Minutes from the Executive Committee Meeting January 28, 2016

The Executive Committee Meeting was held at Holly Ridge Church on January 28, 2016.

Rev. Walt Tanner, Moderator and Pastor of Capstone Church, opened the meeting with prayer. The meeting was called to order.

Rev. Al Phillips, GBA Director of Missions, encouraged attendees from Joshua 10:7-11. Like the Israelites, the GBA needs to take quick and decisive action. We have the vision and mission God gave us. The vision for Greenville Baptist Association is to: Reach the unreached, Revitalize churches, and Reproduce new churches. In 2015, the Association was blessed with hundreds of volunteers to help with Blue in the Zoo, Mission Greenville, and Deaf Camp. The GBA has a clear vision, and now we need to mobilize our members for the next step. Looking forward towards 2016, the GBA will see some changes. We need to keep the initiative going during spiritual warfare we encounter.

The Finance Committee reported:  GBA churches gave $380,000 in 2015, which is $10,000 less than was given in 2014  The GBA budget is $400,000 annually  Most of the giving came in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2015  The operating budget for the GBA comes from the gifts from the churches

The Personnel Committee reported:  The GBA staff is looking for a part-time secretary  The committee has interviewed 6 people for this position, and has narrowed it down to 2 people  The committee is hoping to make a hire in the next week

The Church Relations Committee reported:  The GBA has given Augusta Heights Church adequate time to repent as decided in the 155th Annual Meeting  Augusta Heights Church has not responded to our requests  Augusta Heights Church will no longer be considered a part of GBA  In the future, should they want to return for membership of the GBA, Augusta Heights Church will have to go through the same process as a new church coming into the Association.

A time of prayer was held for Augusta Heights Church and all of our churches concerning the current changes in our culture.

Reaching the Unreached:  Rev. Joel Thrasher, GBA Missions Strategy Leader, gave a report on the 10/40 Window:  Viet Nam: o There are currently 8 million people in Ho Chi Minh City o The IMB has a presence there, but 3 missionary families have been called back to the USA  Myanmar (also known as Burma): o Adoniram Judson, a Baptist missionary in the early 1800s, began his ministry in Burma o 90% of the population are Buddhist; and persecute Muslims and Christians o Very few westerners make up their population

Revitalizing Churches:  David Street Church: o Several local churches are assisting with revitalization efforts o Volunteers are helping with renovations, donating labor, and materials needed

- 10 -

o David Street Church approved their first budget in 20 years – in its first month, 30% of its yearly budget was given o They are seeing more kids than adults in attendance o In February, David Street Church will experience baptisms o David Street Church is focusing to minister in their neighborhood that contains homeless and wealthy residents. o Prayer was held for David Street Church and its ministry

Reproducing New Churches:  Rev. Fred Giles, Pastor of The Meeting Place, reported they were meeting Rutherford Road and are sponsored by Origins Church o They celebrated their 1-year anniversary o They have moved to new building and new community o They have a partnership with local schools (including Taylor Elementary School) where they provided backpacks for students o They will be baptizing 7 individuals soon o They are dreaming big and focusing on their community  Rev. Alfred Johnson, Pastor of Church Without Walls, reported they were meeting in the chapel of Augusta Heights Church and are sponsored by Kingdom Life Church o They gave out 70 coats to children from donations given to their ministry o They have a partnership with the Salvation Army o Several GBA churches have sent volunteers o A men’s Bible study was started and is currently being held in a home  There several are locations in Greenville County that need churches. And, there are church planters that are available and called by God. Efforts to connect these church planters to areas in Greenville County will be funded by the GLOCAL Missions Fund.  The GBA partnership with New England was explained and several church planters from New England shared their work in that mission field. o The GBA has a 10-year goal to plant 3 churches in New England o Triads (2 GBA churches paired with a New England church planter) are being formed. o The neighborhoods of the New England church planters are: Providence, RI; the south of Boston; the center of Boston; the west end of Boston; and Norwich, CN o Prayer was held for the New England church planters as they spread out around the sanctuary allowing 3-4 people to gather around them

The Camp Marietta Board of Trustees reported that they had voted to accept bids and would be in further negotiations.

Small groups for Pastors would be starting in February. These groups will meet every other week to pray, study, and fellowship. Right now, these groups are being formed for senior pastors only, but other groups for church staff will be started soon.

Walt Tanner closed in prayer and the meeting was adjourned.

Minutes from the Executive Committee Meeting April 28, 2016

The Executive Committee Meeting was held at David Street Church on April 28, 2016.

Rev. Walt Tanner, Moderator and Pastor of Capstone Church, opened the meeting with prayer. The meeting was called to order.

Revitalizing Churches: Rev. Mike Kuckel, Pastor David Street Church, gave update report on his ministry. Prayers have been answered. Renovations are on-going. They are now averaging 25 kids and 20 adults! They are working in the neighborhood providing fun-times for the kids which will continue through the summer. Mike told the story of a neighbor man who was didn’t want to be bothered by the ministry but when he had a family situation, he came to the ministry for help! He asked for prayer for them to have endurance and resources (leadership) to continue to work with all the kids, addicts, tutoring program, etc. We prayed for Mike and the ministry of David Street Church.

Reaching the Unreached: Rev. Dale Sutton, Pastor of Overbrook Church, presented the financial report. February was a low month for contributions across the association. Budget is $7,000 behind in giving from the churches. There is a new item, “GLOCAL Missions Fund” which is not part of the budget. This is to be used to expand on missions globally and locally. Churches are encouraged to give to this fund.

