  • Time As the Fifth Element in Margaret Laurence's Manawaka Cycle
UDK 821.111(71).09-31 Laurence M. TIME AS THE FIFTH ELEMENT IN MARGARET LAURENCE'S MANAWAKA CYCLE Brigita Pavsic Abstract Margaret Laurence's Manawaka cycle has several unifying features, one of them is the four elements theory. This pattern may not be deliberate, however, it is very well developed through all four novels: The Stone Angel represents earth, A Jest of God air, The Fire-Dwellers fire, and The Diviners represents water. Additionally, The Diviners reconciles all four elements. The main metaphor of water running both ways in this novel also offers a new interpretation of the occurrence of the water element in the other three n:ovels-asa metaphor for the progress of time and maturing: -- ---- INTRODUCTION 1\venty years after her death, on January 5, 1987, MargaretLaurence is still one of the greatest Canadian writers. She was born and laid to rest in the small town of Neepawa in Manitoba. The town itself served as a model for Manawaka, the fictional setting for her Manawaka cycle of four novels and a short story collection: The Stone Angel, A Jest of God, The Fire-Dwellers, The Diviners, and A Bird in the House. If we exempt the short story collection, the cycle is not unified solely by the main characters' hometown. In the Manawaka cycle "we encounter a pattern which may not be deliberate, but which nevertheless seems clean and definite" (Woodcock 55); the pattern being that of the four elements: water, air, earth, and fire. From The Stone Angel to The Diviners the cycle progresses from arid drought to water in various forms and, finally, the four elements, and through them the appurtenant humours of the protagonists - the melancholic, the phlegmatic, the choleric, and the sanguine, are reconciled in the last novel.

  • The Phenomenological Aesthetics of the French Action Film
Les Sensations fortes: The phenomenological aesthetics of the French action film DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Alexander Roesch Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Flinn, Advisor Patrick Bray Dana Renga Copyrighted by Matthew Alexander Roesch 2017 Abstract This dissertation treats les sensations fortes, or “thrills”, that can be accessed through the experience of viewing a French action film. Throughout the last few decades, French cinema has produced an increasing number of “genre” films, a trend that is remarked by the appearance of more generic variety and the increased labeling of these films – as generic variety – in France. Regardless of the critical or even public support for these projects, these films engage in a spectatorial experience that is unique to the action genre. But how do these films accomplish their experiential phenomenology? Starting with the appearance of Luc Besson in the 1980s, and following with the increased hybrid mixing of the genre with other popular genres, as well as the recurrence of sequels in the 2000s and 2010s, action films portray a growing emphasis on the importance of the film experience and its relation to everyday life. Rather than being direct copies of Hollywood or Hong Kong action cinema, French films are uniquely sensational based on their spectacular visuals, their narrative tendencies, and their presentation of the corporeal form. Relying on a phenomenological examination of the action film filtered through the philosophical texts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Mikel Dufrenne, and Jean- Luc Marion, in this dissertation I show that French action cinema is pre-eminently concerned with the thrill that comes from the experience, and less concerned with a ii political or ideological commentary on the state of French culture or cinema.

  • Philosophy in Contemporary Time: Relevance Vs. Public Perception
Mgbakoigba, Journal of African Studies. Vol.6 No.1. July 2016 PHILOSOPHY IN CONTEMPORARY TIME: RELEVANCE VS. PUBLIC PERCEPTION C.O. Abakare & V.C. Okeke Abstract What is the relevance of philosophy in this contemporary time? Philosophy is viewed by many people as an irrelevant discipline- one of no social and/or practical significance. It is sometimes seen also as an abstract and drab enterprise fit only for the intellectuals. Overtime also, philosophy has come to be perceived as having enjoyed its relevance in the past and no longer has any relevance in this era of “science and technology”. However, certain questions arise: Given this perception, is philosophy actually of any relevance to the contemporary society? In practical terms, what are the roles of philosophy to society? Using the traditional philosophical method of analysis and exposition, this paper finds that philosophy plays and continues to play a vital role in contemporary society. The paper submits that philosophy is essential for an all- encompassing human development. As philosophy trains the human mind to reason correctly and rationally, the paper recommends a little bit of philosophy for all in the different levels of the educational sector. This proper training of the human mind with the tool of philosophy translates to human cum societal enhancement. Keywords: Philosophy, Contemporary, Reason, Public Perception, Societal Development Introduction Philosophy, as an area of study is nowadays attracting a lot of lack of patronage for the singular reason that it does not put “food on the table nor does it build bridges”. This is a manner of describing the common place opinion that philosophy is an abstract “speculative reasoning or exercise about cosmos or reality and thus has no direct relevance or contribution to make in practical issues of human existence”1.

religions Article Love Thy Extra-Terrestrial Neighbour: Charity and Compassion in Luc Besson’s Space Operas The Fifth Element (1997) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) Sylvie Magerstädt School of Humanities, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, Herts AL10 9EU, UK; [email protected] Received: 13 August 2018; Accepted: 20 September 2018; Published: 27 September 2018 Abstract: The role of romantic love in cinema–and its redeeming aspects–has been extensively explored in film studies and beyond. However, non-romantic aspects of love, especially love for the neighbour, have not yet received as much attention. This is particularly true when looking at mainstream science fiction cinema. This is surprising as the interstellar outlook of many of these films and consequently the interaction with a whole range of new ‘neighbours’ raises an entirely new set of challenges. In this article, the author explores these issues with regard to Luc Besson’s science fiction spectacles The Fifth Element (1997) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017). Both films have divided fans and critics and it is indeed easy to dismiss them as mere spectacle with little depth or message, as many reviewers have done. Yet, as this article demonstrates, beneath their shiny, colourful surface, both films make a distinct contribution to the theme of neighbourly love. What is more, Besson’s films often seem to develop a close link between more common notions of romantic love and agapic forms of love and thus offer a perspective of exploring our relationship to the alien as our neighbour.

  • Philosophy Through Film: the Matrix (1999)
Philosophy through Film: The Matrix (1999) What is REAL and how do we KNOW? Philosophy is about asking questions, and understanding how people have tried to answer very broad questions. An Introduction to METAPHYSICS and EPISTEMOLOGY In The Matrix (Andy and Larry Wachowski, 1999) Keanu Reeves plays a computer programmer who leads a double life as a hacker called Neo. After receiving cryptic messages on his computer monitor, Neo begins to search for Morpheus (Laurence Fishburn), the leader of a resistance group, who he believes is responsible for the messages. Eventually, Neo finds Morpheus, and is then told that reality is actually very different from what he perceives it to be. Morpheus tells Neo that human existence is merely an illusion. In reality, humans are being ‘farmed’ as a source of energy by a race of sentient, malevolent machines. People actually live their entire lives in pods, with their brains being fed sensory stimuli which give them the illusion of leading ‘ordinary’ lives. Morpheus explains that, up until then, the ‘reality’ perceived by Neo is actually ‘a computer‐generated dream world…a neural interactive simulation’ called The Matrix. Watch the clips from The Matrix and think about the following three questions: What is REAL? What can we KNOW? If this film is meant to teach us something about life, what is its message? Read the quotations and answer the questions in the space provided. 1) What is ‘real’ for Neo? Is he right? “What is real? How do you define ‘real’? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain”.
