Dear Friends,

Please join me in celebration of another exceptional year for PENCIL Foundation. Although PENCIL has operated for 27 years, our accomplishments continue to show our tremendous enthusiasm for helping Metro Nashville public school students. In fact, every effort of PENCIL is laser-focused on helping young people reach their full potential, graduate from high school and make a smooth transition into college or the workforce. Our success in this endeavor is grounded by the ongoing expansion of PENCIL Partners. In the midst of a tough economy, we recruited 82 new PENCIL Partners for a record total of 545 businesses or community organizations. For the second year, each and every public school in Nashville has at least one PENCIL Partner. This extraordinary, citywide support for students is among the most comprehensive efforts anywhere in the United States. There are many more successes to celebrate, including: • An eye-opening expansion of the LP PENCIL Box. Community and in-kind donations went up to $802,716, a remarkable increase of 91%. Teacher shopping visits increased by 22% to 2,337, and volunteer hours at the Box jumped by 80% to 5,660. • A new opportunity to leverage and expand our Jobs for Tennessee Graduates program. Using the 27 years of expertise in JTG, we opened an afterschool program for middle schools and participated in the U.S. stimulus program to provide summer employment for disadvantaged youth. • A significant role in launching new partnership structures and activities for the Career Academies in our high schools. With help from PENCIL, schools can now access a Career Speakers Bureau and also get advice from Partnership Councils in a variety of industry categories. • Expansion of the Math Partners program. Last year, the program included 3rd and 4th graders in 16 elementary schools, as well as 485 middle school students. PENCIL also has bragging rights to a number of internal achievements. In a challenging time for non-profits, A LITTLE NIGHT of MUSIC was more successful than ever. And, PENCIL is in the forefront of using social networking sites for recruiting volunteers and communicating with young adults. This report contains many more examples of PENCIL’s persistent pursuit of excellence as we serve the 75,000 students and 5,000 teachers in Nashville’s public schools. And, rest assured we aren’t resting on our laurels. Even as this report goes to print, PENCIL is working on new ways to improve our programs and add new initiatives. All of this is possible because of the wonderful partners, donors and volunteers who support PENCIL. Thank you. Your involvement is making a change in Nashville that will benefit our entire city.

Sincerely, Robert C. Fisher Chairman, 2008-2009

02 PENCIL Partners Beginning with 37 partnerships in 1982, the PENCIL Partners program has grown to include 547 businesses and organizations paired with one or more Metro schools. Because of the philanthropic nature of the Nashville community, students are being exposed to experiences and opportunities that may not otherwise be available to them. Students across the city are getting exposure to arts and music, are being tutored and mentored, and are visiting workplaces and getting real world experiences through these business connections. Each partnership is different, unique and reflects the needs of the school.

Additional 2008-2009 Accomplishments:

• Recruited 85 new PENCIL Partners for a total of 547 partnerships. • Recorded 96,246 volunteer hours from 8622 volunteers volunteers working in our schools. • Hosted BRAVO! at Belmont University. Nearly 500 guests gathered to celebrate partnerships and volunteers and Mayor Karl Dean presented the 2009 Outstanding Partnership and System-wide Partnership awards. • Published Highlights book featuring partnership stories and pictures. • Hosted a breakfast for new principals to build relationships and educate them about partnerships in their new schools.

03 Reading Partners As in previous years, PENCIL Foundation’s Reading Partners Program has continued to allow MNPS students to obtain crucial literacy skills while simultaneously fostering a love for literature. For this program, trained volunteers read aloud to students or meet with individual students once per week for 30 minute sessions, working with them to increase areas such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and motivation to read. This year, an outstanding 84% of students in a sample group who received one-on-one reading assistance met or surpassed the performance target of improving at least two reading levels, with the average student improving 5.7 levels.