Al Phillips, GBA Director of Missions, shared I Corinthians 4, as we need to be stewards of the Gospel of Christ and advance the cause of Christ. Our Acts 1:8 vision incorporates: Reach, Revitalize and Reproduce. We want to be found faithful and make Jesus famous everywhere.

Fifty pastors have been involved in the small groups studying Being Leaders by Dr. Aubrey Malphurs. The Re:Vision 2016 Revitalization Conference is scheduled for May 26th for pastors and staff. Aubrey Malphurs will be the special guest discussing his book. The retreat is sponsored by the South Carolina State Convention as well as the Greenville Baptist Association.

The Disaster Relief teams are working in South Carolina with flood victims. There are facilities available to house mission teams up to 60 people. A grant has been received from SC to purchase materials so the teams can arrive and work without have to purchase materials.

Rev. Joel Thrasher, GBA Missions Strategy Leader, presented the Missions Strategy report.  One percent of the population in the U.S.A. are deaf. Only 0.025% of the deaf population are actively involved in a congregation or Christian ministry. Therefore, the deaf population meets the criteria to be considered an Unreached People Group (UPG). The Greenville Baptist Association will be celebrating 40 years of sponsoring a Deaf Day Camp for kids who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or CODA (children of deaf adults). On Saturday, June 4th, there will be a celebration at the Greenville Zoo. Our hope is that this event will help to build relationships with the deaf community here in Greenville county.  Mission Greenville is a week-long mission opportunity that takes place in the summer and involves our partnership with the city of Greenville and churches outside Greenville county. The purpose of Mission Greenville is to help with the revitalization efforts in the city of Greenville. The GBA is looking for 5 more host churches from the Association for this event.  The GBA is looking to adopt an Unreached People Group (UPG) in Southeast Asia, specifically in the country of Myanmar. As Greenville is home to many from Myanmar, we will have an opportunity to minister to them as well. The city of Mandalay is the “seat of Buddhism” and the GBA is looking to plant a church there.

- 12 -

Reproducing New Churches: Rev. Fred Giles, Pastor of The Meeting Place, gave praise that renovations are completed his church. They moved to their new location because their children’s ministry had outgrown their space. They are now growing out of this location as well. The Meeting Place averages 7 children to every adult! Fred related that Facebook users are now equal to the population in the largest country in the world. We should look upon this as a mission and use its influence to reach people for Christ. The Meeting Place needs people and resources to use social media as a part of their mission field. They will need cameras, etc. Al Phillips prayed for this ministry.

Alfred Johnson, Pastor Church Without Walls, shared stories from his ministry - specifically a young girl who felt safer in jail then she did in her own home. Alfred shared Christ with her and stood up for God. He has received physical threats, even a bomb threat, for his stand for Christ. Church Without Walls is partnering with the Salvation Army and Earle Street Church to provide food service for people. They have great leadership for the Girl Scouts and have about 40 girls involved, but are looking to find leadership for the Boy Scouts. They are also beginning a ministry called “Mary and Martha” that will minister to women in the sex traffic trade. This is happening within a 3-mile radius of the church. Church Without Walls has received permission to go on the grounds of these hotels in order to minister to these women and children. They need Bibles and hygiene kits to give to these women. Dale Sutton prayed for this ministry.

The New England Partnership now has 5 triads established. Great encouragement is being given to the New England church planters.

Al Phillips showed a map of Greenville County marking the areas of the county that have no evangelical church. Four areas were marked: Verdae Road, Augusta Road, Pelham Road, and the Donaldson Center area. There is an Imagine Vision Tour coming up on May 22-23, 2016, that will include potential church planters interested in coming to Greenville. The GBA and the Three Rivers Association will be touring these areas and praying over these areas asking for God’s leadership in planting churches in these areas.

The GLOCAL Missions Fund will be the emphasized during our Association Emphasis Week May 15-22, 2016. This year’s theme is “The Clock is Ticking” which will help to promote a sense of urgency. The GBA will provide video clips that can be shown during church worship services and a brochure and prayer card that can be distributed. All of these items will be mailed to churches and are available for download on the GBA website (www.greenvillebaptist.org).

Participants in for the upcoming New England Vision Tour to Boston (May 9-13) stood to be recognized. Attendees gathered around them and laid hands on them as Walt Tanner led in prayer.

The meeting was adjourned.

Minutes from the Special Called Executive Committee Meeting June 9, 2016

The Special Called Executive Committee Meeting was held at Roper Mountain Church on June 9, 2016.

Rev. Brett Aiken, Vice- Moderator and Pastor or Temple Church, opened the meeting with prayer. The meeting was called to order.

Camp Marietta: Mrs. Katrina Campbell, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees for Camp Marietta, gave a brief history of the events leading up the unanimous decision to place Camp Marietta on the commercial real estate market. The Board received 9 proposals, 5 of which were interviewed. In February, the Board of Trustees entered into negotiations with one proposal. These negotiations have since fallen through. The motion proposed by the Board of Trustees is as follows:

“Having exhausted all associational approved options for the transition of Camp Marietta, the Board of Trustees moves that a committee comprised of two persons and the DOM’s from Greenville and Three Rivers Associations be appointed by the moderators to facilitate the sale of Camp Marietta and bring a recommendation to Greenville and Three Rivers associations at a joint called associational meeting.”

Dr. Benny Littlejohn, Pastor of Eastlan Church, stated that since the motion was coming from the Board of Trustees no second was needed.

