LISMORE HIGH CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Dalley Street Lismore NSW 2480 T 02 6621 5185 F 02 6622 2940 E [email protected] www.lismore-h.schools.nsw.edu.au ISSUE 3 I TERM 1 I WEEK 10A I 2017 Visual Arts Excursion to the Gallery of Modern Art All of Year 7 & 8 and elective Visual Arts and Photography students were invited to attend the Visual Arts excursion to the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane recently. The early start and late finish for the day did not deter 49 students from taking the opportunity to travel to Brisbane to view Sugar Spin, an exhibition celebrating the 10th birthday of GOMA. Sugar Spin is a fun exhibition that features more than 250 contemporary artworks and includes many interactive displays. Students enjoyed sliding on the metal slide from the top floor to ground level. The slide is by artist Carsten Holler, a former biologist who creates works to make scientific and philosophical experiments with the aim of reshaping expectations about art. There was an interactive piece by artist Olafur Eliasson where students could play with thousands of white lego blocks to build their own city. (Continued on page 2) Students could stroke a furry wall made of soft fluorescent coloured synthetic hair by artists Hrafnhildur Arnardottir. The hair covered a large section of wall and cascaded down and over various shapes to the floor. A work by Celeste Boursier-Mougenot allowed students to enter a room filled with three different species of live finches who flittered around three wire sculptures that made sounds when the birds landed on them. These were just a few of the engaging works to be seen and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, gathering from the comments I had during the day and at school in the days after the excursion. While Year 12 Visual Arts students were casting a more critical eye over the exhibition as part of a compulsory case study, they too had lots of fun. A special mention must go to several senior students who, after returning to school at 6.45pm, proceeded to the hall and assisted with the Open Night for prospective 2018 Yr 7 students. They conducted tour groups around classrooms and were wonderful ambassadors for Lismore High Campus. Also many thanks to Mrs George and Leonie Claydon who assisted with supervision during the excursion and helped make the day possible. P & C Meeting 6pm 1 May Athletics Carnival 5 May NAPLAN 9-11 May P & C Yr 7 Vaccinations Last month we held our P and C Annual General Meeting. There 15 May were few changes to the committee with myself, Nadine Toniello, being re-elected as the President. Michelle Simpson was re- elected as Vice President, with Suzie Thompson continuing the Secretary role and Carolyn Lindwall as our Treasurer. P&C Meeting 1st Monday of 2017 looks like a much quieter year compared to 2016. The each month uniform policy has been endorsed by the P and C and the gradual implementation of these changes are underway. It is exciting to see so many students wearing the new school uniform proudly with many positive comments being heard in the community. I would like to thank everyone who supported the P and C throughout 2016, including those on the committee, parents and carers who attend monthly meetings, the staff of Lismore High, and Nigel and Chris. Thank you for your commitment, support and friendship. We acknowledge that they are the first peoples of this land on which our school stands. 4 Principal’s Report The Nesbitt Award has been a long standing award at Lismore High Campus, however for the past number of years, it has not been awarded at the school. The trust which manages the award has been undergoing a review of the conditions of the award and has had to change the conditions of the award to ensure that the award applies to the equity and anti-discrimination policies of the NSW Department of Education. The changes for the award have been approved by the NSW Attorney General and will be going for final approval before the NSW Supreme Court in June this year. The new structure will be: Monetary scholarships for: Year 7 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 8 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 9 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 10 Top (male and female student) (approx.$5000 - $10000+ spread over 2 years each) Year 11 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) Year 12 Top two students (male or female) academically (approx. $500 – $1000+ each) The amounts indicated are approximations only, and are dependent on how much the trust earns in the year. The determination of the top students will be done through specific academic testing. You will notice the substantial award for students in Year 10 will be awarded to both a male and a female student. This is due to the specific request of the Nesbitt award, which has been maintained after the changes. More information will be released later in the year and hopefully we can commence awarding the scholarships. The return of the award to Lismore High Campus will be a great asset to the school and reward our students striving for academic success. Students are reminded that lessons run as normal until the holidays start and parents are encouraged to go through assessment schedules (Years 9-12) with their children to assist them in planning for these tasks into Term Two. It is also a good opportunity for parents to look through student workbooks to review their progress. All pages should include: dates, margins, headings underlined, worksheets glued in and drawings in lead pencil. Year 12 students are wished well as they begin their half yearly examinations this week. Whilst students are not expected to be at school during the examination period outside of examinations times, the senior study room is available and staff are always happy to assist if advance notice is given. Students are expected to be in full school uniform and adhere to the examination procedures. If this period is the only time you observe your student studying over the year, it would be beneficial to discuss “cramming” versus deep knowledge that is learnt over an extended period of time. Year 12 students should be completing at least 2-3 hours revision every day in addition to assessments and homework throughout the year. Unfortunately, a number of students are hindering their chances for success in the HSC by spending much of their outside school time in employment. A casual job in excess of 10 hours per week in addition to studies is not advisable. Nigel and I have made it very clear to students that bullying and harassment will not be tolerated in our school and the school’s discipline and anti-bullying policies will be followed up in relation to incidents. Being abusive or retaliating with physical aggression will be treated the same as initiating the harassment. Parents can assist the school by discussing appropriate strategies with their children around responding to bullying. 1. Advise the harasser that you would like them to stop. Often students say nothing or respond with something equally as offensive. 2. In the second instance, place your palm forwards in a stop gesture (step back as you do this) and firmly tell the person to stop and get out of your personal space or you will report the incident to a teacher. 3. If there is a third occasion and the harassment continues, advise a staff member. Preferably a Year Advisor or Head Teacher. 4. If you have serious concerns about your child being bullied or harassed please contact their Year Advisor (Y7- Jason Caught, Y8- Gabby Miller, Y9- Amy Chapman, Y10- Glen Jeffrey, Y11- Mark Thompson, Y12- Catriona Fraser) or Andrew Grimshaw (HT Learning and Support). Students are beginning to receive Bronze (HT award) and Silver (DP award) certificates in the coming weeks in recognition of their application and commitment to school.