In addition to statistical improvements, students served by the Reading Partners Program have also displayed considerable gains in reading confidence and self-esteem. For example, with the help of her reading tutor, “Mr. Jack,” one struggling Fall-Hamilton Elementary School student was able to demonstrate her literary abilities by reading a Dr. Seuss book to her entire class. More than just reading tutors, volunteers such as “Mr. Jack” serve as ongoing mentors to students, ultimately helping them grow emotionally and academically.

2008-2009 Accomplishments: • Served 1,616 students in 34 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and the International Newcomer’s Academy, with 475 students receiving one-on-one reading assistance • 92.5% of all students served attended Title 1 schools • Approximately 11.5% of students who received one-on-one assistance were English Language Learners • Utilized volunteers from 43 organizations, including among others, PENCIL Partners companies and organizations: Alignment Nashville, Community Foundation, Nashville Chamber of Commerce, State of TN Legislature, TN State Government, YMCA, PENCIL Foundation, and MNPS • Doubled the number of federal work-study students serving as reading tutors from 5 to 11, serving 138 students at 9 schools, thereby increasing the number of students served through work-study commitments by 66% over last year • Collaborated with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee to provide reading training for their volunteers who mentor students on-site at selected MNPS elementary and middle schools • Provided consultation and training to replicate the Reading Partners model for Grundy County, TN, with plans to expand the program there in fall 2009

“I love to read myself, so PENCIL’s Reading Partners Program has been an ideal way to share that love with someone else. Throughout my time at Charlotte Park Elementary, my reading buddy and I have grown to be very close, and I have had the privilege of watching her reading skills and her confidence in the classroom increase dramatically.” – Jessica Ziegler, Volunteer

04 Math Partners The Math Partners Program of PENCIL Foundation links a dedicated group of volunteers to the children in Metro Public Schools. Math Partners understand the value of giving an extra boost to students who are struggling with math. This supplemental program, now in its 9th year, helps students strengthen basic math skills and concepts with an especially strong emphasis on solving word problems. The activities are engaging and hands-on; the small group setting encourages students to work collaboratively and talk about math. Since the program began in 2000, 2,816 students have expanded their math abilities

2008-2009 Accomplishments:

• A total of 104 community volunteers assisted 485 students struggling with math, including 194 elementary school children and 291 middle school students • Expanded the program to include 3rd and 4th graders in 16 elementary schools • Created additional curriculum and support for English Language Learning students who are behind grade-level in math • ThinkLink tests indicate that students in the program are making significant academic progress in math. These tests are used by the school system as a predictor of student performance on the annual state mandated TCAP tests. The ThinkLink goal is that students attain a score of 100 or more as an indication of “one academic year of growth.” A sampling of scores taken of 3rd‐8th graders from schools throughout the county‐wide school system shows that students made an average yearly gain of 99.8. • 97% of the Math Partner volunteers surveyed reported that the program improves students’ abilities to do math; 100% of the teachers/school coordinators reported improvement.

05 LP PENCIL Box With an allotment of only $200 from Metro Schools for instructional materials and supplies and nearly 73 percent of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch, many teachers dip into their own pockets to purchase essential school supplies. Since opening LP PENCIL Box in 2005, teachers and their students have been getting some assistance. Growing each year in donations, the program now allows for every teacher to shop twice a year for free, and each time they leave with an estimated $260 worth of items in their cart. Since 2005, over $1.3 million worth of supplies have reached classrooms across the city.

2008-2009 Accomplishments:

• Welcomed 2,337 teachers who shopped free for school supplies • Recorded 5,982 volunteer hours, nearly double last year’s amount • Served 35,000 students • Students from the Life Skills classes at Hillsboro and McGavock High Schools volunteered weekly to sort school supplies, stock shelves, clean the store and conduct inventory • Hosted several volunteer groups from area colleges and businesses • Hosted first Annual Book Fair in Spring

06 Financial Literacy Educating high school students about consumer money management and credit is a priority of PENCIL’s Financial Literacy program. PENCIL Foundation volunteers lead high school students through a series of FDIC Money Smart modules that prevent them from becoming involved in transactions that are financially destructive —now and, most importantly, in the future as they make life- changing credit decisions. The curriculum helps young adults build financial knowledge, financial confidence, and use banking services effectively.

