Fisher 2008-09 DeWItt Ezell, Jr. 1997-98 Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends, Please join me in celebration of another exceptional year for PENCIL Foundation. Although PENCIL has operated for 27 years, our accomplishments continue to show our tremendous enthusiasm for helping Metro Nashville public school students. In fact, every effort of PENCIL is laser-focused on helping young people reach their full potential, graduate from high school and make a smooth transition into college or the workforce. Our success in this endeavor is grounded by the ongoing expansion of PENCIL Partners. In the midst of a tough economy, we recruited 82 new PENCIL Partners for a record total of 545 businesses or community organizations. For the second year, each and every public school in Nashville has at least one PENCIL Partner. This extraordinary, citywide support for students is among the most comprehensive efforts anywhere in the United States. There are many more successes to celebrate, including: • An eye-opening expansion of the LP PENCIL Box. Community and in-kind donations went up to $802,716, a remarkable increase of 91%. Teacher shopping visits increased by 22% to 2,337, and volunteer hours at the Box jumped by 80% to 5,660. • A new opportunity to leverage and expand our Jobs for Tennessee Graduates program. Using the 27 years of expertise in JTG, we opened an afterschool program for middle schools and participated in the U.S. stimulus program to provide summer employment for disadvantaged youth. • A significant role in launching new partnership structures and activities for the Career Academies in our high schools. With help from PENCIL, schools can now access a Career Speakers Bureau and also get advice from Partnership Councils in a variety of industry categories. • Expansion of the Math Partners program. Last year, the program included 3rd and 4th graders in 16 elementary schools, as well as 485 middle school students. PENCIL also has bragging rights to a number of internal achievements. In a challenging time for non-profits, A LITTLE NIGHT of MUSIC was more successful than ever. And, PENCIL is in the forefront of using social networking sites for recruiting volunteers and communicating with young adults. This report contains many more examples of PENCIL’s persistent pursuit of excellence as we serve the 75,000 students and 5,000 teachers in Nashville’s public schools. And, rest assured we aren’t resting on our laurels. Even as this report goes to print, PENCIL is working on new ways to improve our programs and add new initiatives. All of this is possible because of the wonderful partners, donors and volunteers who support PENCIL. Thank you. Your involvement is making a change in Nashville that will benefit our entire city.