Rev. Jeremy Johns, Discipleship and Development Pastor of Rocky Creek Church, asked for a clarification of the options used by the Board of Trustees. Katrina Campbell explained the three options the Board of Trustees used were:

Option 1: Sale Camp Marietta to North Greenville University Option 2: Sale Camp Marietta to a Christian ministry Option 3: Sale Camp Marietta on the commercial real estate market

Mr. Kirk Atkins, Member of the Board of Trustees for Camp Marietta and Member of Piedmont Park Church, elaborated on the reason the negotiations fell through with the chosen proposal. The Board of Trustees sought a protection clause to the effect that the property would come back to the associations should the new ministry fail in five years. An agreement could not be reached on this.

Rev. Larry Gunter, Pastor of Grove Station Church, asked if the appointees of the motion would have commercial real estate experience. Rev. Al Phillips, Greenville Baptist Association Director of Missions, said the names of the appointees would be released upon a favorable passing of the motion.

Jeremy Johns asked for clarification from the Board of Trustees that no other Christian ministries were considered viable proposals as stated in Option 2. Katrina Campbell explained the Board of Trustees did not have any other viable proposals that would fall under Option 2. Moving ahead with Option 3 would mean a creation of a new committee to oversee the sale of Camp Marietta on the commercial real estate market.

Benny Littlejohn moved that discussion be closed. A vote was taken by raising of hands of those who possessed ballot cards. The motion passed (23-3). Al Phillips thanked the Board of Trustees for their efforts and introduced the appointees for the new committee: Rev. Dale Sutton, Pastor of Overbrook Church, and Mr. Tim Keagy, Member of Rocky Creek and local Relator.

Rev. Dan Messer, GBA Hispanic Ministries Leader, motioned to adjourn. Al Phillips closed in prayer.

Minutes of the 156th Annual Meeting October 27, 2016

The 156th Greenville Baptist Association’s Annual Meeting was held at Kingdom Life Church on October 27, 2016.

Rev. Al Phillips, Director of Missions, opened the meeting with a call for prayer concerning our nation, the upcoming presidential election, and our leaders.

Worship began with congregational singing of How Great Is Our God, led by Rev. Robbie Sox, Minister of Music of Brushy Creek Church.

Rev. Walt Tanner, Pastor of Capstone Church and GBA Moderator, welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. He then recognized the guests, new pastors/staff, and introduced the new GBA Moderator for 2017, Rev. Brett Aiken, Pastor of Temple Church.

Motion of Organization was read by Mrs. Verla Bennie, Association Clerk and Member of Mauldin First Church. It was seconded and approved.

Robbie Sox presented the agenda. There was no second needed and it was approved.

Al Phillips thanked Walt Tanner for the great job he did as Moderator this past year. Walt Tanner was presented with a commemorative gavel.

Al Phillips introduced the GBA staff and thanked them for the great job they do. Al explained he has a three-fold responsibility at the Association: 1) He is a pastor to the pastors; 2) He helps develop leaders; 3) He desires to mobilize churches for kingdom work.

The vision of the Association is: Reach the Unreached, Revitalize our existing churches, and Reproduce new churches. This is not just something we are going to do in the future, but something we are actively involved in currently. Our mission is to create access to the gospel in places where there is no access right now. Access to the Gospel is virtually unlimited in Greenville County. Where are those places in the world with no access to the gospel right now?

 There are 7.5 billion people in the world.  44% or 3 billion live as UPGs (Unreached People Groups)  95% of the people categorized as a UPG live in the 10/40 Window  80,000 people die and go to hell every day in the 10/40 Window without ever hearing the gospel

In the neighborhoods of Greenville County, 75% of the people have no relationship to a church or to the Gospel. With Romans 15:19-20 as our foundation, by the next annual meeting (October 2017) the GBA plans to plant 2 more churches in Greenville County, plant 1 church in New England, and adopt a UPG in the 10/40 window. We are Greenville Baptist Association and this is what we do.

Reaching the Unreached – Revitalizing Churches – Reproducing New Churches:

The finance report was presented by Rev. Dale Sutton, Pastor of Overbrook Church. The income this year is 7% higher than last year. With the finalized sale of Camp Marietta, the GBA will receive about $200,000 which will be applied to the mortgage on the GBA Office building located at 220 Howe Street, Greenville. We have a 20-year mortgage on the building and the dialysis center has a 10-year lease with us. The income from the dialysis center is used for missions, churches, etc. Dale then called for the motion from the finance committee to adopt the proposed budget. Mr. Kirk Atkins, Member of Piedmont Park Church, asked if the finance committee anticipated meeting the budget? Dale answered affirmatively. Question was called, and a vote was taken. The Proposed 2017 Budget was approved. - 18 -

The Committee on Nominations report was presented by Dr. Marshall Fagg, Pastor of West Gantt First Church. The motion to accept the report as printed was made. There were not questions. The motion passed.

Robbie Sox then lead in a time of worship, with I’ll Fly Away.

In Jerusalem:

Rev. Fred Giles, Pastor of The Meeting Place, gave a report of his church plant’s progress. The Meeting Place will celebrate their two-year anniversary soon. They launched “Freedom Center” which provides tangible resources and life- skills training. Their “Love Army” ministry is a mobile makeover center for serving underprivileged people by giving haircuts, etc. They have outgrown their current children’s ministry areas and will be opening a new area in November 2016. The Meeting Place is also actively reproducing new churches. They are looking for ministry opportunities to plant a church in the lower part of South Carolina.