2008-2009 Accomplishments: • Increased expert volunteer pool by 10 • Volunteer instructors generated 200 volunteer hours • Served 275 program participants • Collaborated with Regions Bank, Prime Lending, Century 21 Premier, Ace Inspections, Stewart Title Company, MDHA and several individuals who volunteered their resources and time.

Homebuyer Education One of the fundamental beliefs of PENCIL is that the children of educated parents have a far better chance in life because they will be guided by their parents to make the right choices. The increasing complexity of the financial system and the lack of formal financial literacy education further burdens families who are trying to make ends meet, particularly low-income families. For most people, buying a home is the single largest purchase made in a lifetime. This building of funds helps create the foundation for sustainable wealth and eventual homeownership.

2008-2009 Accomplishments: • Enrolled and educated more than 75 new young adults about the home buying process. Thirty-five are now first-time homeowners. • Organized more than 94 volunteer-led classroom modules for high school seniors and prospective first-time homebuyers.

Our students look forward to the weekly financial literacy classes and are very engaged during the sessions. I can see that they are relating the lessons to their own life experiences and their plans for the future. I strongly believe that these sessions will equip them to better manage their money for the rest of their lives. – Lori Sharpe, Job Specialist at Hunters Lane High School

07 Saint Thomas Science Scholars Healthcare professions continue to top the lists ranking the best opportunities for the future and students with an interest in the medical field can get an inside look at specific areas by participating in Saint Thomas Science Scholars. This program provides an opportunity for rising sophomores to explore the many exciting and challenging options in the healthcare professions. Participating in a series of Saturday morning sessions at Saint Thomas Hospital, students are introduced to the areas of anatomy and physiology, engage in hands-on activities, and find out more about the various career paths for healthcare professionals. 2008-2009 Accomplishments: • Awarded placements to 40 high school students with an interest in science and the healthcare professions in the Science Scholars Program • Provided over 463 students with placements in this program since 1994; many are now practicing healthcare professionals • Arranged summer job shadowing opportunities for Science Scholars at Matthew Walker Clinic

Maplewood Family Resource Center Maplewood Family Resource Center (FRC) builds a support system for every student to thrive by linking community organizations, school personnel, and families together to help remove barriers that may hinder academic success and productive adulthood. Located at Maplewood High School, services such as counseling, job readiness, college preparation, alcohol & drug abuse counseling and mentoring are available to students and their families. 2008-2009 Accomplishments • Provided services to 873 students; surveys completed by partners, advisory council, and parents stated that the programs and services of the FRC were effective in meeting the needs of students and families. • Remodeled the Family Resource Center to provide a welcoming environment and developed a parent room to provide meeting space, support services, educational materials, and online access for conducting job searches.

08 Support for High School Small Learning Communities PENCIL supported Metro Schools’ plans for district-wide high school redesign by piloting new ways to engage businesses in the high school Small Learning Communities (SLCs). SLCs structure large zoned schools into smaller, more personalized learning environments, creating freshman academies for 9th graders and career and thematic academies for students in grades 10-12.

PENCIL collaborated with Metro Schools and the Nashville Chamber to organize six Career Academy Partnership Councils to support ongoing dialogue between industry leaders and educators. These councils include:

• Arts, Media & Communications • Business, Marketing & Information Technology • Health • Engineering, Manufacturing & Industrial Technology • Hospitality & Tourism • Human & Public Services

With support from Alignment Nashville, PENCIL also launched a Career Speakers Bureau in January that helps connect business speakers on a variety of topics with opportunities to speak to a class of high school students. During the year, the Bureau logged 609 offers to speak, on topics ranging from 21st century workplace skills to industry trends to career overviews.

