This double national cultivation gavecause for an ongoing feud between Danish and Norwegian historians concerninghis true fatherland.Atthe same time, the uncertaintysurrounding his exact nationality offered awealth of material for narratives of Dano-Norwegian, and even pan- Scandinavian rapprochement. This article explores Tordenskjold’strack record as afigure of nationalcultivation by treating him as adynamic and transnationalmemory site (lieu de mémoire).Itwill be demonstrated that the contestation surrounding the ownership of his memory formed an importantmotivation for the rich artistic cultivation of this national hero, while the symbolic meaning attributedtohim wassubjected to the ideological needs of the individuals and groupsappropriatinghim. As such, Tordenskjold came to be alternately ingrained in Danish, Norwegian, Dano-Norwegian,and Scandinavian frameworks ac- cording to the relevant political and social circumstances. Keywords Peter Wessel Tordenskjold, Cultural memory, Cultivation of culture, National heroes, Lieu de mémoire Introduction Peter Wessel Tordenskjold (1690–1720) belongs to the most beloved and most cultivated national heroes in nineteenth-century Denmark and Norway. The list of songs, poems, stories, plays, novels, and biographies featuring the vice admiral in the leading role is aparticularly long one and includes works by such prominent authors as Adam Oehlenschläger, B. S. Ingemann, and Henrik Hertz.

Danish-Norwegian Sailors During the Great Northern War, 1700-1721: a portrait based on the available archaeological and historical sources. Master’s thesis submitted to the Maritime Archaeology Programme University of Southern Denmark Edgar Wróblewski 2013 Acknowledgements During the period in which this thesis was written I came across many people who shared their knowledge, advice and support with me. First, I would like to thank Jakob Seerup, the museum inspector of the Royal Danish Naval Museum (Orlogsmuseet), whose forthcoming article ‘ Absence of Shipwrecks’ inspired me to direct my research towards common sailors and as the result to write this thesis. I would also like to thank few people without whom dealing with the archaeological material in this thesis would remain impossible. For the information about the shipwreck and the finds from the frigate Lossen, I would like to thank Jørgen Johannessen from the Norwegian Maritime Museum (Norsk Maritimt Museum). For allowing me the access to the finds from the shipwreck of Dannebroge, I shall like to thank the director of the Køge Museum, Flemming Rieck, and the head of the conservation department Simon Botfeldt. For the information about the shipwrecks and the finds from Marstrand I would like to send many thanks to Thomas Bergstrand and Delia Ní Chíobháin from the Bohusläns Museum. For information and photos of the finds from the Swedish Naval Museum (Marinmuseum), I would like to thank Johan Löfgren. I am also grateful to Mrs Katrin Auer, for her help with deciphering early 18th-century handwriting. I would also like to thank Charlotte Haaber Pettersen for her dedication and time spent on helping me with sources in all Scandinavian languages.

Privateers of Skagerrak LICENSED TO PLUNDER Introduction Privateers? In Sweden? Many react with surprise when they hear what happened out in the waters of Skagerrak in the not- so-distant past. But these are not just pirate stories – they are actual events. • Finland/Sweden Historical Wars
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY Finland/Sweden Historical Wars 1 INTRODUCTION This book describes the historical times of the wars and battles when Finland was still a part of Sweden. It precedes the history of when Finland became independent, which is in the book “Finland’s Independence, the Birth” . I have not included all battles but enough to give a picture of how we have almost constantly been at war. It is also about our relatives at those times. In most cases I mention a person only once, although that person has been part of many other battles. Many of the persons are the Swedish and Finnish rulers and officers when Sweden was a major European power. The following words from the “Tales of Ensign Stål” by Runeberg illustrate the accomplishments of these heroes in the poem set to music in the “March of the Björneborgers”. The poem mentions just four battlefields. In this book I have listed many more from the First Crusade almost 900 years ago to the brief fight in 1854 at Halkokari in my hometown Gamlakarleby in Finland. “Sons of fathers brave who bled On Poland’s sand on Narva’s moor, At Leipzig, Lützen, never stinting. Think not Finland’s might is dead, Still with hostile blood a battlefield is red.” You can listen to this message our distant relatives send us, their descendants and relatives at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypwjJedZPIg and see some the war scenes at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54YSkW4sJU4&feature=related Some of the persons described are our direct ancestors, most are distant cousins from common ancestors.