Rev. Alfred Johnson, Pastor of Church Without Walls, shared that there are over 900 people in Shemwood Crossing Apartment Complex; with 537 children. They have seen 255 salvations. One individual from their congregation is training to be a church planter. Alfred also shared that his 9-year old son accepted Christ as his Savior!

Rev. Joel Thrasher, Mission Strategy Leader for GBA, reported on Mission Greenville, Deaf Day Camp, Blue in the Zoo, Disaster Relief, and Crisis Centers:

 Mission Greenville celebrated its 17th year this past summer. Eighty participants comprised 6 teams which fixed 7 roofs in the city of Greenville. However, there is much more than just repairs to roofs being done through this ministry. These participants are able to witnesses to homeowners and their neighborhoods.  Deaf Day Camp celebrated its 40th year anniversary. According to the definition of a UPG, the deaf are a UPG right here in Greenville County.  Blue in the Zoo saw over 500 law enforcement officers, their families, and volunteers from GBA churches participate this year. This was a successful event in which the Greenville Zoo directors and staff were heavily involved. We look forward to another successful event in September of 2017.  Disaster Relief teams had a busy year. The mud-out team(s) have been deployed 4 or 5 times this year and has already been out with the latest hurricane. They anticipate being called out again.  This past year the very first crisis center in Greenville County, Eastside Crisis Center, closed. As a result, the Westside Crisis Center is getting most of the overflow. Currently there are no funds available from World Hunger. Westside Crisis Center depends on financial assistance, food donations and volunteer help from the GBA churches.

Rev. Dan Messer, Hispanic Ministries Leader for GBA, reported growth in our Hispanic ministries with an average weekly attendance of 372 among these churches. There have been 27 baptisms this year and 8 more scheduled for November. A youth event was held and 360 attended. One of the Hispanic churches bought a church building and property. At their dedication service, over 418 attended. The building only seats 260! Five Hispanic pastors and their wives were in attendance and were recognized:

 Reimer and Debora Falck (Misión Hispana Mauldin)  Carols and Rita Galarza (Misión Hispana Laurel and Misión Hispana Hampton Heights)  Rafael and Raquel Jáuregui (Cristo Única Esperanza)  Carlos and Flor Ruiz (Fuente de Vida)  Antonio and Rosio Mejía (Rio de Gloria)

Al Phillips reported that a conference entitled “Building Bridges to the Gay Community” was held at the GBA Office in September. Further discussions will be held in 2017 to reach this community. Al also reported that 2017 will be year focusing on church revitalization. Our motto will be “no church left behind.” On January 7, 2017, there will be a church - 19 - revitalization conference held at Lee Road Church. The GBA will be looking at how best to assist our churches replant, rebrand, merge, etc.

In Judea and Samaria:

Walt Tanner reported on the progress of the GBA partnership with New England. Phase 1 of the partnership was to establish triads with GBA churches and New England churches. Phase 1 is complete. Phase 2 is to plant 3 new churches in New England in the next 10 years. Rev. J. D. Mangrum, Pastor of Origins Church, will be our first church planter to New England. J. D. Magrum was introduced and gave his testimony about how God has called him to New England. The Mangrum family will be moving to Charlestown, Massachusetts (the oldest neighborhood in Boston) on December 29, 2016, to plant a church in that area. The GLOCAL Mission Fund that is supported by GBA churches financially helps these types of ministries.

Robbie Sox then lead in a time of worship, with It is Well with My Soul.

To the Ends of the Earth:

Al Phillips and Joel Thrasher introduced Dr. Duane Ostrem, Affinity Strategy Leader for Southeast Asia of IMB, and Todd with IMB. Myanmar is a country that is 88% Buddhist and has 4 million Muslims. There are 85 people groups and 32 of these are categorized as UPGs with 6 categorized as unengaged. What is the role of the GBA? God is leading the GBA to adopt a partnership with Myanmar. A vision trip to Myanmar is scheduled for March 2017. There is a window of opportunity available to us, but the window may close soon. We must act now!

Al Phillips led in a prayer time Todd, Duane Ostrem, and the work in Myanmar.

Joel Thrasher led a commissioning ceremony for J. D. Mangrum as our first church planter in New England. A commissioning certificate was signed followed by a prayer asking blessings over the Mangrum family and their new ministry.

Respectfully submitted, Verla Bennie Association Clerk

Director of Missions

The past year has been exciting as we have implemented large parts of the vision we only were able to cast last year. Our vision is to reach the unreached, revitalize churches and reproduce new churches. We will do this in Greenville, North America and to the ends of the earth in obedience to the command of Jesus in Acts 1:8. We believe the GBA exists for the sake of FAME – Fellowship-Accountability-Missions-Evangelism and when we do these things well, Jesus is made famous.

Throughout the year, I have visited and preached in our churches, ministered to pastors and staff, trained Pastor Search Committees, facilitated efforts to revitalize and merge churches, worked with the SCBC to coordinate our partnerships and served as a sounding board for ministers seeking counsel and advice. The GBA has responded to this vision by pulling together to fund and implement all these efforts and more. I am excited to share that it appears we will meet our budget this year after making painful cuts last year. With the cuts, careful management of spending and increased giving by our churches, we have been able to make GBA leaner and more efficient while increasing ministry and missions dramatically. Here are a few of the things we have worked on in 2016 as part of our vision:

 We launched two new churches, Greenville Church Without Walls and The Meeting Place with pastor/planters Alfred Johnson and Fred Giles respectively. Both are healthy, growing and reaching lost people with the gospel.  We launched a new GLOCAL Missions Fund that GBA churches give to above and beyond their gifts to the GBA with every penny going to fund our missions work, our new church plants and revitalization efforts ($1,000 a month goes to each of our new church plants out of this fund).  We reconvened our quarterly Executive Committee meetings to communicate more effectively with each other about what God is doing and to make more timely decisions.  We initiated small groups for pastors with some 50 pastor and staff gathering in 6 small groups across the association meeting bi-weekly for fellowship, accountability and leadership development. Groups have started back up for the fall with 44 involved in 5 groups.  We concluded the spring with our Revision Leadership Conference featuring author and seminary professor Dr. Aubrey Malphurs with more than 60 leaders from across the GBA in attendance at Evangelical Institute.  We hosted Loving Our Schools, a special training for churches seeking to minister to our public schools.  We offered Any3 Evangelism Training for Everyone in March as part of our Reaching the Unreached efforts.  We continue to offer TaeKwonDo classes for ministers in our office under the tutelage of 4th Degree Black Belt Master Instructor, Jim Whitworth.  We took 15 of our pastors through the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department Tactical Training in May.  We led a vision trip for our churches to New England as part of our ongoing partnership with the New England Baptist Convention where we have committed to planting three new churches in ten years.  We welcomed a new staff member to GBA in Anna Richardson from Fountain Inn. She is doing a great job as our new part-time administrative assistant.  We created and distributed thousands of ministry kits, many of which went to the inner-city work of Church Without Walls.  We marketed and sold Camp Marietta after a called joint meeting of GBA and Three Rivers Baptist Association.  We planned and implemented Mission Greenville and Deaf Day Camp under the leadership of Joel Thrasher and Wanda Bridwell.  We hosted Mission Insite Training for churches to learn how to use a powerful new tool to reach their neighborhoods with the gospel.  We collected and distributed school supplies to inner city kids for the new school year.  We planned and implemented our second annual Blue in the Zoo reaching out to law enforcement officers and their families across the county.  We planned a ministers and spouses fellowship entitled The Sort of Late Show with David Letterhead attended by more than 100 at FBC, Mauldin.

- 21 -

We will begin 2017 with a renewed focus on revitalizing churches starting with a Revitalize Conference on Saturday, January 7 at Lee Road Church. We look forward to 2017 with a continued focus on reaching the unreached by adopting an Unreached People Group in SE Asia and commissioning our first church planter in New England, JD Mangrum. We will send our first teams to New England this year to help JD lay the groundwork for his new church in Charlestown. We will take a vision trip with leaders from GBA to explore our new UPG adoption in SE Asia. All of this while keeping our eyes fixed on reaching the unreached right here in Greenville.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as DOM for GBA. It is a great blessing for which I thank God every morning. My door is always open to our pastors and churches. I look forward to a great year ahead.

Till All May Know, Al Phillips Director of Missions

Missions Strategy

2016, a year of beginnings and endings. Some things never change.

REACH

Reach the nations among us. There are people from at least 87 nationalities, speaking 39 languages, living in Greenville County. We have people groups here from nations where we cannot send IMB personnel. Here! In our schools, neighborhoods, workplaces. The Great Commission commands us to go to the ends of the earth. The reality is that we don’t have to go very far to reach people from the ends of the earth. One of the unreached people groups in Greenville is our deaf population. This was the 40th anniversary of the GBA-sponsored day camp for deaf children and children of deaf adults. There were 12 campers and 14 volunteers. Hampton Heights church served as the host this year. Not only was the camp a special time, but we hosting a 40th anniversary celebration event at the Greenville Zoo. It was a great opportunity for 150+ Deaf people in the Upstate to fellowship together and reminisce over day camps gone by. It was also an excellent time of sharing the good news of Jesus through drama and storying. Day Camp returns June 5-9, 2017. Reaching the nations also includes our 16 language congregations. Many more are needed to reach the nations. Our 4-year partnership in Honduras was brought to a close in July. What a great time of celebrating with the people of Iglesia Cristiana Gracia de Dios in Choluteca. Many folks from GBA have been part of various ministries in that area, as well as working alongside of the new church to construct their first building.

Reach the unreached. As you may know, we have been talking about GBA adopting an Unreached People Group in what is called the 10/40 Window. One of the parameters we placed on this partnership is that is must also connect with a people group in our area. We narrowed that down to basically 2 countries – Vietnam and Myanmar. I had the opportunity to visit in both of those earlier this year. Spending 20 hours in a plane (one way) was worth the incredible time I had there. We met with IMB folks, as well as local pastors and others, as we sought wisdom and God’s direction. Ultimately, and there is a long story to it, we have decided on Myanmar! I am excited about officially launching that partnership in our Annual Meeting this year.

