. Music tuition program is still open for now and I continue to seek interested students to enrol with the NRConservatorium to enable tutors to be available at our school. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: As so far there have been few enrolments this will be the last call to enrol your child in the Music in Schools Program this year. It has been advertised in each Newsletter but if no interest is being expressed the opportunity will lapse. To enrol you must do so on the Conservatorium website. We have been busy with preparing the Lismore High Choir for our annual performance of the traditional Anzac Hymns and Anthems at the Dawn Service. If your child is involved you can be very proud as the choir learns to sing in 3 and 4 part harmony (no easy thing). As part of a nearly 70 year tradition Lismore High has provided the music for this touching and beautiful service at the cenotaph. Just a reminder that this year ANZAC DAY occurs on the last day of the holidays, Tuesday 25th April, so if your child is involved please mark the date on your calendar to ensure the great turnout we have achieved over these many years continues at the Dawn Service. Mr Paul Brady Music Teacher

16 SRC The Student Representative Council has had a great start to the year. We held a fundraiser on Valentine’s Day which raised money for the school. Our SRC and School Leadership Team were involved with the Year 6 into 7 Information Evening on Tuesday the 7th of March. They spoke to parents, supported staff and took parents on tours around the school. Their assistance on the night was outstanding and Lismore High Campus is very proud of their commitment to their school. Due to the multiple fundraisers we hold throughout the year, and also the many carnivals and sporting days the school attends or holds, the SRC decided to purchase two drink eskies. Now at our fundraisers and sporting days our students can enjoy refreshing cool drinks. If you would like to borrow these from the SRC, please contact an SRC member. Ms Whitney McNall SRC Coordinator

Phone calls to Lismore High Campus Dear Parents/Carers, In regards to phone calls to the school, please note that it is important to give our office staff as much information as possible in order for you to be directed to the relevant staff member. All phone calls are confidential and are treated with the upmost importance. When phoning the school, please state your name, manner of business and the student it is concerning. We will endeavour to direct you to the appropriate staff member, if they are available. If not, we will take your contact details and a message to pass on to the staff member as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs Andrina Bennett Student Administration Manager

17 Student Messenger Program Dear Parents/Carers, As of Term 2 2017, we will be using Student Messengers to deliver messages/notes to students and to collect students from class. The students chosen will range alphabetically from Year 7 to Year 8. Their duties will run for the whole day and they will only be chosen once per term. A laptop will be available to students to do their homework/project work and/or play educational games, when the students are not engaged with their duties. If you do not wish your child to participate as a Student Messenger, please let the office staff know as soon as possible. Mrs Andrina Bennett Student Administration Manager Table Tennis Gala Day & North Coast Regional Based Knockout Competition On Friday 24 March 2017, the Gala Day and Knockout Trials were conducted at Goonellabah Table Tennis Centre. Our Campus team of Sam Lancaster, Ethan Magnay, Ivan Elms and Angus Gallagher played well. In Round 1, the boys played Richmond River High Campus Team 3 and won easily 7-0 rubbers. In Round 2, the boys played Richmond River High Campus Team 1, eventually going down, but with very tight 5 game sets. In Round 3, the boys played again winning 4-3 rubbers, the game going down to the last set of doubles, which Sam and Ethan won in three games. I would like to congratulate the boys for their sportsmanship behaviour. The day was eventually won by Evans River Community K-12 School. Mrs Deb Baker Table Tennis Coach

Open North Coast Regional Lismore High Basketball Team: Jenery Crookshanks, Girls Soccer Team: Dana Wilson Bailey Crabtree, Julian Thompson and Angus Gallagher

Northern Rivers Zone Hockey Team: Georgia Brown & Abbey Bailey Multi Class State Athlete: Katie Burke

North Coast Regional Rugby League Team: Josh Walker Zone Basketball Team: John Paden & Julian Thompson 19 GONSKI and The Rivers Secondary College: Lismore High Campus

The Rivers Secondary College: Lismore High Campus has an enrolment of 365, of whom 80% are from low- income backgrounds, 20% are Aboriginal, and 7% come from non-English-speaking backgrounds with many of these students’ parents studying at nearby Southern Cross University. Lismore Campus also has a support unit with 3 classes and 30 students.

How TRSC - Lismore High Campus has used Gonski funding Over the period 2014-2016, Lismore Campus has received about $1.4m in Gonski funding. This has been targeted towards improving the quality of teaching and learning for all students, through improved use of data analysis to target improvements in teaching and learning practices, substantial investment in new technology to ensure better student access, implementing a new project-based curriculum and teaching program which started with Yr 7 and is now commencing implementation at Yr 9 level and significant investment in teacher professional learning and support to underpin the new curriculum. In addition, funding has been used to establish a new senior study program for Yr 11 &12 students, create a tailored package of individual support for Aboriginal students, better target support to English-as-an-Additional-Language-or-Dialect (EALD) students, and improved student well-being support. The school has also sought to provide opportunities for students to access learning experiences not usually available to country students, to introduce a greater focus on gifted and talented students, to establish more effective communications practices with parents, stunts and the community, and create a range of learning spaces that better engage students.

How Gonski funding has made a difference for students The project-based learning program is successfully engaging students in higher-order thinking skills required for the 21st century, and misbehaviour in class has decreased dramatically. School attendance has improved, and enrolments are rising. NAPLAN results are significantly improved, with growth levels at or above state- level, and a particular improvement in the achievement of Aboriginal students. In addition, Lismore High Campus achieved exceptional results in 2015, 37 out of 38 students in Year 12 being awarded their HSC.

What the continuation of Gonski funding means to TRSC - Lismore High Campus Principal Nigel Brito says these significant improvements could not have been achieved without Gonski funding. Continuation of funding will allow Lismore High Campus to embed and extend the successful initiatives the school has already put in place.