PENCIL also piloted a high school mentoring program to serve at-risk high school freshmen during the 2008—2009 school year. Students selected for this program were identified by their freshman academy teachers and were paired with a caring adult for an hour per week. Although the program required a twelve-week minimum commitment, many relationships continued beyond the twelve-week mark. During mentoring sessions, pairs discussed a variety of pertinent issues, ultimately helping students to decrease problem behaviors, improve attendance, and bolster academic performance.

2008—2009 Accomplishments • Established six High School Career Academy Partnership Councils • Launched a Career Speakers Bureau, recruited more than 300 speakers for 609 volunteer opportunities, and matched 72 speakers to a classroom experience • Recruited 40 community volunteers to serve as mentors to at-risk high school freshman • Served 40 students in 2 schools—Maplewood and Pearl-Cohn High Schools • Logged a total of 480 volunteer mentor hours

09 Jobs for Tennessee Graduates Increasing the graduation rate in Metro Schools is a priority. Currently only 72.6% of Nashville students graduate. Serving 11 high schools, two of which are in Giles County, and expanding into two Metro middle schools, JTG is capturing students with the message that graduating from high school provides more opportunities later in life. Job specialists work with students to provide the skills they’ll need for writing a catchy resume, conducting a successful interview and transitioning into any post-secondary education after graduation. They also provide twelve months of intensive follow-up assistance for each participant. 2008-2009 Accomplishments:

• Served 375 high school seniors and 358 new high school graduates and 80 students in grades 9-11 by mentoring and teaching career and life skills • Achieved a 96% graduation rate for seniors, an 85% positive outcome rate after 12 months and a 55% further education rate • Three JTG, Middle TN schools have attained the national JAG standard of “Five of Five” based on follow up for the class of 2008 • Kimberly Washington, Career Specialist at Stratford High School, was recognized at the JAG national convention in Atlanta as one of three high performing specialists in Tennessee Career Exploration Program A partnership between the Mayor’s Office, PENCIL, Nashville Career Advancement Center and Metro Schools, the Career Exploration Program will provide students at Cameron and Wright Middle Schools a chance to learn more about careers in an after-school setting. The program is a component of Jobs for Tennessee Graduates, based on curriculum from the parent organization Jobs for America’s Graduates. It is funded through the mayor’s Education First Fund.

In addition to the afterschool component of the program, the participating students were offered a stipend to attend a summer camp in June, where students were given the opportunity to visit area businesses and learn from experts in different career fields. 2008-2009 Accomplishments • Served 41 middle school 7th graders by mentoring and teaching career and life skills • Enrolled 25 middle school 7th graders in Career Exploration Summer Camp at where students developed skills essential for 21st Century workforce and explored career options specifically related to high school career academies

“This program is the first step towards making consistent, high-quality afterschool programs available to all of our students, especially those at the middle school level because that is a critical time for determining whether or not a student will stay in school and graduate.” – Mayor Karl Dean

10 GOLD Stars An acronym for “Greater Opportunities for Learning Daily,” Gold Stars is a before-and-after school program that provides both a safe haven and academic and enrichment opportunities for students at select elementary and middle schools. As participants in the program, students are exposed to fun and educational activities provided by organizations such as the Nashville Symphony and Adventure Science Center. Each student also receives a daily healthy snack, and those students in need of academic assistance can be paired with tutors.

The coordinated efforts among Nashville’s incredible business community provide an exciting opportunity for students to have extended school hours. This year’s participating organizations include:

• Adventure Science Center • Belmont University Students • Kilowatt Ours • Nashville Ballet • Nashville Public Library • Nashville Symphony • Second Harvest Food Bank • Tennessee Nutrition & Consumer Education Program

2008-2009 Accomplishments • Provided after-school enrichment opportunities for more than 220 students at Cole, Glenview, and Napier Enhanced Option Elementary Schools, as well as Donelson and Wright Middle Schools • Offered reading and tutoring assistance to 162 students