Reach the least of these. The Bible speaks of taking care of the poor, widow, orphan, foreigner, hungry, prisoner, etc… over 300 times. It’s important! Our churches are involved in a number of individual and collective efforts. One way is through the Westside Crisis Center and Golden Strip Emergency Relief. The centers are staffed by close to 300 volunteers from 30+ churches. Jim Barnette continues to provide leadership at the Westside Center. The Golden Strip Center is a partnership with the Golden Strip Emergency Relief and Resource Agency coordinated by Julia Bayne. Food is provided by churches, groups, and individuals as well as purchased from various locations. The centers have also depended on funds from the World Hunger Offering. As you may know, due to the shortfall in the hunger offerings last year, the South Carolina Baptist Convention stopped providing any hunger assistance in May. This has hurt! We are hopeful that the hunger offerings will be sufficient enough for the State Convention to begin distributing funds again in 2017. Even with this shortfall, the centers continue to assist thousands of individuals with basic needs including food, clothing and financial aid. Thanks to all who make these ministries possible. As you probably noticed, the Eastside Crisis Center is not listed. That center began in the early 1980’s as a ministry through East Park Church. Spencer LeGrand was the pastor at East Park, and led the way to establishing our first crisis center. From the beginning, it operated in the East Park facilities. Earlier this year, East Park voted to sell their facility. After much prayer and numerous conversations, the hard decision was made to close the Eastside Center. I am forever grateful to Spencer and his faithful, untiring leadership at Eastside. Then there are the volunteers, church contributions and so much more. Thousands of families have been assisted through the years. Countless numbers have had their lives changed because of the Eastside Center. To God be the glory! Mission Greenville continues to move forward. Edwards Road church does a great job of housing the participants and hosting the project. Host churches fed the crews. The partnership with the City remained strong. Approximately 120 participants from 4 churches were involved. The crews completed 7 roofs, and that last one was a bear! Thanks to all those who are involved in this ministry. The 2017 dates are: June. 19 – 23. This year, 51 churches provided 1,814 prisoner packets for Christmas. Thanks to Pat Bradshaw from West Gantt FBC and other volunteers for all your help. Prison ministry is not just about Christmas packets. There are other volunteers in our churches who are actively involved in ministry with inmates, families of inmates as well as those who work within the correctional system. Multiple churches provided useful items such as paper goods, personal care items, health

- 23 - care items, school supplies and clothing for numerous agencies and organizations within the Greenville area. 11 churches provided 258 ministry kits. Thanks to all who prayed, gave and worked on these projects. Another way we reach out to people is through Disaster Relief. Our unit continues to be a vital part of the DR ministry. Teams were involved in flood relief efforts in South Carolina, West Virginia and Louisiana. And, as I am writing this, we wait on Hurricane Matthew to make landfall in the US. Jim Whitworth provides excellent leadership as our volunteer DR director. His report can be found in the Book of Reports.

Reach law enforcement personnel. Blue in the Zoo just keeps on growing. This began as a way for us to express appreciation and support to law enforcement personnel and their families. How thankful we are for the 150+ volunteers from 12 churches and Anderson University, as well as zoo staff. 360+ participants were part of this event! We continue to receive positive feedback from the churches and law enforcement folks.

Reach students. Baptist Collegiate Ministries is an important outreach and discipleship arm of our churches to college students. The BCM director for Furman is Andy Cooper. Bryan Bowman did a great job working with the students at Greenville Tech for several years. The new BCM leader for Greenville Tech is Todd Perkins. Their reports are listed elsewhere.

Reach the irreligious. We may live in the Deep South, but our society continues to change at an amazing pace. Speaking of change, have you seen the Greenville skyline lately? ALL that new construction!! It is good to see Apartment Life return to Greenville. We helped get that off the ground here several years ago. The economic downturn caused a lot of adjustment in that ministry. Stephen and Kaylin Leopard are the newest CARES team in one of the new properties here. They are active in Origins church. Multihousing ministry, whether in low income, high end, or properties somewhere in between, must not be overlooked. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. The top 25 most unreached areas of the Upstate are all in Greenville County. The most unreached zip code in the state is 29601, at close to 90%. At least 70% of our entire population is unreached and 40% of our population is not only unreached, but uninterested. We must reach the irreligious with the gospel!

REPRODUCE

Church Planting must continue to be an important part of what we do to transform the changing populations in Greenville County. There are currently 19 church plants in the GBA! Our 2 newest ones are The Meeting Place with Fred Giles as pastor, and the Church Without Walls with Alfred Johnson as pastor. Hispanic Ministries are needed more than more with our rapidly growing Hispanic communities. Dan Messer provides excellent leadership to this ministry. We have also worked to identify the 4 or 5 priority areas within GBA for new churches. With our increasing ethnicity, local church involvement lower than it was 25 years ago, and the increasingly irreligious neighbors around us, we must be planting new churches!

Our New England partnership was launched last year. The first stage was to establish what is called Triads. Basically, it is 2 of our churches connecting with one of the existing New England church plants. There are 7 Triads. Our churches are not only connecting with, and encouraging, them, but also sending teams to work alongside them. In the process, we are building great relationships and learning more and more about the New England culture. Yes, I am very pleased with how the Triads are working. We also had a vision trip there earlier this year. It was a fun time of connecting some of our church leaders with the folks there. The larger piece of our partnership is a commitment to be intricately involved in establishing 3 new churches there over the next 9 years. While I was praying for God to raise up that all-important, first church planter, I wasn’t really wanting it to be my pastor. But, it is! John David Mangrum, along with his wife, Natalie, and boys Noah and Owen, are leaving Origins church and moving to Boston in January. They will focus on the Charlestown neighborhood for a new church. This is personally bittersweet, but, I can’t wait to see what God does through them, and us.

- 24 -

REVITALIZE

Not only must we start new churches, we must assist our existing churches. Southern Baptist churches are autonomous. That means, among other things, GBA has no authority over our churches. Therefore, churches must recognize the need for assistance and request it. We can provide valuable assistance for churches who are serious about being filled with new life among the harvest that God has in front of you. There is a new demographic software called Mission Insite that can be a beneficial tool for our churches.

I must mention Woman's Missionary Union. WMU continues to provide valuable training, encouragement and ministry opportunities for our churches. I don’t know what we would do without the faithful WMU in the Association and churches. Marcie Malone, from Mauldin First church, has faithfully served as the Director for a number of years. Thank you! And welcome to Beth Allen, from Simpsonville First, as the new director.

Missions Strategy relates to New Work, Hispanic Outreach, Mission Partnerships, Community Ministries, Summer Ministries, Demographics, WMU, Men’s Ministries, Baptist Collegiate Ministries, Multihousing Ministry and a few other things. I am so thankful for Wanda Bridwell who tries to keep us straight as Missions Strategy Assistant.

Hispanic Ministries

The past year saw the Hispanic work of the GBA move forward in several areas. The average weekly attendance was up with to three hundred seventy-two, with twenty-seven baptisms, and eight more to be baptized this month. Three of our pastors were involved in mission work in other areas as well. They were doing evangelism and bible schools in New York, Mexico, and Ecuador, where they saw many come to know Christ as Savior. Praise the Lord! The Guatemalan congregation purchased a building, the former John Calvin Presbyterian Church on West Parker Road. They are the largest of our Hispanic congregations. We are looking at several areas where we pray a new work can begin this coming year.

Please pray for our Hispanic pastors and their families. Listed below are our Hispanic pastors and their place of service: 1. Jerry Zapata (Burly, wife) – Primera Iglesia de Greenville 2. Felipe Hernández (Eulalia, wife) – Cristo La Puerta Abierta 3. Ernesto Chaparro (Magdelena, wife) – Familia de Fe 4. Greg Somers (Magda, wife) – La Roca 5. Rafael Jáuregui (Raquel, wife) – Cristo Única Esperanza 6. Antonio Mejía (Rosio, wife) – Rio de Gloria 7. Carlos Ruiz (Flor, wife) – Fuente de Vida 8. Carlos Galarza (Rita, wife) – Misión Hispana Laurel and Misión Hispana Hampton Heights 9. Reimer Falck (Debora, wife) – Misión Hispana Mauldin

Severe flooding impacted residents of the downtown Greenville and Berea areas on July 29, 2004. After SC Baptist Flood Relief units responded to assist the homeowners affected, a generous portion of an estate gift to a Baptist church in the Berea area was designated for GBA Disaster Relief. That gift financed the establishment and equipment purchases for the GBA Flood Relief/Mud-Out Unit which was ready in time to respond to victims of hurricane Katrina in the Mississippi Gulf Coast the next year, 2005. The GBA Disaster Relief Unit has responded every year since then throughout the eastern United States to aid victims of flooding due to hurricanes, flash floods and the like with the help of trained SC Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers from across the state.

Baptist Collegiate Ministries

Furman University It is with great pleasure that I report that the Furman University BCM is alive and well on campus. Academic year 2015-2016 was a time of transition as I (Andy Cooper) took over the reins from Ryan Brooks. Our meetings are on Monday nights at 7:30 and we averaged just below 15 students a meeting. We enjoyed plenty of opportunities for fellowship, Bible Study, and service and developed a strong community of students dedicated to following Jesus in a Baptist way. Our goals for academic year 2016-2017 are to increase our direct missions experiences as well as increase our average attendance to 20 students.

Please continue to pray for our small, but mighty band of Baptist students at Furman.

Respectfully submitted, Rev. N. Andrew Cooper BA, Religion, Furman ‘94

This year we have been able to reach a new group of students for the Gospel. Students were able develop true biblical community and strengthen their faith through discussion, teaching, and fellowship. During our weekly Bible study, we were able to walk through what it means to have an authentic faith and develop true biblical community. Jade and Eli were the two students that stood out in how much they have grown in their faith this year. Eli came to BCM with some background knowledge of the Gospel but no real relationship with Christ. As he attended week in and week out, we saw his heart soften toward the gospel and his engagement increased. Jade came to BCM with a strong faith in Christ but some challenges in her understanding of Christian theology. As we walked through scripture we were able to have some great conversations and encourage her as she grew closer in her walk with Christ. Join us in prayer that God will continue to encourage every student that attended BCM this past year and continue to draw each of us closer to Him.

In Christ, Brian Bowman GTC BCM

WOMAN’S MISSIONARY UNION Auxiliary of Greenville Baptist Association Director’s Report

Our theme of “ALL FOR YOU – Surrender, Sacrifice – Serve” was emphasized throughout the year in our meetings, events, and correspondence. The focus was on our willingness to give over more and more to our Lord, so that we all can be a part of more and more service for the Kingdom.

As the service year began in September, 47 gathered at Simpsonville First Church, surrounded by displays prepared by consultants and other team members. The displays included basic instructional items plus reminders of service areas in which WMU groups of all ages may lead their churches’ involvement. Laurie Register, SC WMU Director and Treasurer, encouraged us to be aware of the changing world, and to always be looking at how we can be an impact with servant hearts. Director of Missions, Rev. Al Phillips, expressed appreciation for WMU involvement in missions in our churches and the Greenville area communities. He charged the gathering to continue in this endeavor. Our baby shower collections were presented to area crisis centers for their ministries.

In October, our team was represented at the Greenville Baptist Association Annual Meeting at Eastlan Church. There we distributed materials on Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) and the upcoming collection of Christmas Prisoner Packets.

In early November, the Baptist Women’s World Day of Prayer sessions and Season of Prayer for International Missions gave views of the wide world and the hurting, lost people we are charged to reach out to for Christ. Women on Missions groups of 7 churches lead 147 women in prayer sessions focusing on women and children of the world. WMU representatives in area churches emphasized to their churches the need for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, which supports Southern Baptist work worldwide.

Checking Christmas Prisoner Packets delivered to the Association office in early December was another opportunity for our team to support the work of Greenville Baptist Association and SC Baptist Convention in showing Christian love to prisoners in SC Correctional facilities. Our team encouraged WMU members to lead their churches to participate. We assisted in checking 1,814 packets delivered by 35 churches, before delivery to Columbia.

Our “celebrate WMU” month of February included a delicious dinner evening at City View Church on February 11. The testimonies, stories, and songs of Esther Burroughs, noted speaker and writer, and Kay Crowe Bayne, well-known singer, warmed hearts of 117 diners. There was also an abundant gathering of staple food items to be presented to area crisis centers.

We again contacted area church WMU persons to encourage their support for the March 6-13 Season of Prayer for North American Missions and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. The world has come to America with many cultures and religions. This offering supports Southern Baptist church planting and associated work across North America and helps bring hope and light to strangers and home folk needing Christ.

To gain information and guiding in new emphases and materials, and to be refreshed by stories of our missionaries, 6 team members attended the Annual SC WMU Encounter and Meeting on March 11-12 at Ashley River Church in Charleston. Participation in several mission action projects supported by local Charleston churches gave us the pleasure of serving, also. - 29 -

April 13 found us at Welcome Church in our own Annual Spring Meeting, with a finger food supper. Attending were almost 100 members and 11 ministry display presenters (a house full). Pam Parker, retired International Mission Board missionary and presenter of the Baptist Global Response Bucket Project – Hospice Kits, spoke on the extreme needs in hospice units in other countries for basic care items, hygiene items, and cleaning products. Linda Allen, retired International Mission Board missionary, gave a heartfelt talk on their years of service and early retirement, and the leaving behind much work that needs to be continued. Officers for the upcoming year were elected.

A new project for the team was volunteering to provide and deliver daily lunches to a work crew during Mission Greenville in June. This gave us a part in the Association providing roofs and needed repairs to homes of some underserved citizens.

Our last event of the year was the Children’s Ministry Day gathering on August 27 at Monaghan Church. We had a good time arranging flower pots to be delivered to shut-ins and nursing homes. The 36 attenders heard about the need for the plan of salvation to be presented to children ministered to in our church activities. Kim McKinney, GA and Children in Action consultant, shared with the boys and girls, along with their leaders, how they can be a part of this. We ended the session with a hot dog meal.

The Woman’s Missionary Union, Auxiliary of Greenville Baptist Association, as usual has had a busy year serving alongside churches and the Greenville Association staff. We thank you for this opportunity to serve you and we pledge our efforts to continue in presenting missions education, and development to the churches.

Marcie Malone, Past Director Woman’s Missionary Union Auxiliary to Greenville Baptist Association

Straight Street TaeKwonDo

In partnership with the Greenville Baptist Association, Straight Street Ministries has been providing TaeKwonDo classes for Pastors, Missionaries, Chaplains and their families for the past three years. Current students of Straight Street TaeKwonDo include a facility Director for Miracle Hill Ministries (former SC Department of Corrections Chaplain), a Hospice Chaplain (former Celebrate Recovery Pastor), an International Mission Board family of missionaries, and a bi- vocational Pastor with his two teenage sons.

Many wonder, just what is the GBA TaeKwonDo Ministry? TaeKwonDo is a Korean style of self-defense and martial arts that has been provided in the Greenville Baptist Association office and a part of the Greenville area Baptist life for over 16 years. (It is also a summer Olympics’ sport.)

The classes are taught by a Christian, Forth Degree Black Belt Master Instructor with over 40 years of TaeKwonDo teaching experience registered with the World Taekwondo Headquarters, Kukkiwon, in Seoul, Korea. The “Ministry” part of this is attributed to the Christian atmosphere of the classes and that the lessons are provided twice per week at the GBA office for ministers, pastors, missionaries and their families at no charge (minimal operational fees). Classes are also open to law enforcement families, members of GBA churches, church staff, etc. at minimal rates.

If you have an interest in improving your physical, mental and spiritual development along with self-defense and self- discipline by learning the ancient martial art of TaeKwonDo, please contact Rev. Jim Whitworth at [email protected], 864.232.0031, or through the Greenville Baptist Association office. New classes, just for beginners, start periodically so call or email for information.

Church Relations Committee Report

The Church Relations Committee made its final report last January at our Executive Committee meeting regarding the Augusta Heights Church. We had given them until that meeting to respond to our request that they repent and return to the biblical understanding of marriage as between a man and a woman. Since they did not respond, we considered our action of last October final and the church was removed from membership in the GBA. Our hearts are saddened but we are certain this was the biblical response for us.

During 2016, the Westside Church dissolved, being absorbed into a non-denominational church in Simpsonville so this church was removed from our roles. We are working with the East Park and Sanctuary Churches towards a merger that has been approved by both churches. The new church will maintain the name of Sanctuary and the church will continue to meet at 302 Parkins Mill Road.

Thank you for the honor of serving. Dr. Mike Runion Chairman, Church Relations Committee Pastor, City View First Church

Personnel Committee

The Personnel Committee is pleased to report that the vacant part-time position of Administrative Assistant has been filled. Resumes were accepted and interviews were conducted. The Personnel Committee selected and unanimously approved Mrs. Anna Richardson as their nomination, which was then approved by the Association. Mrs. Richardson has since fulfilled her duties with professionalism and grace. The Personnel Committee also strongly desires to commend the Associational staff for their professionalism as well as they fulfill their callings to ministry. It is very evident that a spirit of purpose and unity to accomplish the goal that “All May Know” has permeated the atmosphere of the offices.
